Sharah’s eyebrows raised. “None at all. If your behavior, emotional or physical was a problem a background check would show that. The medical check is to insure that you have no diseases or infections you might give to the babies. And as for possible physical limitations from the brain injury or your back, they would just ask that if you feel you are having a bad day and can’t hold the babies, you tell them. You can always sing or read to them, hold their tiny hands.”

A smile slipped onto her face. “Jourin was so tiny when he was born. It felt impossible that he could be alive and surviving while that small. The Berlin was a Steamrunner-class and while a state-of-the-art ship for its time, still only had a crew-complement of 200. The Sickbay was great, but not really designed for premie babies. But they set up a space for us in a private room so I could be with him too. Some days, just touching him seemed to be a frightening prospect, but he was so strong for something so tiny. He amazed me on a daily basis, even when I was scared for him.”

Sharah nodded, “I hear that a lot, and I am glad that it was also so for you and Jourin. It always…rocks me to see the strength in something so tiny. To have no point of reference of what life is, what it should be, but to fight and win to stay with us. It fills me with Hope, Eela. That despite the conflicts, the problems, and adversity, someone so tiny and fragile knows that life is worth holding on to.”

The memory stirred emotions in Eela that she didn’t often let herself go back to, mostly because it had been a difficult time. She pushed them back slightly, though held onto the thread that she was looking for. “He kept me going. It was a rough time, and his early birth was only a part of it. But when everything else felt impossible, I could sit there with him and focus on us getting through. I could focus on him and Caridee, who was five at the time. They were my light,” she said with a beaming smile. As difficult as that time had been, it also had been an extraordinary gift. She could see that now after all these years, and knowing how it would prompt wonderful changes in her life. The rest? Well, like anything in life, there was bed with the good. It just was.

“I am very glad that you had each other, Eela. That you had excellent doctors with you, to make sure you were both taken care of and healthy.” Sharah looked around the market. “What are you in search of today?”

Sharah

“Nothing specific. I’ve gotten to know many of the vendors and so I like to just see what they think is interesting. Mostly I just wanted to get out and enjoy the morning before everything tonight. Steeling myself, as it were,” Eela said with a grin. “I know you’re waiting for Jal’na, but did you want to keep browsing?”

~Eela

“I can if you are so inclined. At this point I am not sure that Jal’na will be here. I will comm her in a bit and see if I can pick up what she needed. I have to pass the embassy on my way anyway.” Truthfully, Sharah was taking the time to steel herself as well, but in a different way. She was listening to the tides and storms, getting a feel for how to ride out the waves. There was no solid solution for how to manage the event for her and she could not avoid it. She cursed Rende for getting her this position, but at the same time, most days, she wouldn’t change a thing.
