Karina gave them a smile, “Ambassador Mathis, it is a pleasure to meet you. Governor Hyrushi. Thank you both for coming. The children are very excited and nervous about it. If you will have a seat, the children will get started.” She led them to seats in front of the stage. She handed them each a PaDD with the I formation that was forwarded to the Vren, but the children’s names added as well. Romulan, Human, Betazoid, El-Aurian, Klingon, Cardassian, Haliian, Vulcan, Farengi, Deltan, Bajoran, Andorian, Telluride, and Catian were all represented.

“Alright, Max! You may begin.” There was a commotion to the sides of the stage and then all but two of the children appeared, filling spaces along the stage and steps. Then a little girl, around 7 or 8 appeared.

The performance ended with all the children facing their audience and welcoming them.

Enger, DOE

Jeanette couldn’t help but smile at not only their enthusiasm, but their diligent renderings of the welcome. They had clearly worked hard on the performance. She clapped. “Well done!” she said. “I think it’s lovely.

Ambassador Mathis

Hyrushi applauded reservedly, but did incline his head towards the children. “A most excellent presentation. All of you have done a tremendous amount of work in a short time, and you have created something truly marvelous. Well done indeed. I am sure the Vren- indeed the whole colony- will appreciate your presentation. Bravo.”

Hyrushi, Governor

Karina smiled at the children clapping softly. “You have all done exceptionally well.”

Max stepped forward, “Thank you Ambassador Mathis, Governor Hyrushi. We thought we could give the performance on the steps of the museum. That way everyone will be able to have a decent view.” He looked back at the other kids and then back. “We also wanted to know if we would be allowed to stay for part of the Gala. We know that is ultimately up to our parents, but we don’t want people to think this is just a shallow token.”

Enger

Kenzo thought for a moment and then said “I believe having you stay for the gala would be a good idea. Yes. You and your parents will all be invited.” He looked at Enger and said “Please coordinate background checks and medical screenings for all that are coming with my office.” He looked back at Max and said “Go tell your fellow performers that they all can come if their parents come with them.”

Hyrushi, Governor

Max tried not to smile too hugely. He gave Hyrushi a respectful bow (maybe not quite right, a little deeper than required, but the effort was clear) and then hurried off stage.

“I sent all their names to Ms Fen yesterday, just incase. We have a nurse practioner from Sacred Heart on site. I have contacted her, and she will get the health screenings done today. I will send then as soon as they are complete.” Karina tapped away at the PaDD she was holding, and then looked up.

After the children dispersed, Jeanette turned to Kenzo and smiled. “I do love the idea of the children being there. It’ll make everything just that little bit lighter. Goodness knows I’ve attending enough stuffy functions that I’m happy we’re finding ways to make ours less so.”

“Indeed. Some much needed frivolity may make the evening slightly less… worrisome.” Hyrushi said.

“I think you will be surprised at how ‘stuffy’ the children might act. They are very serious about making a good impression and representing Oed well.”

Enger, DOE

Mathis shook her head. “It’s not so much their actions, but their energy. They bring excitement and others things that can be sometimes lacking from these sorts of events. Though I do think this one on the whole will be rather different than many I’ve attended.” It was hard to explain, but after so many years of doing this work, Mathis had the ability to sense the undercurrent of a diplomatic situation and it helped inform her approach

“Agreed. This one will be studied by the Diplomatic Corps, for certain.” Hyrushi said, and then looked at Enger. “If all goes well, perhaps some of your students will one day be teaching those studies.”

Hyrushi, Governor

Enger chuckled. “Watch out for Max. He is a freshman this year, and this was all his idea. He gathered the students, made a plan, sent you the proposal. He is their leader. Don’t be surprised if either of you get a request from him for an internship.”

Enger, DOE

“I’d welcome the request,” Jeanette said with a warm smile. All in all she was feeling positive about everything, if cautious. Now o Lt if she could solidify her speech!

“Is there anything else we need to cover while we’re here?”

Karina glanced at her PaDD. “I only need to know what time to have the students arrive and where security will want us to enter and wait. Other than that, I have nothing else.”

At that moment all the students filed back out onto the stage. Max waited politely for them to finish. “Governor Hyrushi, Ambassador Mathis we all wanted to thank you both for coming to our rehearsal and for allowing us to help in representing our home.”

Jeannette smiled warmly at them. “And thank you for all your hard work. We can tell you all put a great deal of thought and practice into this greeting. I am sure our guests will appreciate it very much.”

Karina stood and offered her hand to them both. “If there is nothing else, I will not keep you. I can only imagine how much work is still left to do.”

Mathis gave a gracious nod. “I appreciate all the hard work you’ve put into this, Director. It’s much appreciated and yours and the children’s efforts will go a long way towards making this gala special for our guests.”
