Sharah nodded, “I’m aware Eela. That is why I said I don’t know who is lucky.” Sharah may not have the years of experience Eela did, but the ones she had…were powerful and potent. Sharah thought it was poor planning if clothing could offend that it wasn’t a topic discussed before meeting. If it was such an insignificant question as to not needing to be asked, then why worry about it. Not her problem though. “I wouldn’t know about Ambassador Mathis. I have only seen her from the press conference. She was very....diplomatic. I understand Dr Asimina met her briefly here in the market last week though.”

Sharah

“Oh good!” Eela said. “I’m glad they’re getting out more. It’s always a challenge getting settled somewhere new, especially when you have a teenager in tow. But yes, Mathis is very much what you expect of a diplomat: calm, observant, careful with her words and thoughts.” She thought back to the moment the other day when she had been trying to work herself up to walking past the press and entering the Tower for the first time after Cory. “But at the same time, there are depths to that woman that I hope we’ll get to see more of the longer she’s here. And her spouse, Ren, is delightful. They seems to balance her quite nicely.”

Sharah shrugged. “I will have to reserve judgement until I have met her. I just hope she is here to protect Oed. The Federation only sent her here because of the Vren, and her loyalty and oaths are to them, n6it a single colony. If Oed is lucky, she will come to value this place as more than just an assignment.”

Sharah

She smiled. “Don’t underestimate her yet. Mathis has been running embassies for years at a time. She’s used to working with and through the systems around her. But these next weeks will be very telling. It’s one thing to deal with everything from a distance. It’s quite another when we’re all face-to-face with the Vren.”

Sharah shrugged. “As I said, I will reserve judgement. In the end though my opinion doesn’t matter either way. I follow orders, not voice opinions.” Sharah could feel and hear snippets in the noise over the last weeks and it was growing. The people didn’t trust Mathis. They also didn’t really distrust her. She wasn’t one of them. She hadn’t lived, breathed, played, worked here like they had. She was an unknown and a stranger. Sent here for the Federations needs with the Vren, not for Oed. Some wondered how much longer the Federation would have left Oed withoutbofficial diplomats. They were on the edge of Federation territory after all. It should have been done before, but again they felt Oed was ignored until useful. But the governor was working with Mathis, and that carried weight for them because they trusted him. Some trusted her. Some were indifferent. It was difficult for Sharah to be in the midst and stay detached.

Sharah

Eela gave her something of an amused expression. “Oh, I think we disagree there. Your opinion does matter. You wield a lot more influence than I think you know, Sharah. You are, after all, helping run a hospital and are a senior Starfleet staff member. Given the large contingent present, that’s not a small role.”
