She really didn’t have the time for this, but that was precisely why Eela knew it was absolutely necessary. This whirlwind of a week had been so up and down emotionally that she knew she needed to steady herself before the gala. While it was a social event and that in of itself could be pleasant, her and everyone else would be working. It was a diplomatic event, after all. They may not be talking about the work, but every exchange would be building the rapport that they would bring to the negotiating table. It was vital they got this right, for everyone’s sake.

Wandering the stalls in a loose light purple sleeveless sweater dress and cropped leggings, Eela approached one of the booths that carried spices and herbs from across the galaxy. She smiled with an ease that had settled over her in her quiet moments since her date with Dash. Ease. Not something she was used to, all told, but she welcomed it and allowed that feeling to permeate her being. “Good morning, Livsal. Anything interesting today?”

The Brenerite grinned, which always looked a bit comical on their wide, scaled skin. “Indeed I do, Madame! Are you up for something spicy or sweet?”
She grinned. “Oh, I can handle some spice.”
Livsal poured a tiny amount of a dark green granulated powder onto a glass dish and handed it to her. “Put a little on your tongue and let it sit for a moment.”

Eela touched her fingertip to her tongue, then the powder, and then her tongue again. Her eyes popped wider and she let out a startled laugh. “Wow! Okay…” For a moment she wasn’t sure what to say as the taste continued to morph on her palate. It started out earthy, then hit with a subtle heat before becoming tart. Now it was settling into something warm that wasn’t about actual heat. It was hard to describe.

Livsal chuckled. “Perfect! I was hoping you’d like that. Intriguing, yes?”
“Definitely!” she said. “What’s it called?”
“Um’bral, from Kessik IV.”
“I definitely want a couple of jars. I have a friend who would be fascinated by it,” Eela said, already planning to give one to Kenzo. While the spice merchant went to wrap her jars, Eela felt a familiar ping on her senses. Sharah. She was somewhere here, but as she looked around Eela didn’t see her immediately.

Sharah was wandering the edges of the market. She loved the market and the people and all the different things that were for sale. Sharah was supposed to meet Jal’na today. Jal’na wanted to come find yarn. It always amused Sharah to watch Jal’na pick out and sample the soft delicate strands. It was such a contrast with the woman who was so strict and unwavering in her approach to medicine. She was the immovable object and the unstoppable one as well. Jal’na hadn’t arrived yet, and Sharah was sure it was something to do with all her new duties. Jal’na was happy though, and Sharah had nowhere else to be, no one else that wanted her company at the moment. So she wandered about, in a half meditative state, trying to find a way to be still in it all.

Eela paid for the um’bral and moved along, thinking about what she might like to make over the week and which stalls would give her the flavours she was feeling. Assuming things with the Vren went well, she was thinking she’d like to cook again for Dash. Surely they could fit in at least dinner again this week. The thought made her smile.

Moving around the corner, she spied Sharah and her smile deepened and shifted. But the doctor seemed elsewhere and mindful of their last interaction, Eela did her best to pull her emotions back without removing herself entirely. She’d be ‘present’ and hope it was not too much. Honestly, unless Sharah explained it more clearly, she wasn’t sure what was or wasn’t okay, but she had no desire to cause the woman any pain or overwhelm.

There was a crystal clear ping on her awareness. Someone’s attention had turned to her in a specific way. Not just a stranger noticing and moving around her, but a focus born of familiarity. Recognizing the presence, Sharah paused and looked around for Eela. Spotting her Sharah waved and waited to see if she wanted to speak with her or was just thinking.

With a smile, Eela moved along the stalls. She didn’t rush, but her movements were purposeful. “Good morning, Sharah. I see we had a similar idea. I’m hoping a little meandering now will pay off later at the gala.” Goodness knew they could use all the help they could get to make everything run smoothly.

~Eela

“Good morning Eela. I am usually here most weeks. Unless I am working. I was supposed to meet Jal’na, but she has been delayed.” Sharah glanced around, “The market gives a sense of identity and mutual purpose for the people. It’s very beautiful.” Sharah turned so she was moving in the direction Eela had been going. “I am excited for the Gala. I think it will go very well. It is hard to forget, forgive, and ket go of the past and our assumptions. But we are not in the past and these are not the same individuals. We cannot judge all similar people by the actions of those that are similar to them. At least, I cannot make them pay for others’ sins.” Oh how well Sharah understood that position.

Sharah

“Indeed,” she said softly. “And I’ve had the good fortune to talk to their Ambassador. I have to admit he makes me smile. Such enthusiasm! I look forward to meeting him in person.” Eela paused at a stall looking over some of the produce. The eggplant looked particularly nice and would make a lovely stew. “Are you looking for anything in particular today?”

~Eela

Sharah smiled slightly, “You’re impression of him is amusing. I am excited to meet them. Finally a benefit to being a department head.” Sharah looked around, “No not really. I just enjoy seeing what is on offer. Yavia and Charles do the grocery shopping. I don’t cook, but they both really enjoy it. What about you?”
