“Did it go well?” Caridee asked. “I know you can’t give detail but you seem in a good mood, so I’m hoping that’s a positive sign.”
She nodded. “You know, I’m feeling optimistic about it all, even though it comes with a great deal of caution.” Eela looked at Kenzo. Caridee was right that they couldn’t talk details, but it wasn’t exactly a secret that the Vren had arrived today. Everyone was talking about it. “We live in interesting times. Certainly this is a first in my career, and I think your as well.” First contacts were one thing. Negotiating with (hopefully) former enemies was another. The two merging. “It went better than we feared, but not as well as was ideal. But no blood was shed, so that is a significant first step.” Kenzo said. He looked at Alais and sent her a gentle feeling of reassurance and friendship, and then looked at Caridee and Kian. “Take all the time you need to settle in, but know that you both are listed on the gala guest list for tomorrow.” He looked at Eela and said “Consider that Contingency Plan Nine.” He looked back at the new arrivals, folded his hands behind his back, and said “If you will please excuse me, I have some matters to attend to in my office. If you wish, you are all welcome to join me there once you are done here. I will have food sent up, just in case.” He bowed to the group, gave Eela a long look, and then turned and stepped into the lift and the doors slid closed.
Hyrushi, Gov.
Eela watched him leave and shook her head. Trust him to casually toss those things in there with such ease. Ever the enigma and ever the surprise. She turned back to her children (they weren’t super close yet, but she still considered Kian a son) and Caridee looked amused. “You know you could have warned me to bring a formal gown. I’ve got dressy clothes but I wasn’t expecting a gala.”
“As if I knew!” Eela said with a throaty chuckle. “But I guess we’re going to have to sort that out. You can look through my closet first, if you like. There might be something there you like.”
Caridee cast a glance at her husband. “Supposing we can find someone to watch Alais, what do you say to a little glitz and historical diplomatic firsts?”
“Sounds like less work than corralling high schoolers, and if we’re not punch drunk from travel and time change, it could be quite fun.” Kian shrugged. “Count us in, but we’ve only just got here and since you’re going to be leading the whole thing, I guess you can’t babysit, huh?” he said with a grin.
Eela laughed. “As much as I would love to”-she tapped Alais on the nose-“I am otherwise engaged and trying to make it all seem effortless. But on another day, little one, you and I are going to go have some fun.”
“How much trouble can you get into with an infant?” Kian asked, his eyes gleaming.
“You’d be amazed at what she can get herself into,” Caridee said with a lopsided grin, gazing directly at Eela. “This is the koonita after all.
Brows raised, she huffed, spun on the ball of her foot and headed off into her office, all the while wearing a grin. “Come on baby girl, let me introduce you to Tiika.”
The couple exchanged a look with Elema who was admittedly loving all of it. They shrugged and followed Eela in.
Twenty minutes later, after getting acquainted with Eela’s empathic vine, and Eela catching up with Cort (and avoiding all incoming calls for the time being- including a particular Admiral who was being a thorn in her side), she brought her family up the lift to Kenzo’s floor. As much fun as it would be to show them their secret staircase, it was a no-no.
“Hello, Ms. Fen,” Eela greeted with a smile, still carrying Alais on her hip. Oh Jal’na was probably going to give her hell for it later, but honestly, right now she didn’t care. “I do hope I’m interrupting him,” she said with a conspiratorial gleam. If his list of messages and people to talk to was anything like hers, they would do best to leave the office early on this Friday. There was nothing that couldn’t wait until after tomorrow’s gala, surely.
