Josh folded his arms across his chest and stepped into the office. He averted his gaze but certainly didn’t both removing the scowl that appeared. He had a feeling his parents, or at least his father (a miner), would be on his side. He’d understand.

Ch’zaahril closed the door firmly and walked over in front of him. “Have a seat, and explain to me what happened this time.”

Headmaster Ch’zaahril

Josh all but slumped into the chair, arms still folded across his chest. “What does it even matter?” he grumbled. “It’s not like anyone cares.”

Ch’zaahril leaned against the edge of the desk, palms of his hands resting relaxed at his side and waited. Josh’s problem was he assumed no one cared or understood. In fact the opposite was true. They cared a lot and worried about what was causing him to act out so often and to such a degree. Forcing him to talk however wouldn’t get answers. But he would like Josh to start talking before his father arrived and tried, yet again to control his son and brush it all under the rug.

Headmaster Ch’zaahril

It was no coincidence that Josh had had more arguments with people more recently, nor that the timeline lined up with the press conference announcing the future negotiations with the Vren.

Josh sat there silent for another couple minutes before he dropped his gaze. “She cries every day. She thinks I don’t know, but I hear her. Dad’s always at the mine and working late, so he doesn’t see it. I don’t think he knows. She started hyperventilating watching that stupid press conference with that idiotic Ambassador.” Josh’s head snapped up. “Peace… with the *Vren!?!” It’s like everyone lost their mind. They don’t care about those who died. Like my grandfather. Or my mom who was caught in the rubble from a building. My dad said she nearly died and she won’t talk about it, but so did the brother I never got have.” He had never told anyone about that baby, not the fact that he knew his mom had been terrified of having him and even now sometimes it felt like she was scared of being a mother. “Everytime I see that Mathis kid, I just get so…” He balled up his fists and looked away.

Ch’zaahril nodded slowly, once. “Josh, why haven’t you told your father about your mom? I’m sure he would want to know.” If nothing else Josh’s father obviously loved his family. “I can not imagine how hard this must be for her or for you.”

Headmaster Ch’zaahril

Josh shrugged and looked elsewhere. “Maybe he does. I don’t know everything they talk about.” He let out an exasperated sigh. “Look, just suspend me or whatever you’re going to do. I promise I will stay away from the Mathis kid.”

“Josh you are a bright young man. You’re studies show that. You’re teachers speak highly of your ability and the work you produce, it’s the fighting. I don’t want to suspend you, I want you to find a better way to express your anger.”

Outside, a woman entered the office and approached the secretary and spoke softly. “Hello, again,” Mrs. Woods said with a resigned. “What was it this time?” It was hardly the first time she or her husband had been here.

The secretary nodded, “Hello Mrs. Woods.” She looked sympathetic, “He was fighting.” The headmaster’s door opened, “Mrs Woods, please come in.”

Headmaster Ch’zaahril

Josh’s mother stepped in with a sigh. She took in Josh and the nose that at least seemed to not be actively bleeding, but certainly looked like someone had hit him. She looked at the headmaster and took a seat next to her son. “How serious is it?” she said softly.
