Kenzo nodded in understanding and said “Reality is a fickle mistress.” and took a drink. He looked at the menu and then said “I am glad that happiness has found you, Eela. I sincerely believe that you one of the most deserving of it. I am hesitantly hopeful that that positivity will carry through to the Vren’s arrival… which is what? Ten seconds away?” he joked dryly.

Kenzo

She shook her head. “I feel like I’ve at least had a chance to catch my breath. Can you imagine if they had been arriving the day after Cory showed up?” She shuddered slightly. “What a worse nightmare.

A server came by and offered them a couple menus. “Welcome to the Eden Café, Sir, Ma’am. We’re honoured to have you. Our specials today are a parthas and sweet potato tartlet with a spring wine glaze. It comes with a side salad of your choice. We also have an uttaberry crepe, and our soup of the days is roasted tomato and red pepper with without chilli crisps. It comes withe fresh baked bread. Can I get either of you something to drink to start?”

Kenzo shook his head slightly and said “I am fine with water, thank you.” as he took the menu.

“Lemonade for me,” Eela said to the server sho nodded and stepped away.

He looked at the menu and said “Regardless of what is on here, I getting the soup for certain.”

Kenzo

“The soups are supposed to be amazing. Elema put me on to this place. She highly recommended the mushroom risotto, and they even have a kateriak, which is a Haliian layered savoury pie with a really flaky crust.” The menus had a good selection of entree salads and most of the food was lighter fare, but they seemed to focus on quality rather than an abundance of choices in each category.

She had plenty she could talk about, but Kenzo was all too good at shifting the conversation. “Now, back to my question. How are you doing?” she said softly, her hazel eyes gazing intently at her dear friend.

Kenzo set the menu aside and folded his hands on the table. He looked at her for a moment and then sighed slightly. “I am tired. I am frustrated and I am more than a little apprehensive about the next three to five days. I say three to five because I believe that if something horrendous is to happen, that is the time frame I expect it would occur. And lastly…” He looked away for a moment and then shook his head and looked back at Eela. “I find myself drawn to someone that I cannot… will not… pursue. And it is… distressing. But… it shall pass.”

Kenzo

It was no small thing that he had feelings for anyone, especially given their conversation about the topic. She set her own menu down, giving him her full attention. “Perhaps, but that doesn’t mean it’s not extremely difficult.” Despite her ‘arrangement’ with Cory, Eela had experienced unrequited feelings before and it could be painful. Just because there was a connection between people, didn’t mean it evolved into anything more tangible. “Will it pass?” While their table was in a private corner of the café, she was mindful of how she worded things , not so much in concern of someone eavesdropping but more so neither of them were emotionally compromised in public. Fortunately for the both of them, her and Kenzo were excellent at reading between the lines.

He gave her one of his half-smiles and said “It has to. There is no other option, I’m afraid.” He sighed softly and said “Be that as it may, it was… surprising… to discover that emotional range again. And if it happened once, there is no reason to believe that it is an isolated incident.” He took a drink of water and nodded as the waiter returned and took their order.

Eela turned to the server and gave them a smile. “I’ll have the parthas tartlet with the karos salad,” she said.

“Tartlet and soup, please. Thank you very much.” Kenzo said with a slight nod.

She took a sip of the lemonade the server had brought and waited till the server had left before she remarked, “I am sorry that this is something you’re facing, but it’s as you say, sometimes it’s just as helpful to know you can,” Eela said, a tiny smirk touching her lips. He was a lovely man and deserved to have some personal happiness come his way.

Kenzo’s black eyes flashed at her and a slight smile touched his lips as he took a drink. He then said “True.... perhaps you weren’t the only one ‘stuck’, then.” and he chuckled… which was his equivalent of a full laugh.

Kenzo

Her smile was genuine and fuller as she sipped her lemonade again. “Sometimes we don’t know we are until after. But I do think we’re both benefitting greatly from the newfound knowledge.” And indeed how she had herself. While Eela (especially this week) was keeping her eyes off whatever people were gossiping about on the colony, she did know that her date with Dash had definitely had people talking, and there was something so very freeing about not caring one bit what they were saying. She had looked and felt amazing and she wasn’t going to apologize for being so abundantly herself in public. Not anymore. She was well and truly done with that.

“Even if it is slight, I agree.” Kenzo said and then set his glass to the side. Clasping his hands in front of jim and on the table, he said “To business. Where are we on the Embassy build, and have the final preparations for the gala been completed? Tangentially, what have you heard from your side about our letter to the Chamber?”

Hyrushi, Governor
