The morning began with a call.

[o] Mr. Devalin, this is the reception desk. A package has arrived for you, sir. Would like us to send it up? Or will you pick it up on your way out? [o]

Sky Harbor Tower Reception

Logan rubbed his eyes, sitting up. “Send it up, please.” He said. It was likely from the mysterious man he’s been working for. Though why it hadn’t just…appeared…in his apartment he wasn’t quite sure.

He walked out into the kitchen, occasionally lightly slapping his cheek to wake up. “Wake up. You’ve got a job today, last thing you need to is to fall sleep when meeting clients.” He said in way of a pep talk to himself.

Logan Mills

The chime rang. It was one of the building staff with a large envelope.

Inside was a series of images, individuals, with a sheet of actual paper with specific about them attached. A small note on the front said ‘Memorize this. You have 20 minutes.’

The Boss

Thanking the staff member, Logan sat down, setting himself a timer to memorize the specifics. He decided to stop questioning why at this point. If he was going to be embroiled in something more illegal, so be it. At this point, there was no getting out.

Logan Mills

Less than an hour later, a slider was ready for him at the front entrance to the building. The door slid closed as he climbed in, and in a half hour the car stopped in the financial district of the city in front of a large multi-tenant office building.

As he walked onto the lobby, a wholly unfamiliar face walked up to him. “Mr. Devalin? My name is Johnathn Brooks, sir.” The speaker was human, male, and his early forties. “I was your father’s Executive Assistant. I know this is hard, but I want you to know I am here to help if I can. If you will follow me, I’ll show you to your office and then the conferenece room.” and he gestured to a series of lifts in the back of the lobby.

The Boss?

“Uh, thank you.” Logan said, following the man to the lifts. Already down to business, didn’t seem like it was too illegal, just yet. He was curious if he was ever going to actually meet whoever that random voice was, but now was not the time, besides, what was he going to ask, ‘do you know who it was who did this to me?’ is not generally a question that goes over very well in any circle.

Logan Mills

Brooks called the lift and then pressed 18 when they stepped inside. As they began to move, he said “So he reps from Cartwright and H’al-en are here already. I’m sure your father probably told you about the merger of the our two companies, and this is just kind of a formality before the final agreements are stamped by the Boards of both companies and such. They just want to extend their sympathies and ensure that you are not going to change anything last-minute.” Logam’s wrist communicator vibrated with an incoming text.

Call it off. Recommend playing the family angle. ‘My dad built this company with his own two hands’ kinda stuff. But cank the deal. Thats only job today.

The Boss

Logan raised an eyebrow at the message, but nodded to himself. “He mentioned it in passing.” He said, as the lift came to a stop.

Logan Mills

The doors opened into a small hallway. Multiple doors on both sides led to various companies and divisions of those companies. But at the end of the hall was a single door with a sign that said Devalin Shipping and Recieving. The two walked through the door and into a small office with a reception desk. An Orion woman sat behind the desk and she smiled at Brooks. “Mr. Brooks, welcome back. And Mr. Devalin, a real pleasure to meet you. I’m Kasindra, the Receptionist. We all were truly saddened to hear about your dad. He was a good man, and a fantastic boss. If you need anything, let me know.” She looked back at Brooks and said “They are here. Conference room.” Brooks nodded and looked at Scott. “Ready?”

Devalin Staff

“Ready as I can be.” Logan said, following Brooks into the Conference room. He considered walking in and just saying the deal was off, but that would look highly suspicious so he decided to pretend to humor the contract signing.

He nodded to the representatives of the other company as he entered. Taking his seat, he spoke. “Shall we get to it then.”

Logan Mills

Brooks looked at hima moment and then said to the representatives, two humans and a Rigellian, “Gentlemen, thank you for coming. I’m sure yku can empathize with Mr. Devalin’s… ‘directness’.” They all nodded and one of the humans said “Of course, of course. Mr. Devalin… Scott, if I may be so bold… we were deeply saddened to hear of the loss of your father. He was a good man, and we will miss his candor and humor a great deal. He spoke very highly of you and your desire to enter the business world. He knew you would do amazing things. And speaking for all of us, we are excited to have you as part of the merger.”

The Money People

“I’m excited to be part of the merger.” Logan said, quickly taking in the room as he spoke. “My father built this company with his own hard work. It’s important to me, as I’m sure you know. If this is what he would’ve wanted, then I’m willing to review the contract and sign today if everything looks good.”

Logan Mills

Brooks looked at the representatives and held up a hand. He then leaned into Scott and whispered softly “The contract has been reviewed and approved already, Mr. Devalin. All that remains is the signing by their Board and you to finalize. Your father was willing. I don’t think review will be necessary. I mean, the signing is supposed to take place day after tomorrow.”

Brooks

Logan looked between Brooks and the representatives. “Then I guess we’re calling this deal off. My father built this company, and I don’t actually think that this merger is a good idea. We’re not going through with this.” He stood up and looked at Brooks. “Please ensure that whatever needs to be done to cancel this agreement is done.”

He looked at the representatives, nodding to them. “Gentlemen. I apologize, but I’d much prefer to keep the company in the family. I hope you understand.” He said as he left the room. He made a cutting motion to Kasindra. “I’m not going through with the merger, and I’m not entertaining other options or alternatives. Please see the representatives out.”

Logan Mills

The woman looked at him as if he had grown a third eyeball for a moment… and then she grinned. “Yes sir!” she said enthusiastically and presed the comms. At that moment the door burst open and Brooks came storming into the room. “WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?! Do you know how long I have worked… how much I have put into this deal… how many late nights and crap meals and smiling at your simpleton of a father?!? DO YOU?!?!” The wrist comm vibrated…

Kill him. Now.

