“Good afternoon, Captain McBride, thank you for seeing me on such short notice.” Tannenn said with a light smile. as she regarded the taller man, “I hope I didn’t interrupt too much of your schedule?” nothing bothered her as much as interrupting another’s work.

“Not at all. I’m always eager to meet new members of my senior staff, and given everything going on right now, we need to get you situated ASAP,” Jonathan said with a smile and gestured to the chairs at his desk. “Please, Commander, have a seat. I hope your journey here went smoothly? Oed’s a long ways out, so it’s always a toss up.”

Tannenn smiled in relief, as she slid into one of the offered seats. “My pet ferrets did not escape their carrier during the trip, so I consider it a successful journey. In all honesty though everything was fine, thank you for asking.” she regarded him, “I am just glad for the chance and more knowledge. I hear we’re going to be having a gala soon?”

Jonathan nodded. “Oed will be hosting a diplomatic contingent of Vren. If you haven’t heard about them, they are our nearest non-Federation neighbour and in the past there had been raids and attacks. Oed was disputed territory but we hadn’t heard anything from them in years. They’ve reached out the Federation for help due to a climate crisis that is quickly threatening their population. Negotiations and everything will happen here on Oed and this gala is basically the colony’s first contact face-to-face ever. So, high stakes, and a lot of risk. Expect Starfleet Science to be highly involved along with the civilian side in the research and discussions about their situation. And also expect a higher than usual security presence everywhere.”

“Sounds like it is going to be very busy indeed. I will read up as much as I can so I don’t step on any toes or anything.” she said lightly but she really meant that she would study up so she wasn’t surprised by anything about the Vren. Keen and she did not currently know anything about the Vren she always enjoyed learning about new species and cultures. Keen had moments where the reaction was enthusiastic or complete boredom. She never knew what Keen’s perspective was going to draw out but she generally managed it well.

McBride nodded. “There is some limited information that we’ve been given, but keep in mind that it is not at all as much as you would like. After all, we only just learned what a Vren even looked like, recently, let alone their physiology and the ecology that is being threatened. Much will have to come from ur interactions with them, provided the early stages go well.” He gestured between them. “Our task as the senior Starfleet officers here is to help guide that interaction by making sure Oed is safe and the decision makers have everything they need to get on with the work of diplomacy. And you yourself will have a big role to play, but a lot of it is going to be us waiting around for the next step to occur,” he said with a lopsided smirk.
