She pulled breath into her lungs and slowly let it out. Eela gave the two men a small, if weary, smile. “You know, every now and again, for brief moments, I forget that I am always watched. It should bother me, but I guess I’m just used to it at this point.” Dacsa shook her head and gazed at Mace. “I am as fine as I can be given the chaotic flurry that my life is. But don’t worry, I’ve got this,” she said with a wink, her confidence having easily slipped back into the mix.
Dacsa shifted her attention to Iven. “Lieutenant, I don’t think we’ve met formally yet.”

“No Captain, this would be our first time.” Séan responded quietly.
“Ah, but if people remembered just how often that they were being watched, it would make some jobs a whole lot harder,” Alston said with a chuckle. After a moment he met Dasca’s eyes. While she showed confidence at the moment, he could see that the mask was only so deep. But at the moment it seemed like she was not needing or wanting the extra attention, and given his current position, he was more then willing to give it to her. This time.
With a nod, Alston broke eye contact, and pushed a smile onto his face. “In that case,” he said reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small linen business, “if I can ever be of any service, feel free to contact me.” He offered the card to her.
Eela took the card with a tiny smirk, the unexpected gesture seeming to play into the secret of the man that only a very select few knew, including her. “Thank you,” she said, studying the card.
It was something he had picked up back when he was first starting his ‘trading’ business, a touch that his wealthier clientele appreciated. The card itself was very simple. Solid black, with the white outline of a fox on one side, and a comm frequency for a private messaging service on the reverse. In a digital world, something tangible had served him well.
“Captain,” he said with one last nod before continuing on his path out of the courtyard.

Dasca gave a bow of her head as he left and tucked the card into her work bag.
He watched the other man leave then turned his attention again to Eela. “This is a rather public space for a formal introduction and I want to respect your privacy. Would you mind if I sat and we took a moment to get to know each other informally?”

She gestured to the space on the bench beside her. “By all means, Lieutenant, join me,” Eela said, letting her gaze drift back out over the courtyard. Her public facade was firmly back in place, but her gaze was still soft. She wasn’t going to hide from him, even if she felt the need to protect herself a little in this open space.

“Thank you.” Séan said before he sat next to her on the bench. He too looked out over the courtyard and took in the occasional person coming and going. “Things have been very busy as of late.” He started to talk about recent events. “I’ve thankfully not been dragged into the mayhem but my department head has been very busy in preparations. I imagine everyone directly involved is a bit overwhelmed with this momentous occasion.”
Counselor Iven
“Overwhelmed is an understatement,” Dasca said. “I don’t know a single person working in the Tower directly for the event, or a lot of other places for that matter, that hasn’t been working exceptionally long hours these last couple of weeks. Tomorrow… it’s a make or break situation, Lieutenant. If it doesn’t go well, either the amount of diplomatic ground we would have to make up with the Vren will be daunting, or the population of Oed will say ‘absolutely not, we’re out.’ So people like myself have to convince everyone this is a good idea and also bridge cultural divides that might be very difficult. Just a couple hours ago I was on the Orbital Platform doing diplomatic work I had done many times before. I’m used to the pressure, but it’s different when you’re the one who could walk away versus the role I’m in now. I have five million people all looking to me. And that’s not even factoring in the rest of the Federation that’s waiting to see how this all plays out,” she said with a humourless laugh.

“That’s a very heavy burden Captain. How have you been coping with the stress of it all?” Séan inquired with some sympathy in his voice. “Not that I want to be the typical nagging counselor, byt despite having a very busy schedule it is vital that you take moments to decompress. I’m glad to see that you’re doing so now.”
