Sharah couldn’t put off her decision any longer. She knew what she wanted to do, so now she had to do it. Whatever came next, and apparently that was a much larger possibility than she had ever expected. She scheduled a time with McBride, and on the day she made her way to his office and rang the chime.

Lt. Cmdr. Fayth, SFCMO

“Come in,” McBride said.

Inside, Jonathan was looking out one of the windows and out into the large interior courtyard of the Complex. Mug in hand, he took a sip and turned to face his newcomer.

“Commander, come on it. I suspect by your calling a meeting, you have thought over the situation was last discussed?” he asked, gesturing for her to take a seat in the small sitting area that he had finally gotten around to bringing in. It was just a small sofa and two arm chairs set around a circular coffee table, but it provided him more options for meetings. The office wasn’t tiny, but he was still working on tweaking things to his liking.

Fayth moved over to one of the arm chairs and sat down. The office was becoming more personal a bit at a time. It was interesting to watch. To see hints of McBride’s character come through. “Yes, Sir, I have.”

He lifted his mug. “Can I get you anything? Or would that make this part harder?” McBride asked lightly. He couldn’t quite tell from her body language what sort of decision she might have come to, but either way it resulted in him losing his CMO. That wasn’t always a bad thing, especially if it meant they were moving on to bigger and better things, but in the time had head bene on Oed, Jonathan had enjoyed working with Fayth. It sucked that they wouldn’t be working directly together anymore.

“Jestral Tea, please.” Fayth shook her head, “I don’t think anything will make this easier.” There was really no point in putting it off. “I’ve decided to retire from Star Fleet. Well, semi-retire. I’m going to register with the Reserves. I’m not sure what I’ll do as a civilian yet, but being in the Reserves will allow me to help Star Fleet and Oed if needed.” It gave her a fall back too if the civilian thing didn’t work out.

McBride nodded. “You know I’l be glad to have you around should the occasion ever require it. I hope it doesn’t happen, for all our sakes, but I’d be most glad to have you at our side, Sharah,” he said warmly. Then he sighed and gave a rueful smile. “Well, I hate losing you either way, but you need to do what’s right for you. Based on your comment, I take it you’ll be staying on Oed then?”

“That’s the plan. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll stay around until my reserves rotation is up.” Sharah wanted to stay on Oed, and she was going to do whatever she could to make that happen. “I’m not sure what I’ll be doing on the civilian side. I know you made some suggestions, and I appreciate them, but I want to try and do this on my own.” Perhaps that sounded childish. In some ways, Sharah very much felt like a child in this situation. It was all very brand new and unknown. She was looking forward to it, which was a huge switch for her, and she wanted to see what she was capable of. “This way though, I still get to help. I’ll have my mandatory weekends every month, and short tours each year. I’m hoping still being around, will help the transition. Oed is so wary of changes and new people. I can’t,” Fayth sighed and shook her head with a small smile, “I can’t abandon them. They mean too much to me.”

He nodded. “Well, you have to do what’s right for you, and you know I’ll support that transition however I can. In the meantime, you still have a few weeks left and we can make whatever transition plans we’ll need. And there will be some paperwork to do once I notify Personnel. I’ll let you know once I have that.”

Sharah nodded, “Of course.” She sighed. “I want to stay here, and serve Star Fleet. This seemed the best way. I inquired with personnel and was told I would be transferred. So this seems the best way.”

McBride nodded.

She took her tea, “May I make a suggestion for my replacement?”

He nodded again. “Of course. I value your opinion, especially in this matter.”

“Lt. Mika. I know she is the head of counseling, and she’s very good at her job. I also know she’s been bounced around from place to place, so her record seems spotty. All those assignments though have given her a really varried perspective on how to work with patients. She’s also the most qualified emergency medical doctor we have on staff. The Star Fleet complex needs that, and Sacred Heart needs someone well versed in that to work with their emergency department. That understands the demands and decisions that have to be made in those situations,” Fayth gave her position on it.

He gave a small nod, letting the idea percolate through his brain.

“Lt Asimina is a wonderful doctor, she’s integrated into the team so well, and one day she will make a great department head, but she’s not ready to take on the lead here yet. Lt Mika has been the head of several medical and counseling departments. Nothing this large, but no one has until they get here.”

“True,” Jonathan said, leaning back in his chair. He nodded slowly again. “Okay, I’ll consider it,” he said. It wasn’t a placating statement either- he planned to give the suggestion serious consideration.

Fayth really felt it would be a good choice. Not because Tandra was her friend and mentor, but professionally she knew Tandra was capable of it and she had already run the Oed gauntlet when she arrived. The transition would be smoother.

“But anything I can do to help the transition I am willing to do, Captain.”

He gave her a sincere smile. “Thank you. Don’t be surprised if I take you up on your offer. We have a lot of moving pieces going on right now. I don’t want anything to fall through the cracks because we’re overwhelmed.”

“I want this to go smoothly. Oed and Star Fleet mean to much to me,” Fayth smiled slightly, “which is why I chose this option. So anything I can do now or after, just ask, Captain.”

“Anything else you want to go over while you’re here? Anything you need from me to help your transition?” McBride asked.

Sharah thought about it for a moment, then shook her head, “No Sir. I’m sure as we get closer to the actual transition there may be, but right now it’s just the daily normal. My actual last day won’t be for 2 months.” She shook her head, that really wasn’t a lot of time. “Are there any projects you want me to have completed before then?”
