Yavia waved with a grin from the kitchen. She had several bags of groceries on the counter and she was going through each one like it was a long lost treasure chest. “Jal’na will you stay for dinner? Do you want to bring your warrior to dinner here? We can compare notes.”

Jal’na’s laughter bounced around the house. “As much fun as that would be, Yavia, tonight I must decline. Soon though we will have to do that.” Jal’na ushered her into the den for a bit of privacy and took out the small tool kit. “I think your brace has been doing just fine, but I noticed that the tenderness in your back from where you were twisting and throwing the glasses was partially caused by the brace being to tight. It was restricting your ability to twist. We don’t want to restrict, we want to support.” Jalna lifted the back of Eela’s shirt and made a few adjustments on each side. “Alright, twist, as far as is comfortable. Does that feel better? Or do you want me to reset it?”

Jal’na

Eela twisted her body gently, seeing how far it would go. It was limited to begin with but it felt like there was just the tiniest bit more flex and she breathed out with more ease. “Better,” she declared. Eela turned to the Klingon. “Jal’na,” she said softly. “Do you think when I see Urasus that it’ll be better… or worse? I mean, am I just kidding myself?” All the hard work just to have it ruined or set back. She thought about that whim of an idea she had had.

Jal’na shook her head, “I think you are doing better. You have more movement and strength and not so much pain. We’ve adjusted the brace a few times as you’ve gotten stronger. You may not have made as much progress as you wish, but I think you are improving. I think Eraras will be pleased.”

The relief she felt was strange, but perhaps not. It was that glimmer of something positive and Eela knew she needed that more than she realized.

“I miss dancing,” Eela said. “I know I can’t do so the way I did before, but I would like to do a little bit more without worrying so much.”

“Dancing! Ah we can work on that certainly. There is no goal that can’t be reached, Eela. It might look different than it used to, but it can be done,” Jal’na assured her. Jal’na locked the adjustments in and closed her tool kit after fixing the shirt back in place. “All done.”

Jal’na

“Thank you, Jal’na,” Eela said and reached out to rest her hand on the Klingon’s arm. “And thank you, for yesterday.” A few small words to convey the enormity of what that moment in her foyer had meant to her, of Jal’na’s decisiveness and care when Eela struggled to put thoughts coherently together.

Jal’na gripped her shoulder, “No thanks is needed. I am glad you are safe and well.” She released her shoulder and moved back into the other room, sliding the tool case into her bag. “Eela I want you to take the optional anti-inflammatory tonight and tomorrow at least. Let your back have a break. And if you are coming tomorrow I suggest you go ahead and take it before you arrive.” Jal’na stepped out the door yelling, “HERB! WE’RE LEAVING!” There was a grunt/snarl and then Jal’na sighed loud enough to be heard through the door. “No I will not wait inside. If I am not safe here, you are all pathetic and Tenkiller should do something other than fire you all. Really.” Then a car door and a second closing.

Gathering her padd, Eela brushed her fingers against the book of remedies that remained resting on the coffee table before she moved back into the kitchen. “Is there anything I can do to help?” she asked Yavia lightly. She wasn’t cheery by any stretch of the imagination but Eela was definitely more composed.

Yavia laughed full out giggles. “Oh poor Jal’na. I bet they do it to irritate her on purpose.” She slid a cutting board, knife, and a two bowls, one empty one full of a root vegetable, over. “It’s too early to start really cooking for dinner, but I figured I could start prepping some of it. If you can slice those about this long,” she held up her fingers to indicate the length, “I will actually try to make fresh bread.” Yavia started pulling out unsalted butter, granulated sugar, kosher salt, whole milk, active dry yeast, egg, all-purpose flour, and vegetable oil. Yavia got to work on the island, flour being tossed about everywhere. Yavia made a mess because it was fun! “You’re book inspired me. I haven’t made this in years. They are my great-great-great grandmother’s recopies? I think that’s right,” she laughed, “Her husband was human and she learned these from his family. We’ll see if I remember.”
