Hannah shrugged, “I hate to stay idle. I like to move, but I’m having to be more careful than normal. Swimming seemed a good compromise.”

“It’s a great workout for sure. As easy or as hard as you need it to be. It was my gateway into sports. My grandmother always said I was a fish as a kid.” Cort grinned. “When I was really little, I’d pretend I was swimming an ocean even though I was in the bath tub.” There was something freeing about being in the water that for him was unmatched by anything else. He knew others felt the same way about being in space, but he was a colony boy and preferred his firmly on the ground. Or in the water.

“My mother loves the water. She taught me to swim in the ocean. I guess it was really a great lake before she let me near the ocean. We didn’t have swimming pools where I grew up. I love being outside, in nature, but there is something…more,” she made a gesture with her hands, “about the water. So what will you do? Do you think you can increase your time before the super sprint?”

Belanger nodded slowly. “Most likely. I have three months to work on it, and I often find that once I’m training on the bike and doing the longer distance running, then it tends to improve my swim time a little. It’s just building up that bit of endurance again that I’ve lost. The rest is the conditioning I have to do in other areas.” It could be overwhelming for someone new to the sport, but he’d been doing triathlons off and on long enough that it didn’t faze him much anymore.

He took another swig and looked up at the large wall clock. “I should try one more set today, though I’m not expecting to improve my time. I’ve forgotten how much more energy it takes to race,” he said with a chuckle.
