Kenzo listened and watched her as she spoke, taking care not to intrude on her emotions too much… but the lack of emotion sent alarm bells ringing in his mind. When Eela finished talking, he let quiet hang in the air for a long time before speaking. Like her, he looked out over the city and not at her.

“You say you are looking for a clue… a clue for what? Do you think his death is the result of some conspiractorial act? You say someone from his past showed up.” and he sighed. “It does not take a great leap of logic to deduce Mr. Jones’ past was a… ‘colorful’… one.” He then turned to look at her. “All the more reason for you to keep your distance. We are exposed here, Eela… you and I. This is the most precarious position we have ever been in thus far. So we need to keep our involvement as minimal as possible. Allow the police to investigate. Let the evidence be gathered and allow it to speak for itself. You and I both need to take great pains to ensure that there is no justifiable cause to accuse of meddling in a Police matter. He looked backout over the city. “You must leave it alone, Eela. For now. But I assure you you will be present at all of the briefings surrounding this.”

“Oh, I have no doubt they’ll be questioning me sooner rather than later. It’s no secret we were seeing each other. Hell, we made a very public outing of our first date Besides, I was one of the last ones to see him alive. He left my place, oh, what, four hours ago? If they don’t come talk to me, they’re idiots. The clue I need to figure out is what he was going to tell me. What had him so uneasy? It was an anomaly and it’s sitting very weirdly with me.”

Kenzo took a breath and exhaled slowly. “You are in crisis, Eela. I can feel it. Even if you could be a part of this… you can’t like this. You won’t make sound judgements. And sound judgements are what we need the most of right now.”

Kenzo

She sighed. “Well I can’t sit around my place doing nothing. That’s not helpful either. I’m going in to the office. They can find me there when they get to it. Besides, Cort, Elema and Sherri should hear the news from me first. We should also talk to Mathis and Caputo about an official statement. It makes sense for Caputo to do so, to give Jeanette some time for herself to-” Eela was interrupted by her comm chirping and she pulled the earpiece out of her pants pocket and activated it. “Dasca.”

She inhaled deeply and looked at Kenzo briefly. “It’s Dee.”

Kenzo nodded and looked away, giving her a moment of psuedo-privacy.

“No, I’m not at home, sorry about breakfast. I’m with the Governor right now. We’re dealing with a situation… Mhmmm… No I won’t make it back to my place, but Dee, I need you to do something for me… I need you and Kian and Alais to stay in the building today. You can use the pool and I will have security let you into my place. You can take Alais to play on the patio if you like… No, things are not okay right now. I just need to know you are all safe and that will help me a lot… Thank you. I’ll call you a little later… Love you too. Bye.”

Eela pulled the device out of her ear and simply held it in her hand. It was a little after 0600 and it wasn’t a terrible time to go into work. It’s not like there wasn’t a pile of stuff waiting for her anyway. It was a Monday afterall, and after the gala.

Kenzo looked at her and said “I would strongly recommend you do not stay in the office. Speak to your staff, of course. But again… you are not in the right frame of mind to be dealing with colonial matters, Eela. I can feel it… even if you do not.”

Kenzo

She almost, almost rolled her eyes at him but instead Eela threw her hands out to the side. “What else am I exactly supposed to do then?” She sighed. “Fine. I was going to check on the Mathis’ anyway. I go see them after I’m done at the Tower. What do you think about having Caputo make the statement though?”

~Eela

“I agree. She would be the most impartial, and is more adept at dealing with the media pushing for answers that we simply do not have yet.” He stood up and offered her a hand. “And when you are done with the Ambassador, perhaps you and I should meet with Ambassador Kek. Let him know that something has occurred as well.”

Kenzo

She took his hand and hauled herself to her feet, the familiar whir of her brace sounding. At least for the moment she was running on adrenaline and the little sleep hadn’t caught up to her. Besides, she had spent most of her life living with an unpredictable schedule, so her body was all but trained to function when it might not be otherwise inclined. Eela nodded. “Alright. I’ll let you know when I’m free to see Kek.” A part of her momentarily wondered when the police would get around to her. She imagined that it would be an interesting game of timing.

~Eela

Kenzo held her hand. “When you are done informing the staff, please return here. One, we need to talk through potentialities. And two, you should not be by yourself.” He let go of her hand slowly, and then said “Please make sure Ms. Fen is in your briefing. She will want to know as well.”

Kenzo

“I’ll include her of course.” Eela would never presume to tell his assistant anything, but if he requested it, it was another matter. For a moment as he held her hand, Eela was torn. She knew Caridee and her family were safe, but a part of her wanted to see them with her own eyes before too long. Then again, the last thing she needed was her daughter adding to the reminders that everyone else was giving her. she would need to tell them before it hit the news, but right now there was another sequence of events to follow.

She slipped his hand out of hers and took a step away, but half turned back, amusement touching her face. “Is it even possible for me to be alone around here? If it’s not you making the suggestion, I’m sure I’ll have several more by Noon. Just…” She paused, searching for the right words. “Remember that I’ve been through many, many crises in my life Kenzo. Believe it or not, I’m actually very good during them. I trained my whole life to handle them, lives on the line and all. I understand you’re asking me for restraint, but don’t tie my hands entirely.”

~Eela

“I know your past, Eela. I know that you are steady in a crisis. I also know that no one is perfectly consistent when it comes to handling crisis. Sometimes… sometimes the situation is more intense than we credit it being.” He looked at her a long time, and then a cascade of support and concern washed over her. “Tell them… then return here. And if you wish, I can have your family moved somewhere more… secluded. That is up to you.”

Kenzo

She accepted the support he offered but other than that, still nothing flowed back through their connection. Her hazel eyes studied him intently for a moment. “I want to believe they are safe in my building, in my home, but after the bug? I don’t know. I will think on it”

Eela gave him a nod. “I’ll be back after the Tower and then I guess we’ll take it from there.” She turned and headed for the door. “Once more unto the breach…”

~Eela

“No matter which you go to, heaven or hell, may your mind be clear like the sky at dawn.” he said softly, just loud enough for her hear before he turned back to look at the garden.

Kenzo

At 0758 hours, Eela arrived back at Kenzo’s building. She had discreetly called Captain McBride and filled him in, and he agree that they should move to a ‘quiet’ yellow alert until the news broke. Starfleet Security was now called to duty stations and extra patrols initiated.

Then she called Caridee, and as expected her daughter was worried for her, empathetic and supportive. She understood her mother’s request to remain put and agreed to wait at Eela’s place. Eela was just glad they were talking over the comm. She wasn’t sure she could handle Caridee’s empathy and awareness. She really didn’t need a psychiatrist at the moment, and certainly not someone who connected to her.

Stepping out of the slider, Eela repeated the earlier movements up to Kenzo’s and it all felt too much like dejavu. She was just going through the motions. She was let into his place and this time just stood in the entryway. “I’m back…” she called out. A simple and obvious statement gven he’d sense she was there and very much like before, all focused mind and no emotions.
