“As I am pleased to make yours.” Relieved at the welcome she did take his hand and did almost instantly feel a surge of peace. She squinted her eyes as she looked around and a smile formed on her face. “Strange.” She said out loud, “I just got the most tranquil and harmonious feeling.” Of course she wasn’t aware it was due to Akems pheromones and took it as a good sign that she was right to take on this case herself.

Meanwhile, Lai took a seat on their little sofa, but there was an armchair and an ottoman in addition to dining chairs. She watched Akem interact with Oshiro and took slow and deep breaths to steady herself. She was still trying to figure out what their lives would look like now and it was honestly overwhelming.

“So I see you have only been on Oed for a short time.” She said as she took a seat on the ottoman. “What do you think of the colony so far. Are you planning to stay? If so I’d like to know how I can help you build a long term future here.”

As Samikah prepared to leave, she paused and took a quick look at Lai. Yes. I am sure that is the same energy I felt in the Golden Klaxut market the other day.
However, she didn’t say anything or bring it up, but instead, she said to Aiofemi, “I hope your visit goes well. I would not overthink things too much. Just be yourself.” She gave Aiofemi a pat on the shoulder. Then she looked at Lai and Akem. “I am afraid I cannot stay. My boss keeps me very busy and I have a lot to do before the end of the day. It was nice to meet you both.” With that, she headed to the door and exited the apartment.

Akem gave her a slow nod as he watched her leave. Akem turned his attention back to Lai and Oshiro. Akem spoke up briefly. “We hadn’t discussed it much. But I’m obviously open to your thoughts.” He moved to Lai as he spoke and sat down next to her, his hand intertwining with hers as his mind sought to provide her some sense of calm.

His touch and their connection did indeed bring her some peace and Lai gazed at Akem for a moment before she focused on Aiofemi. “The colony seems interesting, what little we’ve seen, and we are trying to figure out our options given… the unusual circumstances of our arrival. We have no formal IDs, no history here that people can verify. The fact that we are genetically identical to people that have interacted on this colony in the past makes it tricky for us. We can only be who we are, but we aren’t supposed to be here. Except I know Akem and I share this one feeling and that is if we were even somehow able to go back to where we come from our lives are forfeit. They found us once, they will find us again and then we will die. I had accepted that fate back on that way station, but now that we are here? I can only speak for myself and say that I’m not interested in being shot again.” Maybe that was more than Lai might normally be inclined to say but what choice did they have here?

Aiofemi clasped and listened to Lai speak. After she was done, Aiofemi had many questions. She began to understand the couple’s initial apprehension. They had been through a lot and it seems they had also encountered some life-threatening situations along the way. She clasped her hands together and said, “There is very vague information on your arrival. Naturally, I am curious about what you mean when you say the unusual circumstances of your arrival. If you won’t mind and so I can understand your situation a bit better, can you tell me who are you running from…who shot you and how you arrived on Oed?”

Lai tensed and she looked at Akem. She doesn’t know. How was that possible? She was so used to everyone trading information like it was currency and their situation was worth plenty. Surely someone had said something already. She got up from the couch and moved to the door to their little balcony and stared out over the colony, trying to calm her heart rate.

“The Amagray, or Death-Bringers,” Lai said softly. “They will sell Akem to highest bidder, of whom there will be many options, and for me? They cannot control me, so I am worthless to them.” There was an edge to her voice, an anger that rarely surfaced.

Ai’s face turned to confusion as she listened. “The Amagray? They are the ones who are after you?”

Akem stayed in his seat as his mind remained close to Lai. He added, “I have been protecting her from these people since we met. Common enemies gave a closeness that led into the most beautiful thing I’ve experienced.” His eyes stayed on her as his mind raced through the plethora of memories they shared.

As Akem spoke Ai looked at him then nodded, “Lai, Akem. I’d like to know more about the Amagray…Death-Bringers. The more I know the better I can put things in place to protect you both while you here on Oed. Where are they from? Do you know if they know you are here?” There were so many questions and she needed so much information. “You will need to trust me and tell me everything.”
