Pangolin didn’t look back as the Starfleet security chief left, he just looked at the Flaxian “What sort of gloves do you wear?” he asked.
Commissioner Karlson
Commissioner Karlson
Alston just nodded as Cmdr. Cattaneo left. This was not a matter for Starfleet Security, not if they really wanted answers to what happened here.
For now his attention was on the Flaxian, what was his angle in all of this.
- Mace
Even Tokerl knew his rights and he could simply shut up and say nothing. But he had bargaining chips. “You know, I’m not afraid of prison. Been there before. But you have bigger problems than what I might or might not have done.” He leaned forward, resting his elbows, left hand stroking one of his tendrils. It was obvious which of them was missing as a stub still remained.
“You can send me off to the Breen or whoever the hell you want to as a threat. But I’m more worried about the people here. See, I’m a marked man. Guaranteed I’ll be dead in one day even in your lovely custody, and as far as I’m concerned it is what it is. But you want answers. I can give them to you. But I have nothing to lose, and your threats”-his eyes flicked briefly to Tenkiller-“do not move me.”
~Tokerl
“That is not what Alston wanted to hear. He was also very confident in his belief, which was not good. That meant there was a sleeper somewhere. He wished he could trust his own agency, but he hasn’t been here long enough to really know anyone to not have any doubts in there motives. This could be a problem.
- Mace
“Oh, the good General doesn’t make threats.” a voice familiar to Mace said from the doorway. Jason Reilly, the Deputy Director of the Colonial Intelligence Agency and Mace’s second chair, walked slowly towards the cell. “He will absolutely turn whatever is left of you over to the Breen. But my friend and I here-” and he gestured to Mace and himself, “- know that you aren’t scared of that. So… we just won’t do anything.” He walked up to the cell’s containment field and looked directly at the prisoner. He was silent a moment and then said “No… you aren’t one to break. But you are one to say anything to save your hide… truth or otherwise. So we can’t really trust anything you say, ya? So I suppose that means we should just… you know… let you go.” One of the CCDA officers looked at Reilly as if he had grown a second head. “After the obligatory press conference where we apologize for arresting the wrong person, make a big deal about it, too. Your face on every. Single. Vidscreen. On the planet.” Reilly just looked at him again for a moment. “And then let us, of course, thank you for being so cooperative in the investigation. Instrumental really in narrowing the scope of suspects and shedding light on the conspirators working against the colony.” Reilly had no idea if any of that was true, of course; but in situations like this there were almost always conspirators and they were almost always working against something or someone. So he played the odds
Jason leaned against the wall and then said “Or… we do have option B. You tell us everything, right now, and provide us with the means to verify the veracity of what you say… and you walk out of here with a new identity, some latinum for those places you might need some, and a ship to take you wherever you want to go. So pick. Now. You don’t get to mull this over.”
Reilly- Deputy Director, CIA
It was really quite simple math in his head. Cooperate and he lived, or say nothing and wind up dead or worse. He was rather attached to his head, all things told, so Tokerl slowly nodded his head. “Alright, you have yourself a deal,” he said.
“I was hired to locate and secure plans for a particular government project. My… employer said Jones was a potential source and that an associate of my employer was keeping an eye on him for particular reasons. Something about having some dirt on him that we could use as leverage to get him to find info about the project. Since he was knocking boots with the Lieutenant Governor, it was assumed he could find what they were looking for. Don’t ask me how, that was beyond my scope. I was just supposed to scare him a little after he ignored some comms, or if he proved a threat to my employers, eliminate that threat.” Tokerl spread his hands out. “He hit me first. I defended myself and things… got out of control. In such an instance I was told to follow a procedure which included an injection. I don’t know what was in it and I didn’t bother to ask. But an associate of my employer gave me a device that got me in and out of the apartment without a trace.”
“I was following my instructions, but apparently the contractors I was hired by got hell for Jones being dead. So I tried to get the hell off this rock, since it was their mess, not mine and here we are.”
~Tokerl, Flaxian Mercenary for Hire
Jason didn’t move or blink, he just stared with a bored look on his face. When Tokerl stopped talking, Reilly said “The device, where is it. What project were you looking for, the name. And the names of anyone you know involved with this… no matter how peripherally. Now, please.”
Reilly- Deputy Director, CIA
Tokerl clearly wasn’t happy about all this, but he was at least being pragmatic and kept talking. “Security took the device off me, so ask them. It was given to me by a man, Roland Cavanagh, who works for a local tech company. Whoever his boss is has some sort of agreement with the Orion Syndicate cell here. The Syndicate hired me, which is why I know I’m a dead man. They don’t tolerate failure, nor do they like snitches.”