The Boss

Logan reached into his pocket and pulled out the phaser. Without looking, he set it to kill mode–something else he practiced during the two weeks–and shot the phaser at Brooks, hitting him square in the chest. After a moment to let his ears stop ringing from Brooks’s shouting, he looked at Kasindra, keeping the phaser at his side, but not raised. “No one insults my father like that.”

Logan Mills

Ksindra stared at him for a moment and then said “You owe me five slips of latinum.” A low moan escaped from Brooks and he rolled on his side. “I’m gonna puke…” he predicted. “Waa waaa waa.” she said. The door to the rooms past the reception desk opened, and the Breen from a few weeks ago came in. Behind him came a human man in a nice suit, impeccably groomed. He looked down at Brooks and said “Throw up yet?” to which the man on the floor said “No. And I’m not gonna.” through gritted teeth. The man chuckled and said “Uh-huh, sure.” and then he looked at ‘Scott’.

“You know you should never… and I mean never… just kill somebody like that.” The voice… it was the voice from the comms. And the whatever black place Logan had been a prisoner in. “Seriously. Question authority sometimes, will ya? Especially is lives are on the line. I didn’t hire you to be an assassin, after all.”

The Boss

Logan sighed. “No. You didn’t. I was an idiot.” Though he spoke to the man, his eyes never left the Breen, almost as though he was afraid of him. Though he was honestly afraid of everyone in the room right now.

“So what now. Is our agreement null and void? Though it looks like this was some sort of test that I failed so that alone, by what you said back in the room of death means I’m screwed either way.”

Logan Mills

There was silence for a moment…

And then Brooks puked and everyone (save the Breen) began laughing. The man, the voice, said “Five slips to everybody. Pay up after you clean up.” Brooks cursed and held his hand in the universal thumbs-up symbol of agreement. The ‘voice’ guy turned and looked at Logan. “Test? No. No tests. Assessment is more Ike it. And you did what you were told… even if it was stupid. So there’s that. I can work with that.” He held out his hand and said “Jason Reilly. Assistant Director of the Colonial Intelligence Agency.”

“Welcome to the CIA.”

Reilly- AD, CIA

Logan shook hands, partially confused. “I guess that explains…everything.” He realized he’d been holding the phaser this whole time, and slipped it back in his pocket, before continuing, “You intelligence types are so cryptic.” He stated the obvious, “now, if there’s nothing else, I should probably try to look not suspicious when I leave.” He turned to head towards the lift.

Logan Mills

Reilly laughed and said “‘You’ intelligence types? Oh my boy… you mean us intelligence types. You are with us now.” and he held out his hand and said “Let me see your phaser real quick. Promise you, I’m not going to shoot you. I mean, not right now, anyway.”

Reilly, AD-CIA

Logan hesitate a minute, before pulling the phaser out and handing it over. “I’m not planning on failing you anymore to get shot.” He said, crossing his arms. “And am I ever actually going to ship anything? Or just stay planetside the whole time?”

Logan Mills

Reilly took the phaser and then slid a completely transparent glove off his hand, turining it inside out and sealing the phaser inside it. He handed the device to Kasindra, who tucked it away under the desk. Reilly looked at Mills and said “Of course you are. But if you want to just start going without the proper training and equipment… thats perfectly fine.” He looked at Kasindra again and said “Hand him the file.” and he looked back at Mills -slash-Devalin. “Good luck.” and he turned and walked out of the room.

Kasindra shook her head and said “A little advice, kid. Next time, if you live long enough to have a next time, don’t spit in the hand of the man that pays you.” and she held out a PaDD. “Take it home and study. All the pertinents are in it.”

Reilly, AD-CIA

Logan took the PaDD and tried to hurry to catch up to Jason. He doubted he could, considering how these guys seemed to just vanish and appear at random, but he felt like he had to try. Maybe he’d pick up a trick or two. He also didn’t like the idea of going out there blind without any way to defend himself, though he had managed for several years prior, so he hoped that would at least help him a little bit out there.

Logan Mills

Reilly was waiting outside the office for the lift. As ‘Scott’ approached, he said “Hey. So just so you are aware, that office is where you will operate out of. You actually do have a legitimate business to run. Eight ships, twelve warehouses here on Oed. Five ships are operational, the other three need crews. Once you get that job-” and he indicated the PaDD, “- finished, you come work outta here. Your staff is all CIA, and they are there to help you. Ask them if you need a hand.” and he lkooked back at the lift as the doors opened and he stepped inside.

Reilly, AD-CIA

Logan followed him in, “and outside of that, I’m free to do my own thing?” He figured it was a longshot, but he had to ask anyway. Maybe he’d be able to get out and meet some people on the colony or nab a few ‘extra’ jobs.

Logan Mills

“Sure.” Reilly replied. “As long as its legal and you run the company we’ve handed you so much above board that you are beyond reproach.” He hit the Lobby icon and theift began to move down. “The o ly time you get to do… what you do… is when I tell you to. But I will tell you this: you do this right, and you’ll be swimming in the finest things life has to offer. You do it wrong… and they’ll never find your body. So pick. Wealth and privilege? Or a quick death and your corpse in a recycler. Wholly up to you.” The doors opened and Reilly stepped out. He turned and said “Most people never get a second chance. Let alone a head start. Don’t screw it up.”

Reilly, AD-CIA
