“I always warned her the same thing,” Mika said as Yavia helped her back towards bed. “Sharah, just a little something please, I’m not hungry.”

“Hey,” Sharah pouted at Yavia and Tandra, “I do much better these days. Today was just busy.” She nodded and ordered a tray of veggies, fruit, cheese, and crackers for them all to share and brought it over.

Mika smiled, “If I have to keep track, I will.” She said as she settled into bed. She ate a cracker off the tray and looked between them. “So tell me what’s been going on.” Which was code for talk to me so I don’t have to think about my session with Revna.

“Well, Charles’ family has arrived for their visit.” Sharah said, looking uncomfortable.

Yavia snorted, “In otherwords the drama has exploded, and Major General Charles Tenkiller now has a round the clock security detail.”

Mika smiled. “Sounds fun. ....and awkward.” She looked between them. “How is his family?”

“Donna, his mom, is as sweet as can be. Very… even and compassionate. His dad is very stoic. I will get a smile out of him though,” Yavia predicted. “Oh, but let him and TK sing together,” Yavia fanned herself, “It’s magic. I thought Sharah would swoon. Then again that happens anytime TK sings.” She laughed as Sharah swatted her.

“Mary, his younger sister is kind. Very confident and not afraid to speak her mind about anything.” Sharah shifted where she sat, “Or intruding where she wants. Abigail, his older sister is… distant, withdrawn.”

“Oh Sharah stop it. Abigail was horrible.” She put an arm around Sharah and hugged her. “Abby was hateful and crass and xenophobic. She is just as outspoken and opinionated as Mary. She’s angry at TK for being with aliens and called us whores. Then she left the house and ended up attacking Jal’na and Lord Duroc. He almost killed her. Busted up Jal’na’s face pretty badly.”

Mika looked horrified. “That’s terrible.” She said. “At least the rest of them sound nice.” She shook her head, “Somehow, the ability to be hateful surprises me every time.”

“She just feels very isolated and abandoned, she…” Sharah began.

Yavia interrupted her, “Sharah you can find the good in anyone. She was horrible to you, even after you came to the hospital to take care of her.”

Sharah shrugged, “Most people are horrible to me, Yavia. It doesn’t hurt me to try and understand.”

Yavia obviously didn’t like that response.

Mika smiled. “I always loved that about Sharah. I think it’s necessary to try and understand why…” She gave Sharah a look, “without giving them excuses or letting horrible behavior go.”

Sharah leaned against Yavia and reached for Tandra’s hand. “I know, but I can only control me. I can’t change people. They have to do that.”

Mika nodded. “I know.” She took Sharah’s hand and squeezed it. “I believe in understanding why people do things the way they do, without excusing that they’ve done it. You can’t change them, but you can understand why.”

Sharah glanced away and shrugged. “It helps, you know, to understand. Sometimes it makes the hurt less.”

Mika nodded. “The one thing I envy about Betazoids.” She commented. “The ability to understand so easily.”

“It can be useful, but it isn’t exact either. Knowing why and understanding are different. Sharah has a gift for understanding though.”
