“I hope you are correct… for all of our sakes.” he said as they stepped into the lift. As they began to move up the Tower, he looked at Eela and said “So is your family here already? Or will you be meeting them later?”

Hyrushi, Gov.

Eela’s pensive expression shifted into a grin and she pointed up. “As per Contingency Number Four, they’re waiting at my office,” she said with a chuckle. “Want to come and say hello? It would give you a reason to delay going back to your office and you can’t tell me that isn’t appealing given people are going to bombard us with stuff about our brief greeting with the Vren and tomorrow’s gala.” She waggled her brows, which had a slightly comical wave against her forehead ridges.

Kenzo smiled slightly, still a rarity even with as close as the two had become, and he said “I need no excuse to meet your family other than it would be my honor to do so.” and then he gave her a small smirk. “The fact that it will keep me from my office is simply a happy coincidence.”

Hyrushi, Gov.

“And don’t we love those, infrequent that they are.” Entering the lift, she waited till he was in and called out her floor. It rushed upwards and Eela let out a steadying breath. As much as she felt the welcoming of the Vren had gone well, she didn’t want to bring that anxiety with her upstairs to her family. She glanced at Kenzo, her unexpected confidant and friend. Their past selves from the day before she arrived would probably be incredulous if they had been told this special friendship would develop. It was even better for the surprise.

The lift deposited them at her door where the purple-haired Elema was chatting with a woman and a man at the reception desk. Her office door was open and there was a brief sighting of Cort crossing her office.

The couple immediately turned and upon seeing Eela, grinned. The woman bore a striking resemblance to her mother, though her facial ridges were softer, jaw more angular, and pale blue eyes. The man had thick medium length rich brown hair nestled around his leaf-shaped forehead ridge. His deep brown eyes radiated gentle warmth.

Caridee’s expression shifted into dismay and Eela preempted her apology. “Don’t you dare say you’re sorry. Crap happens. Besides, I have you here now and that’s everything,” she said, sweeping up to her daughter and the two immediately embraced. They both closed their eyes and inhaled deeply. After a brief moment they shifted and Caridee rested her hands on either side of her mother’s face, and Eela’s came to rest on top of Caridee’s, their foreheads touching. The two shared their inaudible thoughts with a flurry of emotions until Eela pulled back, forcing back tears. “All right?”

Caridee nodded and slipped into a grin. “Yes, ma’am,” she deadpanned.

“Oh! I see how it is,” Eela replied as she shook her head and side stepped to Kian. Children!

“I warned them,” Elema said, taking in the exchange with amusement.

“Good luck with that. They’ve been on a ship for a month with a baby for the first time. It does thing to you,” Eela retorted.

“You look well, Eela,” Kian said, embracing her.

Eela gave his hand a squeeze as she pulled back. “All things considered. Don’t forget that addendum,” she said with a laugh.

Turning she beamed at Kenzo and gestured to him. “And it is my pleasure to introduce you both to our Governor and my friend, Kenzo B’tren- Hyrushi. Kenzo, my daughter Caridee Sevren and her husband Kian. And somewhere around here is a baby named Alais.”

“In here living up to her grandmother’s nickname,” Cort said from within the office, radiating amusement and joy.

Caridee stepped forward to Kenzo and offered her hand and a warm smile. “It’s so good to finally meet you.”
