Hannah nodded in understanding. She had her own personal experiences with prosthetics and multiple surgeries. “It is a huge decision, and one you should take the time to fully consider. There is no time limit on this.” Hannah gathered her thoughts, “First and foremost, keep up with your physical therapy. I see you’ve greatly improved the compression that you presented with when you first arrived. It is important to keep working on that. Any compression or swelling can increase the risk of damage. You are up to date on your immunizations, but with all the refugees coming in, we are always updating that list. Any boosters you might need would need to be given 6 weeks before surgery.”

She nodded. It made sense. “Well, that’s relatively easy. I’ve got enough people on my team that I’m sure if one comes up that I need to get taken care, it’ll get mentioned. Nothing Hannah had said so far was a surprise or out of the ordinary in terms of risks, benefits and considerations. And a part of her also understood that had she been given this option earlier she would have jumped at it without hesitation, but not been ready for it. Now she could look at her options with a measure of understanding and realism.
Eela tapped her fingers on the table and blew out a breath. “I have lingering issues from my brain injury that affects my motion. Specifically, I get vertigo when I move my head and or body too quickly in any one direction. My spatial awareness isn’t what it used to be. Now, I know a part of it is that my nervous system doesn’t always communicate as well as it should. Given the surgery and the fact that we’d be rewiring the nerves again anyway, do you think my spatial awareness would improve, even if we had to do specific training for it?”

Hannah pulled up Dasca’s imaging and scans and looked at it a long moment. “The only thing I can say is possibly. Relieving the pressure and allowing you more movement might help. That isn’t my area of expertise. You would need to consult a neurologist for that. I can ask Dr C’tain to look and see what he thinks.”

Eela gave a tiny nod. In a way she was glad Asimina couldn’t give her a definitive yes right now. Her emotions and mental state in this moment were not conducive to making good long-term decisions, which is why she have vocalized the need to wait awhile. They had time to figure this out. Still… the reality was that the possibility the hope of it all was powerful. She sucked in a breath. “I used to dance,” she said softly. “I still can with mindfulness, and I’ve proven that recently, but… it’s not quite the same as losing yourself in the music and the freedom of it. If I could reclaim even a little of that…” She shook her head, her gaze drifting off to a spot on the wall.

Hannah allowed her a moment, and then said gently. “This,” she tapped the prosthetic, “will give you back the ability to move. As car as the vertigo and any lingering nerve damage, I can’t say.”

Returning her gaze to Hannah, Eela nodded. “I’m a generally optimistic person, but I do know to ground all this in reality. I think this will be a situation where I do better to be pleasantly surprised. I think the first goal of not having the pain issues is the most important and will do the most for my quality of life. Just being able to go about my job with less hindrances will be a big improvement.”
She smiled. “Thank you Doctor Asimina, for being honest and realistic. I have a thought to think about and will probably need to talk it out with some trusted people before I make a decision either way.” A part of her knew she had already decided, but that was the problem. She needed someone to double-check her perspective and make sure she wasn’t missing important pieces of the picture.
