With an arm around Sharah, Yavia led her out of the Governor’s home and toward the private lift. One of the guards was kind enough to give them help with the medical equipment. Yavia, Ilena, and Sharah and slud into the back of the slider.

“Take her home Yavia. Let her rest.” She set a hand on Sharah’s arm. “No, don’t argue. You look horrible and the pain and fatigue are palatable. You need rest. I will tell Lt. Asimina you are with a critical patient all day.” The other Betazed woman looked back at Yavia. “I will return all the equipment to and let Shrine know where you are. I’ll come check on her after my shift.”

Yavia nodded, brushing Sharah’s hair back as she rested on her shoulder. “We’ll take you to the hospital first. It will give her time to rest.” Ilena agreed, running a scan over Sharah. There really wasn’t anything they could do, but let her body work through it. Her Paracortex, as always, was hyper active and whatever Sharah and Governor had done, had left Sharah raw and from the telepathic feel of her, with no defenses left. She needed rest and reprieve, but Ilena wasn’t sure how she would get it.

After dropping Ilena at the hospital, the slider made it’s way across the city, to the semi secluded home of Major General Charles Tenkiller and his partners. Yavia led Sharah inside and down to their room. It was the deepest underground. It was more psychically distant than the rest of the house. She got her I to bed and then laid down beside her. She pulled a blanket over the other woman and wrapped Sharah in her arms.

Sharah slept fitfully. The noise was so insistent. It was always chaotic and always loud, but what she had done had removed what few shields she had. The exhaustion and strain made it difficult to find her way to maintain. It would pass. It had to pass, Sharah couldn’t stay this way. After an hour or so, Yavia woke her with a gently brush of her fingertips over her forehead and temple. It relieved the pain of the headache, but did nothing for the confusion and chaos. She was holding the box with Sharah’s headband. “Come on, Sweetheart. I know it can be a bit uncomfortable getting it set, but it’s been getting better.” She smiled gently, “Though that may not be true today. It will help you sleep better.” Yavia stroked her hair and gently kissed her forehead. “Don’t worry, I won’t leave you at all.”

“I know,” Sharah whispered. Any sound seemed so stark compared to the noise in her head. Yavia helped her sit up and support her while they got the band in place and then turned on. It was almost like putting it on again for the first time, except Sharah knew what to expect. The silence was deafening and the pain caused her to blackout momentarily.

Yavia wiped her face with a damp cloth and held her. She stared into her onyx eyes when she opened them. “Go on to sleep, I know you’re exhausted. Sleep will help, rest, I’ll be right here. Promise.” Sharah nodded as her eyes closed. Yavia hoped it was true that sleep would help. The band was only good for about 16 hours at that power setting. Once it had to be recharged, Yavia didn’t know what they would do.

Yavia sat on the bed beside Sharah. Sharah seemed to sleep more peacefully with the band activated. She wondered what it was like for Sharah. To have her own dreams, uninfluenced by the thoughts of others.

At the very least Sharah slept heavily and Yavia let her. The band caused a kind of incessant background buzz that was annoying, but as long as Yavia was aware of it, she knew the band was working.

Sharah woke some hours later. The band was still working, but she was hungry. It was strange to be so alone. Then she felt Yavia’s hand gently brush her hair back. She opened her eyes, “I’m hungry.”

Yavia’s laughter tripped and danced over her. “Your stomach has been protesting for an hour. I was wondering if you were ever going to listen to it.” Sharah blushed, “I guess I’ve been asleep awhile.”

Yavia nodded, “That’s okay. And before you say it, I loved lying here with you playing hooky. Now how about a grilled cheese?”

Sharah started to sit up, but Yavia stayed her. “I’ll make it. You’ll be okay while I do?” Sharah nodded and returned Yavia’s tender kiss and watched her leave the room. She sighed and closed her eyes again.

Lt. Cmdr. Fayth, SFCMO

Yavia jogged up the stairs and around the counter to the kitchen. She admitted, she didn’t make a grilled cheese as well as Sharah did. The woman had been trying to perfect it for years. Yavia was a decent cook though. She wouldn’t make it for a career or win any competitions, but they did more than just survive on her food. She made two sandwiches and just incase she made a few slices of toast and added the jar of apple butter to the tray. Sharah had said she was hungry, but Yavia knew, when she wasn’t feeling well, she tended to avoid eating.

She set the tray down on the foot of the bed and sat down beside Sharah. She leaned over, cupping her cheek softly and kissed her. Yavia pulled her closer when she felt Sharah sigh and then slowly ended the kiss. “I could live off that alone, but you need to eat, Sweetheart. Come on, sit up a little.”

Yavia

Sharah traced her finger tips over Yavia’s brow and down her temple. “Just one more,” she grinned and leaned in, kissing Yavia again. Then she sat up, propped against the pillows in the hugely oversized bed. She took the sandwich with a happy exclamation and bit into it. “Mmmmm. So good.” She ate like she was starving. Yavia was glad to see her not avoiding food, but concerned over how ravenous she was.

“I don’t need my telepathy to know something is on your mind, Luv. You’re giving me that look. What is it?” Sharah asked setting her plate down and turning fully toward Yavia to look at her.

Lt. Cmdr. Fayth, SFCMO

“Sharah,” Yavia reached out and took her hands and stared into her gorgeous eyes. “I love you. I love your compassion and selflessness. Your ability to care for anyone. But I worry that you don’t care for yourself. You are almost reckless in giving everything to help others no matter the cost to yourself. It scares me.”

She reached out and trailed a hand over her hair and cupped Sharah’s cheek. “It’s like you are trying to self destruct sometimes. If you give everything you might find redemption. But Sweetheart, you don’t need redemption, you haven’t done anything wrong. You are worthy without all the sacrifice.”

Yavia

Sharah stared at her through blurry eyes. She loved this woman so much, and the depth of love Yavia had for her was incomprehensible. “I know, Yavia. It’s a bad habit to break. I feel it, I live it, I suffer with them. The only way to stop it, is to help them, no matter the cost. It’s not really selflessness, but self-preservation.”

Too many sessions with counselors, and an over abundance of faith in Korczak made her honest. “There is that need, that drive for redemption. I know there is, but I’m getting better. I’m trying to anyway.” She brushed the dampness off her cheeks. “I couldn’t let Kenzo do that alone. He would have, and he would have been lost. He didn’t demand it or even ask me to help. People depend on him, a whole colony of people.”

Lt. Cmdr. Fayth, SFCMO

“People depend on you too, Sharah. I don’t just mean me and TK, and how broken we would be without you.” She cupped Sharah’s cheek to stop her from shaking her head ‘no.’ “The hospital, both the civilian staff and the fleet staff. You’ve make Sacred Heart run better than it has in a really long time. Everyone looks up to you, respects you. The people know you take care of the hospital and make sure everyone gets the best treatments. The volunteers at the botanical garden, and all the shops you visit at the market. You bring joy and peace and healing where you go. People depend on seeing you, not because you give them anything other than yourself.” Yavia took a breath, “I know today was an extreme circumstance, but… I worry when you’re like this. You can’t function, you’re in so much pain, and you won’t let me help.”
