Korczak sat in his office at Star Fleet Academy and reviewed the record again. Not that he needed to, but he just couldn’t believe no one flagged the record. He took a breath and sent a message.

To: Lieutenant Tandra Mika- CNS, Oed V
From: Commander Janusz Korczak- Director, Fleet Academy Mental Health

Lieutenant,

Attached you will find the file of one Ensign Gregory Hutchins, Engineer. I ask that you meet with the Ensign and discuss the seemingly obvious dependency he has developed for his Section Mentor. While familiarity is not uncommon in the Mentor - Mentee relationship, I think you will agree that this particular relationship has become borderline obsessive.

It wasn’t until later in the day that Mika had the time to sit and read messages. Arriving at Korczak’s message, she read through the text and then quickly skimmed the file attached at the end. She could not disagree with his assessment that the described relationship had begun to turn obsessive, but she herself was swamped in cases already. She decided to compose a response:

Commander,

*I agree, this certainly looks like a case worthy of my attention. But at present, my department is swamped in other cases and I am trying to organise my department. I will try to get this assigned out but your Ensign Hutchins may end up waiting a few weeks for an appointment.

An hour after the message was sent, her comms chirped. =/\= Lieutenant? =/\= It was her assistant, Lt. JG C’uuthl. =/\= Ma’am, there is a Commander K… Kor… There is a comm from the Academy for you. Should I put it through? =/\=

=/\= Put him through. =/\= Mika replied to her assistant. That had been a fast reply. Email suddenly wasn’t sufficient? Once he was put through, she gave a short, =/\= Lieutenant Mika. =/\=

The screen filled with the bespectacled face of Commander Korczak. =/\= Hello, Lieutenant. Dr. Korczak, here. =/\= His accent was odd, like two separate accents vying for control, but his diction very clear and understandable. =/\= How are you today? It is today there, I hope? =/\= and he gave her a friendly smile.

Mika smiled a friendly and warm smile. =/\= It is indeed, ‘today’, here, Commander. I’ve been okay. How about yourself? =/\= She sat forward just a little bit, to see better, then =/\= So, what’s the reason for the comm call? =/\=

“Oh, I’m fine. Thank you.” he replied. “Ah yes, the call. I just find it better to do discussions like this in person… or as much in person as technology allows for.” and he chuckled dryly. “I am calling to discuss the matter of Ensign Hutchins. I do realize that you are very busy and Oed V is… well… having spoken with a member of the medical staff there on an unrelated matter, I do get the impression that logistical and personnel support has been… ‘lagging behind, let us say. But I am concerned that such a delay in getting him into see a Counselor may cause some unhealthy coping habits to develop. And as he is already showing a pattern of mental health issues surrounding dependence, I do not want him fixating on someone else. As you are well aware, such transference may cause real and significant damage.”

Mika sighed and nodded. “I was transferred here about two weeks ago. I’m still trying to get everything reorganized. Feels like they dumped a big old mess in my lap. Unfortunately, Oed has quite the population, and Medical and Psych services just hasn’t caught up staff wise. We’re a little behind, as you say. I am aware of the dangers of a dependence issue like this but I have twelve other cases I could name off the top of my head that need to be seen now. I don’t even want to know what I’d find if I actually go looking for cases. Myself, and my team, are completely swamped.”

Korczak nodded in understanding. “I am very sorry, Lieutenant. That is quite the unenviable task. I know it may not mean much, but if I can help, please tell me how. Your personnel deserve the same standard of care the rest of Star Fleet receives. And if I can help facilitate that in any way, I will do what I can.”

“I’m not sure what you could do, to be honest… Unless you can send me more staff and a psych trained assistant to intake cases.” She thought a long moment and then smiled and looked back to the screen and the Commander. “How would you like to handle Ensign Hutchins yourself?”

Korczak laughed a good natured laugh. “If I was there Lieutenant, I absolutely would. Even if it was just to help you with the workload.” He looked back at the screen and said “But honestly. What can I do? I am not without some small degree of influence. And as I am sure you are probably aware, I am not averse to conflict if the situation calls for it.” and he chuckled. While not well known around the fleet in general, it was well known in the Fleet Mental Health services that one Commander Janusz Korczak once walked uninvited into Star Fleet Command Headquarters, went into a closed door meeting of the Commander of Star Fleet Medical and the Command Admiral of Star Fleet herself, sat down at the table and spent the next ninety minutes explaining in great detail why downsizing the Fleet Academy Counseling program was not only detrimental to fleet morale and effectiveness; but also increased the risk of security breaches and desertion. He was, of course, promptly disciplined and put on base restriction for six-months… but he was also put in charge of expanding said program by a factor of two.

Mika raised her brows. “I have heard some things about that. But I am not sure you could secure Oed the resources it needs for its medical and mental health programs. Every starship I’ve worked on has been better equipped to handle itself.” And she’d worked on a fair few for the length of her career. “You could be here. Despite the aforementioned issues, working here was remarkably like returning to Earth. You could continue your work and help with the workload from Oed.” He was an experienced and very competent counselor. His presence would be a huge help to the whole of Oed.
