Twenty minutes later, after getting acquainted with Eela’s empathic vine, and Eela catching up with Cort (and avoiding all incoming calls for the time being- including a particular Admiral who was being a thorn in her side), she brought her family up the lift to Kenzo’s floor. As much fun as it would be to show them their secret staircase, it was a no-no.

“Hello, Ms. Fen,” Eela greeted with a smile, still carrying Alais on her hip. Oh Jal’na was probably going to give her hell for it later, but honestly, right now she didn’t care. “I do hope I’m interrupting him,” she said with a conspiratorial gleam. If his list of messages and people to talk to was anything like hers, they would do best to leave the office early on this Friday. There was nothing that couldn’t wait until after tomorrow’s gala, surely.

Dorma looked slightly more… ‘harried’… than she normally let anyone see, but her raised finger and a gesture to the ear clip comm piece showed there was a lot going on. “Admiral, while I am sure you believe that your presence at the gala is of, as you said, ‘of paramount importance to Star Fleet and the Federation’; I can assure you that not only are you not on the guest list, but if you attempt to inject your presence into the event I will take it as a personal goal to toss you bodily out the door and into the waiting crowd of media myself. Good evening, sir.” and she tapped the ear piece and smiled at Eela. “Lieutenant Governor, good to see you.” she said as she rose to her feet. “This must be your family. A pleasure. I am Dorma Fen, the Governor’s Assistant. One moment, please.”

She touched the display in her desk and said “Tjey have arrived, sir.” “Show them in and then go home, Ms. Fen. Get some rest. That is an order.” came the voice of Kenzo as the doors to his office opened into the waiting area. Dorma xame around the desk and led them inside.

“This is Caridee and Kian, and this one on my hip is Alais,” Eela said.

“It’s really nice to meet you,” Caridee said, having heard the names and now getting to match faces.

Eela gestured for Caridee and Kian to go first and Eela leaned in towards Dorma with and whispered, “If any more Starfleet personnel try to bypass me, by all means send them my way. I’m happy to take that off your hands,” she said with a conspiratorial gleam in her hazel eyes. Admirals throwing their rank around were her problem, and she was dealing with them quite handily lately. Besides, like all the executive suite staff, Dorma was managing far more than any of them normally had to. Yes, these were unprecedented times, but both Eela and Kenzo were minded to make sure their staff were taken care of. It was a team effort.

A large table had been set up by the seating area. Finger sandwiches, sushi, small bites and such were arranged tastefully across it, and drinks were set at the end. Kenzo stood up from his desk and said “Welcome. Please, come and eat. Then sit.” and he gestured to the couches set before the fireplace.

The quartet entered and Eela was probably more relaxed than she had been in days, even if a lot of her stress was just buried a bit deeply. It was just hard to be upset about things with the kids here. At least for this brief moment she could have a reprieve. Besides, it’d been so long since she got to be around the baby and it made her nostalgic for some of the times when her own were this age.

“Thank you,” Kian said and moved to make a couple plates for himself and Caridee.
Caridee held out her hands and wiggled her fingers for Eela to pass over Alais. Eela feigned a pout. “Fiiiine, you can take her.”
“It’s either that or she gets food all over your lovely dress, and I thought the perk of being a grandmother was that you got to hand them over when you needed to.”
Eela chuckled. “I suppose there is something to that.”

Caridee moved to grab a couple sandwiches for the baby and Eela moved over to Kenzo, speaking quietly. “I overheard Fen’s latest annoyance. Cort was fielding his own calls earlier while we were at the Platform, including one from my more consistent pain in the ass. I’m in a mood to make my thoughts very clear, so I’ll take them.”

Kenzo shook gis head slightly. “I would recommend allowing them to deal with them.” Kenzo said softly. “Nothing frustrates pompous political machinations than being unable to speak with those in charge. I instructed Ms. Fen to obstruct any tyempted communication, civily of course, to me until a full day after the gala. That will do more to convey those particular individuals standing in our priorities than anything else.” and he inclined his head to her slightly. “Just my tact and a suggestion, of course.”

“It might depend on my mood,” she said with a gleam in her eyes before she moved off and grabbed a plate. She only placed a couple small bites and a few pieces of sushi on the plate, and then moved over towards the fireplace.

Hyrushi looked at the family and moved to sit down. “So tell me about yourselves. I have heard much from the good Captain, but I am curious to know more.”

Caridee looked up and smiled. “Well, I’m a psychiatrist. I work at a teaching hospital attached to one the universities, where I’m one of the emergency psychiatry attendings. It’s probably 90% of my time, and then I do community outreach as well to varying degrees. It’s busy,” she said with a laugh.

“It was amazing I could get her to take a whole three months off,” Kian said. “But when we worked out how long it would take us to get here from Earth and then back, it didn’t make sense to just stay for Batarael. Besides, we wanted to spend time with Eela,” he said, shooting his mother-in-law a warm smile. “It just worked out nicely for me, because I teach high school science and I only had to miss a few weeks of the end of the year. We should be back in time for the new school year, and the trip back will give me time to do lesson and semester planning.”

“How did you get that much time off anyway, Dee?” Eela asked.
Her cheeks flushed. “Well, I might have borrowed a page from your book and threatened to quit.”
Eela burst into laughter. “I feel like I should apologize to them, but I won’t.”

Hyrushi looked at Dasca and said “You can remove that page from your book, Captain. You are simply not allowed to resign.” he said flatly, but in such a way that only she would get his humor. He looked back at Caridee and Kian and said “High school science… was that always your goal? Or did you specialize in any particular field?”

Eela popped a piece of sushi into her mouth with her fingers and just gave Kenzo an amused smirk.

“Well, I was working on a degree in biology, and had intended to go on to a Masters, but I was working at a teen summer camp before my last year started and I really enjoyed it. I seem to get along with teenagers. So instead of doing a Masters of Biology, I got a teaching degree and last year I finished a Masters of Education.”

Caridee grinned. “We actually met while he was working at the camp. One of his campers became a patient, which is a long story, but we got married four years ago. We actually celebrate our anniversary before we leave Oed.”

“Indeed? How fortuitous, being able to share the day with your mother and mother-in-law.” Hyrushi said. He looked at the baby and said “And tell me about this little one. She certainly looks like both of you… although the exploratory streak she appears to have I would say is a gift of her grandmother.”
