(snip)

That sadness sparked a bit of understanding in Eela and so she didn’t press. She scooped another cut up vegetable with her knife and dropped the pieces in the bowl. The chatting while they worked brought more ease within her. It wasn’t so much a distraction- okay, yes it was, but for a different reason. Her comm sat in a pocket in her tunic and she really did want to check in with Cort. She had no doubt he had things under control, but it was so strange to not have looked at anything work related in so long. Even on (rare) days off she had been keeping tabs on different situations out of necessity. But this distance from her other work was probably why her mind had found a path through the mire and a solution to the latest development in her situation.

“There is something wonderful about those times we spend with grandparents, the things they can teach us in ways we don’t realize until we’re much older. Mine are all gone now, but now I’m the grandmother and though I’m far away, I do hope I get to have those moments with my granddaughter as she grows up.”

The garlic was dropped in a small dish and Yavia rinsed her hands and peeked at the dough, noy quite yet. She pulled out a strange contraption with 3 sharp tines attached to a turn handle with a sharp open circle opposite and a flexible arm on the side with another sharp u-shaped piece. Soon it was obvious as Yavia shoved an apple onto the tines and began turning. It peeled, cored and sliced the apple. “I am sure you will. Technology is wonderful and can provide many opportunities. Though it is not quite the same. Will your children come to visit? Or will you take some time to visit them?” The apple peeler worked quickly and soon Yavia had 4 apples peeled and sliced in a bowl. “Oh! That reminds me. I forgot to do something.” She wiped her hands on a towel and brushed flour off herself, making a cloud and went to the main computer. “I was supposed to schedule a time to call my grandmother. I finally found out where she was.” Yavia chuckled, hit send and came back over. “Apparently Delta got boring. So where were we? Oh! Your grandchildren. How many do you have?” Yavia started frying bacon in a skillet.

Eela inwardly chuckled and at the poof of flour and had watched the peeling of the apples between chopping. “Just the one, from my daughter Caridee. Alais is only a few months old. She was born just before I left for Oed. Not going to lie, I miss the baby snuggles. It was always one of the loveliest part of when my own children were that small. But Caridee and her husband Kian will be here in a couple of weeks to celebrate Batarael, a major Haliian holiday with me,” Eela said, breaking into a beaming smile. “I can’t wait, Yavia! It’s been so long since I’ve done a proper observance and I didn’t expect them to want to travel so far with an infant, but they are coming early and intending to stay awhile so we can make their trip worthwhile and have a proper visit.”

Yavia smiled, “That is wonderful. I am glad they are coming and you will get to celebrate and spend time with them all. Buuuut if you ever need a stand in for baby cuddles, the pediatric unit always needs volunteers to hold and rock the babies. Patents want to be there but sometimes they can’t.” Yavia looked up at the door before pulling the bacon out of the pan and adding the apples and shallots Eela had sliced. “Jal’na spends two hours every day there. She calls them her little warriors.”

She finished with the last vegetable. “Where did you find your grandmother? Oh! And anything else I chop while I’m at it?” Eela said, wiggling the knife in her fingers carefully.

“Brussle sprouts. Cut the stem off at the base and then peel the loose leaves off. Then cut them in half.” Yavia demonstrated and then handed her the bag and an empty bowl. “Oh…she’s on Risa now. She was at Alpha Ceti gambling, got bored and went to Risa. To quote her, ‘They are so wonderfully open and loving.’ She’s encouragable.” Yavia laughed.