“I know the tech folks were blackmailing Jones so they could get info about something called PAD, Project Anvil Dragon. Apparently top secret.” So top secret that none of the people in the room had even heard about it. “All I know is it’s an Executive thing and the tech group was very interested in it. How they heard about it I’m not sure but they seem to be able to listen in on things.” He shrugged. “When I reported the situation that went down with Jones, the tech folks got pissed off. Said we went too far. But I was only following instructions from the Syndicate.”
~Tokerl, Flaxian Mercenary for Hire
Alston was taking notes as he spoke, sending them to an analyst to follow up with as he spoke. But when he mentioned Project Anvil Dragon he paused. That would at least explain what PAD was, but what was this project, and why was it not in any of the briefings he had seen. And why was it worth killing to get the info on.
- Mace
Reilly gave Mace a questioning glance. It was obvious the name was new to him. He then looked at Tokerl and nodded. He looked at one of the CCDA officers and said “Give him a PaDD.” As the officer prepared the device, Reilly said “Names. Dates. Places. If you don’t know the names, physical descriptions. You know the drill and what we want. And to show you we are acting in good faith…” and he pulled his communicator from his pocket. [It’s me. I need a ship prepped and made ready for immediate departure. One on board. Standard relocation package and five bars gold pressed platinum. Have it ready in two hours.] There was a chirp of acknowledgement. He looked at Tokerl as the PaDD was given to him through the food tray slot. “Better make it good. And quick. If this doesn’t check out…” and he shook his head.
Reilly- Deputy Director, CIA
“Oh it will,” Tokerl said as he began to write down information. A lot of information. Then he passed the PADD back.
Essentially, Tokerl had been hired by a member of the Orion Syndicate by the name of Sitin, a mid-level associate. As was typical in Syndicate dealings, Tokerl had no knowledge of who Sitin was reporting too. But Sitin put him in contact with Roland Cavanagh, a high-level technician at Devray Technologies who gave him the device that not only unlocked the doors at Jones’s building but also interrupted the video feeds for brief seconds enough. It clearly hadn’t been enough to stop Tokerl from showing up on the feed entirely, but it did remove most of the video traces of him actually being at the apartment. If Dash hadn’t fought back and Tokerl lost one of his facial tendrils and left his own DNA at the scene, the mercenary might have gotten away with it.
As far as timelines went, Tokerl was hired a month ago, but he understood that something larger had been planned for a few months. Jones was only a recent (and convenient) addition to the plan, and as far Tokerly knew the backmail portion had only started a couple weeks ago.
Since the Major Crimes task force had an integrated team they pulled in as necessary, the Starfleet security team was working with others, like the police. So it was probably no surprise that a familiar face (to some) appeared in the form of Aliana Ripkiz, the technology forensics specialist from the Oed Police. “Well, what a week,” she said, rolling her eyes. She handed over a PADD with the breakdown on the device they confiscated off the Flaxian. It was manufactured by Deray Technologies. “Such a coinkydink, doncha think?” she said. “Devray is certainly getting around, given we just met last week about them and the issue at Dasca’s place. So it made me curious and I did a little research. It’s there, plus where to look if you want to go down that rabbit hole further, though I’m sure you’ll have access to more than I do,” she said with a rather self-satisfied smile.
The background search on Devray showed the CEO and owner was Thurston Kennick. From all accounts, Kennick looked like an upstanding citizen. He was a prominent business man with a background in computer science and had been living on Oed for 8 years. Devray Technologies was started 6 years ago and had moved solely from R&D and branched into production 3 years ago.
It was also noted that Kennick had also been on the short list of nominees for Lt. Governor of Oed, along with Captain Dasca and Vice Admiral T’Naris. Kennick was the only short-listed candidate with no ties at all to Starfleet and that had been one of the primary criticisms against his appointment, given the Lt. Gov was also in charge of the Starfleet forces on the colony. His nominator had been Federation Councillor Gregson Clarke, who was the representative on the Federation Council for Alpha Centauri. Though Ripkiz hadn’t outlined further details on either men, she did link some reference points and noted that they seems to have known each other for years.
OOC: let me know if I missed anything you wanted to know that I probably should have included.
~Aliana Ripkiz (Oed Police) and Tokerl
Reilly read the report and then looked at Mace and Tenkiller. “Two high end devices from the same company involved in direct or indirect attacks against the Lieutenant Governor. CEO of that company passed over for that very same spot. And backed up by a Federation Councillor. Now, I’m not one to yell fire in a crowded theatre… but I definitely smell smoke.”
Reilly- Deputy Director, CIA
Tenkiller cleared his throat and said “How about we take this back’ta my office, y’all?” He then motioned the group of investigators out of the holding area and back to his office.
Once inside, he took a seat at the conference table and had the report brought up on the tables view screen. “Ok. So before we go any further… what are y’all thinking?”
