Karina managed to leave her office on time. There was so much that the new university demanded and the school system in general did as well. Most nights she didn’t mind coming in late. She had no pets and no people waiting for her, so it didn’t matter. She entered the silent apartment, but didn’t bother with the lights. She knew where everything was. She moved through the dark and set her bag on her desk near the windows. Then she moved into the kitchen to start making a cup of lkava. That task took her a few minutes and while it steeped she went into her bedroom and changed into a lightweight satin robe.

She took her cup and sat in the plush armchair that faced the windows. It was days like this that she missed Jodar. She missed being able to come home to him and Rondara. Not that they had lived together or were technically a family, but she missed them deeply. She understood why Jodar left. His job had taken too much away from his time with Rondara. He needed to rebuild that relationship with her. His ex-wife had done them all a huge disservice by keeping Rondara away from him. Now they had time to make up, and needed to focus on their small family. She wasn’t bitter, but she did miss them.

Karina sat in the silence, realizing how lonely her life had become. She’d never worked this much. She had always taken time for herself, but when Jodar and Rondara left, she had thrown herself into her work. The idea had been to get things done, so when they came back, she would be able to devote time to them whenever they wanted. But now it had become habit because she had nothing to come home to in the evening.

Karina enjoyed her job, it fulfilled her, but there were certainly important things missing in her life. She sipped her Ikava as she watched the hover cars, sliders, and shuttles zoom past her windows and dot the city scape with streaks of light.
