She nodded and tapped her left thigh three times with her fingertips. “You know, this is the first public facing thing I’ve done that isn’t related to executing some part of my job. I’m still second-guessing my decision to participate but I know that it’s something I need to do for myself.” She had told Nurse Shrine as much. “And hopefully I won’t need the escape since Jones told me he was going, but I’m glad I have the option if I need it, so thank you.” Even if she ended up with some complete stranger, that actually would be fine with her. It was just knowing she had people there who would do what they could to make it less awkward for her. It would give her more confidence in what was really a ridiculous situation if you thought too hard on it.

He nodded at her signal, and then said “Good. I trust that the Mr. Jones will be a gentleman should he be fortunate enough to win the contest for your time.” and he went back to reading. “Oh… I was unaware that Ms. Fen would be participating… interesting. I certainly hope no one thinks she is offering more than her culinary skills. The last person to make unwarranted advances on her after she had previously declined lost their hand halfway to the elbow.” His tone was dry and flat, so it was very hard to tell if he was kidding or not.

Kenzo

Eela smirked. “I can believe it. And I do think that the whole set-up has been very heavily prefaced with the fact that this is about sharing the community with each other.”

She sipped her coffee and her tone became more thoughtful. “And I’m not worried about Jones. He’s far too respectful.” That moment in her office where he was serious about not wanting to cross a line or push a boundary where she didn’t want it to be told her everything she needed to know about him as a person.

Kenzo nodded and said “Good. I will tell Ms. Fen to stop sharpening her wakazashi.” and then sipped his coffee. “I am hoping the event is successful. I know it will help, but if it does well, it will encourage more of such events. I can say that Oed becoming known for its ability to give back to it’s people would be a solid stone upon which to build a reputation.”

Kenzo

She downed more coffee and set the cup before her carefully before drinking some water. “Funny, I remember you chiding me about assuming Oed wanted to be more open.” She was entirely teasing. “The way I see it, it was inclined but it just needed a little bit a nudge in the right direction.” Eela had been honest about not coming to Oed with plans in mind but the longer she was here the more inklings of what the future could hold were moving through her. It made her so very excited in a way she hadn’t been for a long time. It was hard work but enjoyable. Most of the time. Other days were like last night where the monumental responsibility weighed heavily.

Eela inhaled deeply and pushed herself to her feet. “I should get going. I have a few things to take care of at home and I’m pretty sure I’m going to need a nap before this evening.”

She gazed at him deeply and it felt like she should say something, but also that it wasn’t necessary.

He didn’t look up from the PaDD, he just said “You are most welcome… my friend. Enjoy the day. I look forward to seeing you at the fundraiser.”
