“It did. But that was the simple part. I am most anxious to see how the statement is received… both by the representatives and the rest of the government.” He thought in silence, staring at the door, until his black eyes flicked and focused on Eela. “How are you? Your week has certainly not been boring. How are you feeling?”
Hyrushi, Governor
Eela was, in a word, contained. It was the one way she was coping just now and it seemed necessary. “Work is good,” she said softly. “Beyond that…” Eela averted her gaze and sighed. “It’s mixed.” She shifted her gaze back to him and shrugged. “I’m here.”

Kenzo stood and came around the desk. he leaned back against it and leaned forward and took her hand. “What can I do to help?” he asked, and he let the physical connection create a small connection between them.
Hyrushi, Governor
Eela sucked in a breath but didn’t move her hand even though allowing the connection meant it was impossible to keep up her shield. Especially with him. Underneath that wall that was so necessary here in the Tower, Eela was a swirl of confusion, sadness and resentment. “I don’t know exactly. I wish I had a map for everyone to follow, but all I know how to do right now is put one foot in front of the other,” she said, her hazel eyes shining. “And it’s not all bad, either, and I’m trying to hold on to that, but it’s too easy to just sweep everything else away and focus on the good things. Some might think that to be a positive attitude, but this is too big to ignore the complexity of it all. I was twenty-three when I married him Kenzo. That’s a lot of life to unpick and sort through and make sure seeing things clearly; not as I want them to be but also not interpreting things differently than they were.” And of course do all that while simultaneously being fully the leader people expect of her. Regardless of her assertions in her response, she understood the expectations of her all too well. The colony was counting on her and Kenzo to guide them safely through everything (especially the Vren).

Kenzo set his other hand onto top of the one he was holding and said “I understand.” He took a deep breath and said “Let me help.”
He did understand in a way she wasn’t sure many others around her fully did. Eela nodded and she trusted him so explicitly that she didn’t even ask him to explain.
He looked directly at her, and his grip tightened but wasn’t hard, just firm. For a moment nothing happened but then, just like at Tenkiller’s house, there was a sudden connection and her negative emotions seemed to flow out of her and were gone. Not ‘gone’… but much less powerful. Kenzo’s eyes clenched shut and he held his breath for a long moment before slowly exhaling. He let go of her hand and wiggled his fingers and shook his hands like they had fallen asleep. He stood and went back and sat down somewhat heavily in his chair. “I am very sorry you have to go through all of that, Eela. But I know that you will get through it. You are stronger than you know.”
Kenzo
Eela gazed at him momentarily speechless. It wasn’t his words so much as him willingly taking on some of her pain even knowing from before what it was like. She breathed deeply, her lungs expanding more fully than she had been before. She nodded slowly. “I am strong, but maybe that is what is hard about this. All my experiences, all my training and knowledge and… I missed it. Profoundly. I know all married couples go through difficult times, and we certainly did, but I’m seeing some of it a bit differently. And I’m just so terribly sad. I told Jal’na I was grieving for my life, for what I thought it had been and she suggested I maybe have a funeral for my old self. There’s… something to that idea and I’m considering doing something like that.”

Kenzo was silent a moment and seemed to be trying to keep himself composed, but struggling with it. He pinched the bridge of his nose and squeezed his eyes shut. “There is a Shinto ritual… a funeral rite. One of the many steps. It is called ‘senrei sai’ and literally means the transfer of the spirit. The priest transfers the deceased’s spirit from the body into a wooden tablet. The tablet is held over the body of the deceased while the priest offers ceremonial prayers. Perhaps we could do that for you. Transfer the spirit of your past life out of you and put it to rest.” He let go of his nose and opened his eyes wide momentarily before looking at Eela. “I think it it is time your past released its hold on you.”
Kenzo
She loathed that anyone was subject to everything Cory’s bullshit had unleashed. More of that resentment. “I agree,” she said softly. Eela reached across the table, offering her hand. “Breathe with me,” she said simply, her eyes fixed on him. It wouldn’t be taking back those emotions, but instead she could help him find his equilibrium again through a different process.

Kenzo took a breath and said “One moment.” He waved his hand for a moment and then gently laid it on hers.
It was almost scalding hot. The heat was not quite painful, but it was very uncomfortable.
Kenzo
The discomfort tingled through her spine, but Eela held her hand in place and inhaled deeply, pulling a memory of one of the many waterfalls on Halii. It was one of the special places that she had told Sharah of, where the energy resonated through your body. It was very different than the crystal caves she had shared with him though. This was a more physical aspect of the planet, a heightened awareness of even the tiniest living thing. It was here the wind moved through the unique ferns that grew near the falls and the vibrations sounded like someone humming. These were the singing ferns.
She breathed slowly and evenly, the sound of the water in her mind soothing. In, and out. In… out. For a moment Eela wasn’t even aware of the room. It was just him and her in the spaces between the breaths. And the only reason she could find that place was because he had excavated space from her emotional self. It was a space that was too full, overflowing. She didn’t expect it to change immediately, but it would in time. And maybe faster if she could find this place more frequently.
