Mirth sparkled in Caridee’s eyes. “Oh, so I get to play chaperone? Well this is a fun reversal.” She turned to her mother. “You’ll just have to save it for your date tomorrow night, now won’t you?”

Eela laughed. “Yes, yes, I’ll be a good girl, for now,” she said as she rose to her feet and turned back to face Karilan and broke into a beaming smile. “Wait one minute. I want to show you the dress.”

The duo slipped off into Eela’s bathroom and it took little time for Caridee to zip Eela into the dress. When Eela stepped out, her whole demeanour had shifted. The nerves were gone and she carried herself with grace, letting the thick fabric of the small train float behind her. Tracking her position, she turned very slowly so Karilan could see how the magenta gown hugged her body all the way past her hips till it flared out dramatically. Eela spread her arms out and dipped into a graceful partial curtsey, her eyes alight. Behind her, Caridee was gazing at her mother with awe as she shook her head slightly. “Well? What do you think?” Eela said. This was very different than that first date with Dash and her changing dress surprise. It was as she described before a dress that made her feel both elegant and powerful.

Karilan’s eyes went wide and she shook her head. “I don’t know what the Vren find attractive… but if that isn’t on the list? Then I don’t see what we are saving.” she said and then grinned at Eela. “You look amazing. Just… gorgeous!”

Karilan

Eela couldn’t beam wide enough to convey how much she had hoped for that reaction. “Thank you. I do miss my dress uniform sometime, but I think I’m liking the alternative options I have now.”

“Well I certainly am!” Karilan said with a wink and a smile.

Caridee snorted. “Don’t listen to her. She’ll make you think she never wore anything else in her life but a uniform. I don’t know if she’s exposed you to the Haliian need to have parties yet Karilan, but I can guarantee you she never pulls her uniform out for those. And she certainly doesn’t go naked.”

“I suppose that would depend on the kind of party…” Karilan said with a grin.

Eela burst out laughing. “Well, that would certainly make a statement. I’m not sure Oed could handle such a statement, nor do I want to give one like that but it’s an amusing thought.”

She leaned in a little and checked the time and then smiled at Karilan. “Thanks for keeping me company. I’ll send you snippets from the gala where appropriate. But we should go collect the rest of our party before we’re any more late.”

“Go on and get out of there. And have fun!’ Karilan said reaching for the interface.

“And I look forward to dinner!” Caridee said.

“Me too!” Karilan said and the screen went dark.

Karilan

The two woman chuckled and Eela took a moment to gather her clutch and a shawl and they headed downstairs to collect Kian and Alais. Eela was glad she had called Karilan. Something about her friend’s reassurance and merciless teasing settled her nerves. Perhaps it was that sense of normalcy amongst the whirl of high risk chaos that they were all in that soothed in some ways. Either way, Eela was bolstered and now she had another dinner to look forward to onto of the weekend she promised Karilan they would have.
