Yavia smiled, “Good for her. Age is a number and the larger the number the greater life should be.” She turned the heat off and added blue cheese crumbles to the pan and stirred. She took out thick pork chops and using a sharp knife cut a pocket in them, and stuffed them with the rosemary and the mix. “If it makes her happy, let her sing, and I bet it makes the people around her happy too.” The chops went I to the skillet and Yavia covered it for later. She moved to the island and took the dough out and started forming rolls and placing them on a pan.

She found it more efficient to do the sprouts in small batches, so Eela was doing a handful at a time. “Oh, it does. I don’t think it’s the singing, but the rather inopportune times, like ordering dinner at a restaurant,” she said with a grin. “Especially when she decides to switch up the lyrics. From what Cort has said, she’s made a few people blush over the years,” she said with a chuckle.

“Do you get back to Delta ever?” Eela asked.

Yavia chuckled, “Lady Nature, No. There is nothing on Delta for me to go back to. Sometimes I miss the landscape, but I have seen places equally beautiful. Besides, I am far too busy with life to go back to the beginning. Besides my grandma is never there and she is the only one worth visiting.”

“That I can understand,” Eela said more solemnly. “I love Halii, but aside from some distant relatives I’ve only met a couple times, I have no family left there and I haven’t lived there since I left for the Academy over forty years ago, so…” She shrugged. It was an intrinsic part of her but it still didn’t have the same place in her life that it once did. Not since her parents anyway.

There was something almost meditative about repetitive kitchen tasks and while they talked Eela could relax just a tiny bit more.

Yavia’s parents still lived on Delta, but like she told TK, they didn’t really see eye to eye. They didn’t get her and she wasn’t changing her life for them. She rolled out the last of the rolls, two trays worth a d brushed them with butter and stuck them in the oven. “20 minutes and we will see if I remembered correctly.” Yavia started moving stuff to the sink and cleaning up. “Once those are done you can put them cut end down on the tray.”

Yavia

“All right. Do they need to be oiled or anything before hand?” Eela asked as she worked on what was her last batch of the sprouts. “And I’m looking forward to the rolls. There’s nothing like the smell of fresh bread.”
