The Nurses Come to Visit

Posted by Civilian Yavia Crockett (Nurse - Sacred Heart Hospital) in The Nurses Come to Visit
The morning had started on a high note, literally. Charles had woken them with the most amazing song. The lyrics were hilarious and potent and fun. But Charles acting out the lyrics and dancing down the hall was the most amazing thing Yavia had ever seen. She was so in love with him, and loved the fun and spontaneity he brought to their lives. The morning had been harder for Sharah, but overall the morning had been much better than the previous one.

The day promised to be crazy with an intense but short shift at the hospital and ending with the celebration Jal’na had invited them all to. Which, until the auction, no one knew why. Shrine had arranged to have all the shifts covered by those that didn’t really know Jal’na so the rest of them could go. Helaky and Sharah were happy to approve all the shift changes.

They were all 45 minutes late from leaving. Yavia had called for a car and Temple drove her as well, and they all piled in making back for the house. The cars pulled around the back of the house and they all piled out, almost like a clown car and climbed the stone steps. “Come on inside,” Yavia opened the door waving them all in, with their various bags so they could get ready. The group was quieter as they glanced around the large open area. “Go on have a seat, I’ll grab the food.” Yavia shooed Sharah into the living area along with everyone else and moved on into the kitchen.

Jessie glanced around, “So…you both live here? I mean we know you all were here the other night, but it’s ‘official’?”

Shrine cackled, “Oh come on ladies. We all knew that first night this was serious and gonna end up this way with the General and Yavia.” Elaine reached over and nabbed a chip from the bowl Yavia set down. “The next day was horrible. Yavia was worthless. I think I found her just standing around daydreaming five times. She said we were distracting her, teasing her that he was there every time the door opened. She was just standing at the nurses desk with this goofy grin on her face staring at the wall.”

Ilena laughed as Yavia flushed red and shrugged. She was not ashamed to admit she daydreamed about TK. Temple shook a finger, “Oh and you know it’s official because it’s worse now. Every time Sharah walks by Yavia forgets what she’s saying.”

“I do NOT.” The nurses roared with laughter.

Ilena looked at Temple, “Well there is that, but Sharah doesn’t even have quarters on the complex anymore. When she’s on call she stays with me or on a biobed.” Ilena grinned at Sharah, “But Yavia isn’t the only one who gets distracted.”

Sharah got up, still working out some of the jittery giddiness from earlier, so she more readily, if not easily, engaged with the banter. She grabbed a tray from the counter and carried it over to the coffee table. She smirked, “I don’t know what you are talking about, Ilena.” Ilena tapped the side of her head with a huge grin, “Oh yes you do. They can’t hear your thoughts derail, but I can.” The shade of red on Sharah’s face sent them all into fits of giggles. Elaine slid right off the chair, Temple and Shrine were crying leaning against each other, and Jessie spit her drink out.

Yavia walked over and set the last tray on the table and then slipped an arm around Sharah’s waist. Her eyes sparked and her grin was wholly satisfied, “Do I make you forget how to think, Sharah?” There was obviously a very private conversation going on there and Ilena snickered. “Yavia stop it!” Sharah was looking anywhere but at the people in the room. Yavia chuckled softly and kissed her just behind and below her ear. “Never.” She let go of Sharah, “Eat up.” She grabbed a plate and then a seat.

They were all quiet for awhile and then Jessie spoke up, “Something feels off.”

Yavia nodded and took a sip of her drink. “We’re missing Jal’na. Just seems wrong without her.” Shrine nodded, “It does. We’ve created our own little family, but she’s busy with her new one today.” She gave Yavia a firm but loving look, “Just like you and Sharah did.”

“I just can’t figure out what happened. If you had seen the two of them in ICU. If there hadn’t been a patient in that room, I swear Jal’na might have tried to kill him,” Elaine remembered it quite clearly. She’d gone straight to Shrine, and Shrine had laughed and berated both her and Jal’na (later) about not paying attention and just assuming. Shrine cackled, “She might have wanted to do something to him. I don’t think it was mortally injure him.”

Elaine threw her napkin at the older woman, “I’m not talking about that. Seriously, Jal’na even called the CCDA and when they wouldn’t move him I thought she might snap. I’ve never seen her so mad.” Sharah grinned, but was absolutely certain Shrine was right. It was the whole reason Jal’na had invited her to go see the embassy garden with her. Jessie shook her head, “I didn’t think Jal’na dated, at all.”

Sharah smiled, “Sometimes it’s like that. You aren’t looking and then suddenly you find the part of yourself you didn’t know was missing.” Ilena grinned at Yavia and held her hand out to Sharah. Sharah didn’t take it, and that was okay, but she did hold her hand over Ilena’s for a moment.

Temple set her plate down, “Well he is certainly smitten with her. I will never forget him screaming Jal’na was his wife, across the entire auction and Jal’na calm as can be telling Shrine to close the bidding before he actually got mad. I have never laughed so hard in my life. My husband thought he’d have to call for help because I couldn’t breath.”

“Speaking of surprises,” Sharah looked at Ilena, “who were those two men fighting over you?” Ilena turned red but shrugged, “No idea. Well I know one of them of course, but I had no idea…”

“You weren’t paying attention, Ilena. It’s been obvious to the rest of us,” Yavia chuckled. Ilena looked sheepish, “Well....I…I know now.” Everyone chuckled, “But no idea who the other one was. I tried to find him to thank him, but he disappeared.” He had felt familiar, but Ilena just couldn’t place where she might know him from. They talked for awhile, speculating on their dates from the auction and the plans for the funds they had raised.

“We should get ready. We’ll want to leave in enough time to be there before Jal’na and her husband arrive.” Yavia stood and with everyone’s help they cleared away the food and dishes. “There are six bedrooms just down the stairs, either side. Pick one, they all have a bathroom.” Curiosity got the better of Jessie, “Where do you sleep, Yavia?” The Deltan raised her brows, “Room straight back at the end of the hall.”

“Where does Sharah sleep?” Sharah’s eyes went wide and she gave Yavia a look of ‘what?’ Yavia looked at Jessie, “Room straight back at the end of the hall.” While Jessie nodded, Elaine grinned, “And where does he sleep?” Yavia gave a bored sigh, “Room straight back at. the. end. of. the. hall.”

They all kind of looked at her a moment, “Oh..OH!!!” “So is there a schedule?” “Do you guys rotate in on specific days?” “What if you want to be alone?” “How big is the bed? Cause I like my space.” “”So do you all just.. you know…? INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW, D@MMIT.”

Sharah thought she would die of embarrassment as their thoughts ran rampant with curiosity. Yavia gave them all a good long glare that had no effect at all. “The answer to all of that is NUNYA. Now scoot! We have a wedding to go to. Geeze get your minds out of the gutter.”

Yavia and the nurses

There was the soft clearing of a distinctly male voice. Major General Charles Tenkiller was leaning against the dividing wall between den and kitchen. He had an amused smile on his face and he looked at Jessie. “If the logistics confuse you, ladies… we can always show you the home vids. You know… as a visual aide. A picture is worth a thousand words, after all…” and he chuckled and turned and walked away.

There was dead silence. Nothing. And then the nurses erupted in laughter, gasps, mcok hot flashes and every question possible going rapid fire at Sharah and Yavia.
