“That’s wonderful Eela. I am glad that you got to experience that with her.” Sharah wondered about that. How people made the choices they did of who attended the birth and who did not. Charles and Yavia had mentioned children. Would Yavia want her grandmother there? Would she want Charles’ mother there, would she be comfortable with that? Certainly not herself. Sharah wasn’t an obstetrician and she would want Yavia to have the best doctor. Besides, it had nothing to do with her, that was between them. Ah well, it wasn’t like her parents were going to have grandchildren through her anyway. If they did, it would be when Andrew decided to settle down. Sharah grinned, “Babies are wonderful. They remind us of the joy of life, watching them experience everything we take for granted, as new and wondrous.”

She nodded. “Yes. There is also just that pure energy that is hard to describe to someone who isn’t psi-positive. It’s why I think I really will see about spending a little time at the hospital with the babies. I think there is something healing about that innocence and their relatively simple needs that could be quite healing. It’s like the more chaotic my life becomes, the more I need to double-down on finding time to be still and quiet, to listen to my own internal voice. Given how much it’s been drowned out over the years, it’s proving to be something of a challenge.”

Sharah nodded, “It is important to know what is you and what is everyone else. Especially when things are intense. Whether that intensity is happy or sad. Otherwise we can lose ourselves to it. But visiting the babies is always a volunteer opportunity. They don’t judge and they need the contact. It is a but if a process to go through to be approved, but Jal’na swears it is worth the reward.” Sharah chuckled. The tough mean head PT caught all kinds of ribbing for her time with the infants, but she didn’t seem to mind.

Eela smiled. She was pretty sure she could pass a background check, but that didn’t mean there wouldn’t be hoops to jump through. “What exactly is the process?” she asked. Better to know in advance. Besides, if it was going to take time, she wanted to get on it sooner rather than later.

“Hmm I am not sure the exact order, but there is a background check, medical evaluation and history, you have to pass an infant first aid and CPR class. I know they will ask you a lot of questions about your personal experiences with babies. And of course the parents have the final say so in choosing volunteers. And then special cases might require further ‘training’ or checks.” Sharah tapped her fingers on her knee. “Jal’na would know. Ilena volunteers as well. Patrick Julang is the coordinator. Yavia probably knows the procedures, but she’s not allowed.”

The first aid seemed overkill in a hospital given they weren’t actually taking the infants anywhere, but Eela couldn’t disagree that it was good knowledge to have. She had brushed up on hers once Caridee was closer to her due date, but she’d have to see if hers was recent enough or not. Eela also thought she knew why Yavia couldn’t participate but again that seemed counter-intuitive, but she didn’t know whether it was okay to ask about it since it really wasn’t any of her business.

The medical side of things made her frown though, and might actually be the thing that made her a bad candidate. Not so much her back but her brain. She wouldn’t blame them. “I suppose I’ve gotten used to more people knowing my medical business, and I know they are discreet. How much of a problem do you think it will be? The brain injury part, I mean.” She wanted to be realistic about the likelihood, though she remembered Jourin as that impossibly tiny baby and knew she had something to offer.

Sharah’s eyebrows raised. “None at all. If your behavior, emotional or physical was a problem a background check would show that. The medical check is to insure that you have no diseases or infections you might give to the babies. And as for possible physical limitations from the brain injury or your back, they would just ask that if you feel you are having a bad day and can’t hold the babies, you tell them. You can always sing or read to them, hold their tiny hands.”
