Closing her eyes, Sharah turned her face up to the sun. What did she need? So now this was suddenly a counseling session? Sharah had never disliked counselors. In fact she liked them in general both professionally and personally. Here lately though she was getting tired of them. She had a counselor, a couple of them in fact, if she needed more than one. She was heartily tired of everyone trying to be hers. She mentally ran through every conversation she’d had with Korczak over the last weeks. She couldn’t remember them word for word as he could but she remembered the point he was trying to make. Sharah lowered her face and looked at Eela. She spoke slowly, thoughtfully, compassion and understanding for Eela’s needs sounding in her voice. She was very careful not to project anything from herself, but emotion tinged her voice as well. “What I need, Eela, is for you to accept that those 48 hours required boundaries because you did not deserve to have my issues become yours or vice versa. I need you to understand that Tuesday had nothing to do with you. You are still my friend and I care deeply about you. I would do anything to help you.” Sharah really wasn’t comfortable with this at all on so very many levels. “Mostly I need you to understand that I consider this a very private matter and I’m not comfortable discussing it.”
Sharah
A gentle inhale filled her lungs and as it flowed the air took along some of the unease that she had been carrying. The part that had been mixed up and mired in cloudiness left her. Eela simply let it go. So when she went to speak, she gave Sharah a smile of understanding and her words were full of warmth. “Okay,” she said. It was as simple as that. When there was a lack of clarity about a moment or event in her life, yes, Eela could dwell until she worked it out, but when there was clarity? It was done. It hadn’t always been that way, but it was a skill she had built and practised over and over again through her life.
Sharah was grateful that Eela accepted that. She understood the confusion and uncertainty Tuesday morning caused, she did, but though they coincided and overlapped slightly they were only connected by timing, coincidence. And Sharah just was not, and she wasn’t sure she ever would be, ready to discuss it.
Gazing out over the market, for a moment she watched the people going about their lives as they frequented the stalls. Such a simple and beautiful thing. “It’s strange to watch everyone and know that on a scale of only hours, Oed will have a such a historical moment, and we get to be a part of it. So much will change, and yet, a whole lot will just carry one as it always has. I do love that.”

Shatah nodded, remembering the Viking and the Ark Angel. “Some will be aware, but it will never affect them. Others will be aware of the changes in thr colony and it will affect them minimally. And others like yourself and Givernor Hyrushi it will be major changes. And others…others will changed forever. In ways you can’t imagine.” Her gaze turned very very far away. Memories, emotions, a life that wasn’t hers but her burden to carry.
“I am excited Eela. I really am. I am a very minor player in this, but I can’t wait to meet them.”
Sharah
She grinned and that familiar delight ran through her as she turned her gaze on Sharah. “I’m not going to say diplomatic work is fun or ever easy, but on the days where there is potential and something to look forward to, it’s nothing short of thrilling. If you do nothing else tonight, step back every now and again and just take it all in. See the whole of it, the possibility. The negotiations, the issues that need to be tackled, they will be for another day. But tonight? It’s about learning, and exchange, and challenging our assumptions. And that is a remarkable thing.” Of all her work with the Diplomatic Corps, she’d had plenty of events like this, but the ones that came with such high stakes behind the interactions? Those were rare, and special.

“I know.” This wasn’t her first time in a type of first contact situation. The irony of Eela’s advice was that Sharah didn’t have a choice but to experience it all. The socialization as well as the plotting and calculating and information gathering that would be going on. Sharah had seriously considered wearing the headband, but she hadn’t had time to adjust it, tinker and tweak it. Sharah knew what to expect with the noise, usually, but she didn’t know what to expect with the band. And getting it on was still a bit of an ordeal.
“How are you feeling about tonight? Are you optimistic?”
Sharah
Eela nodded slowly. “It’s easy to be optimistic about the gala. For the most part we’re all going to be putting our best foot forward and while there will be nuances that we gain from being in each other’s presence for the first time, for the most part we’ve done the initial work establishing the stakes for both sides. So we know all that. The real work comes after tonight, when we’re sitting around a negotiating table. That’s the part that’s harder to know. How much can each side flex and compromise. We don’t know until we start to work through everything what this situation actually looks like.” She blew out a breath. “Those are the days that will make or break everything.” As someone who would be sitting at that table, and had been before, she understood what they were up against and what the consequences were for everyone. No pressure!
