Dorma stared hard at him for a very long, uncomfortable moment…

And then she grinned.

“I know.” she said with a slight laugh. “And I know it was Hyrushi’s idea. And I am not mad, nor have I been mad. You should know something about Governor Hyrushi… he knows everyone in that tower. Even if they don’t know him. He knew you and your team were unhappy. And he knew that Captain Dasca’s arrival had changed a lot of that. And he knew that you, me, Elma… even San’nt in Colonial Relations… were just about at our wits end.” She smiled at him and said “But he knew you were the most stressed. And he values your presence in the Lieutenant Governor’s office. He respects your abilities a great deal. Elma as well. So… he decided to distract you. Give you something else to fixate on outside of the Vren and the ten million other things you and I deal with on the daily. And don’t be mad or upset with him, Cort… please.” She smiled broadly and said “It may have been a joint idea between me and him. Because I too appreciate what you do. I didn’t know you were thinking of resigning… but I hope you don’t. We are stronger with you than without you.”

He stared at her like she had suddenly grown another head. And then he threw back his head and laughed with his whole body. And yes he was laughing a bit at himself too.

Inside, Dorma felt a wave of relief. She hadn’t been sure that Kenzo was right in setting Cort up like that, but she was glad he saw the intention and humor.

Cort got a hold of himself, shook his head, and held out a hand to her. “Well played.”

“I will convey your sentiment to the Governor.” she said with a chuckle.

“And no worries about the resignation. I deleted it after Eela made that statement to the press with Lord Duroc. I figured if that was how Day Three was going to go it was worth staying around for to see what the rest of our days were going to be like. Though I’m glad she has Lt. Watts to deal with the Starfleet reports. I’ve got enough of my own. Sherri can have them.”

“I can’t imagine having civilian and Star Fleet issues on my plate.” she said with a shake of her head. “And gids above that embassy fiasco!”she added with her eyes wide in disbelief. “I saw that vid going viral at my desk and just sat there with my mouth open… I couldn’t believe a Star Fleet Officer of all beings would think that was a good idea!” and she laughed loudly. “They had obviously never met Lord Duroc. I have, several times. I am seriously honestly surprised that there weren’t bodies being handed back to Star Fleet in small pieces.”

“Same,” Cort said before taking another sip of his wine. “But that officer is the same one who tried to flee the Complex while they were trying to arrest him,” Cort said, breaking into a chuckle. “I don’t think ‘smart’ is the word we’re associating with the situation.”

He eyed her for a moment. “Just so you know, the offer was sincere. You’re more than welcome to join any of us for lunch or whatever at any time, even if we can’t get out of the Tower that day.” Until the Vren arrived and they had the gala it was pretty much all hands on deck, and who knew what after looked like.

Dorma nodded and said “I’d like that. I doubt I will get the chance before the Vren, but I’ll certainly try. Usually I’m stuck eating at my desk. Hyrushi is a glutton for punishment when it comes to meetings. Almost non-stop from start to finish. Dasca the same?”

Cort blew out a breath. “Oh yeah. And this week has required… unexpected adjustments that I think are going to mean next week kind will likely be worse than usual. And that’s not even including the gala with the Vren.” When your boss took unexpected time off and and then was determined to catch up before major things happened, it meant a lot of juggling. “Fortunately, she’s got herself set-up at home to be able to do some of it, so it means she won’t need us in the office late constantly. Whether that proves to be a good thing or not, well, we’ll see.”

“How nice is that?!” Dorma exclaimed. “Hyrushi works late almost every single day, which means so do I. And I don’t think he shuts off when goes home, either. I get messages all kinds of weird hours. I swear, I need to find him a woman. Maybe then I could get an evening off!” and she laughed out loud.
