Alston had to begrudgingly admit that it had been nice to get back into the field again. Sure he had a few adventures on some of his cargo runs, but it wasn’t quite the same as pulling off an actual operation. But as fun as it was, it was time to get back to the real world. And he had one last task to complete before he could call the job complete.Stepping out of the lift, he stepped over to one of the analysts who was working outside of Reilly’s office.
“Is he in?” Alston asked gesturing towards the closed door of Reilly’s office.
- Mace
The analyst looked up and said “Yes, sir. He’s expecting you. Go on in.”
At his approach, the doors slid open to the office of the Deputy Director. Reilly was seated at a desk reading a PaDD and looked up as Mace entered. He held up a finger in the universal sign for quiet and pointed to his ear. A small earbud could be seen. He motioned to one of the chairs in front of the desk.
He was silent a few more moments and then said =/\= No. … No. … Very much no. … Well, then inform the Admiral that he’ll be better off reading about the operation in the news the next day… Surely he must have a subscription. =/\= and he tapped the PaDD and pulled out the earbud. He smiled at Mace and said “Well hello! How did it go?”, his voice clearly indicating he already knew.
Reilly, Deputy Director - CIA
Alston chuckled to himself as he took the seat. He leaned back in the chair and crossed his legs as he watched Reilly.
“Oh, it was fine. Sounds like you have a lot more interesting problems going on though. Starfleet or local?”
- Mace
“Yes.” Reilly said with a slight smile. “But that is neither here nor there. I read the preliminary reports. It sounds like the operation went smoothly. What was your impression of the agents you worked with?”
Reilly, CIA
Alston raised an eyebrow at that. It was never good when the Starfleet brass had your number.
“Effective. Good improvisation, and they weren’t scared of some more, let’s say unorthodox, techniques. Worked well as a unit, but also very capable of independent work and initiative.
“I’d work with them again in a heart beat. But there is no way I’d put either of them with a traditional team, not if I wanted to ever see that team sane again,” he finished with a chuckle.
Reilly grinned in response.
“And in the end, we were able to complete the objective in a very timely manner.”
Reaching into his pocket, Alston pulled out the chip and started bouncing it in the palm of his hand.
- Mace
“And I take it we were able to secure all the data? Did Tech go over it? Or are you going for a more ‘What’s Behind Door Number Three’ kinda thing?” and he chuckled.
Reilly, CIA
“Good choice picking door number 3, door 2 was the Zonk. Door 3 though, that isquite the prize. Tech looked over the hardware we extracted, plus the chips we took off him. Not only did we get the data, he kindly left his customer book for us as well. Vonn independently confirmed the information as well. Not to mention that Tech is still drooling over the hardware we took from Lyssandra’s room.
“I can imagine. Her reputation is… was… something of note.” Reilly said with a grin.
“I had them take Drez to one of the holding cell. Starfleet might want their list back, but they aren’t always the best choice to just hand over someone to. I’ve known more then a few people that have escaped Starfleet custody, and I don’t think we can risk him hitting the streets again.”
- Mace
Reilly nodded and said “Too true.” He looked at Mace for a moment and then said “What is your opinion of, well, ‘permanent insurance policies’ that would keep that from happening.”
Reilly, CIA
“I’ve done a number of things during my career, but the one thing I’m not is a cold blooded killer. I’m not going to condone making him just disappear. We may operate in the background, but our job isn’t to be judge, jury and executioner.
Reilly smiled. “Good answer.”
“That being said, I’m all for making his life as miserable as possible. I’d need to look at the list of all who has a warrant out for his arrest, but I’m sure we could find one that will make sure he never sees the light of day again.”
- Mace
Reilly smiled wider. “I like the way you think…” he said and tapped the PaDD and then slid it across to Mace. On it was a list of governments who had warrants out for their ‘guest’. Andorians, Klingon Romulans, Cardassians, Vulcans, and several others had outstanding warrants for his arrest. There was even a FedSec warrant on the list. But one stood out form the rest: The Breen Confederacy. And it came with a sizable bounty.
Reilly, CIA
“Some good choices here. The Cardassian warrant would have been fun back in the day, but I have to admit, after the Dominion, they’ve dramatically change their approach. Vulcans would probably try to rehabilitate him, or something like that. Andoria would be fun, not many escape attempts when you are likely to freeze once you get out of their hands.”
Alston continued tracing his finger down the list before he stopped and laughed out loud.
“Vonn would get a kick out of this one.” Clicking on the PaDD he brought up the Breen warrant and slid it back across the desk.
“I’ve never even heard of a person coming out of a Breen facility without them knowing, let alone have met one. They like their secrets more then most races, so they really aren’t going to think highly of someone known for stealing them. And it comes with a nice little cash reward. Which is just a nice little cherry on top.”
- Mace
“The Confederacy it is, then. We’ll absorb the bounty into the operational budget and give the team a little ‘unofficial’ bonus.” Reilly said. He tapped a few commands into the PaDD and then then leaned back in his chair and looked at Mace. “So. Trial run over. Assets observed. Operational capabilities demonstrated. What do you think? Are you interested in staying on full-time?”
Reilly, CIA
“Everyone does enjoy a nice little payday,” he said with a chuckle.
Alston leaned back in his chair and steepled his fingers, he sat there for a moment just studying Reilly. “You make a very persuasive argument Mr. Reilly. I have to admit, I didn’t quite know what to expect when you originally approached me, but what you have going here is much more impressive then I would have expected.”
He trailed off as he continued to think it over. In the end, what did he really have to lose. He still have his old contacts as a fall back, and he even had to admit that it was fun to get back into the game.
“On two conditions. First, I have do have a few outstanding contracts that I need to close out. Nothing that interferes with operations here, but I may need some time away to get this sorted out. Second, I’m not getting stuck behind a desk.”
- Mace
Reilly thought for a moment. “The contracts are not an issue. The desk may be, as the role you were recruited for is more… ‘administrative and political’… than it is field work.” He paused a moment and then said ” Well.... you could always just do what you want; at least for a while. I mean it’s not like anyone is in role to really stop you form doing the operations. But if you end up getting caught or killed, we don’t really have any plausible deniability. But we could burn that bridge when we get to it. Or…” and his voice trailed off for a moment and then he shrugged. “Or we could always trade, if you like. You take on the role of Deputy Director with authority to order Operations and run specific missions as you see fit, as I do. I’ll step into the Director Role and deal with the politicians and bureaucrats… and make sure that any flak is directed elsewhere. You and I both get briefings and decide who needs to do what and when. Then you make it happen while I make sure no one gets their undies in a bunch.” He cocked his head to the side and looked at Mace. “What do you think? It’s your agency right now… you get to make the final call.”
Reilly, CIA Deputy Director
Alston cursed under his breath as he reached up to rub his forehead. He had to admit it was fun being back out in the field. But with the Starfleet personal here, it was only a matter of time before his ID started pinging the right databases. It didn’t take much clearance to see that much of his service record was stamped classified. And as inquisitive as people are, it wouldn’t take much to guess what line of work he had been in. And his cover as a merchant would only go so far if he was constantly seen on the planet. Especially if they even poked a little and saw he had been working on the far side of the quadrant from OED.
No, as much as he hated it, it made more sense for him to be known. His reputation would bring more credibility to the agency. And him wanting to play cowboy was not a good enough reason to put either the agency, or any of their agents, at risk.
“I’ll take it, till I get killed, or you find someone better. And I’ll play nice and let the young guns have their fun in the field. But,” he said raising a finger at Reilly. “But don’t think this gets you out of glad handing with the politicians from time to time.”
