Eela beamed. “I think you might be right. And I think my time here has been very revealing. There’s a saying that you don’t know what you’ve lost until it’s gone but I think it’s also true that you’ve lost until you found it again.” She drank from her cup, turning it on the counter as she set it back down.

“What about you Kenzo? You are often a very contained person. Very intentional. I’m curious how you would describe your experience of your empathy.”

He thought for a moment and then said “If I do not put up a barrier, I sense it as a cocktail party. Many separate conversations going on all at once. The range I am able to perceive is larger than average. But in that cocktail party, I can choose to focus on a single speaker, and that in turns lowers the background noise considerably. I also focus on maintaining my own sense of self. I do not want to cause my emotions to influence the genuine emotional state of others. For instance…” He tookna breath and slowly lowered the barrier he had in place just enough so Eela would suddenly feel the drinks more than she did just a second ago, a kind of humming euphoria all over her body. Kenzo shrugged and said “And that is what I am feeling at the moment.”

Ahhh that lovely tingle of intoxication! She wasn’t quite there yet herself, but then again he had said he was two-up on her. She let the sensation wash over her and closed her eyes, just accepting it for what it was. When Eela opened her eyes she held mischief in her eyes. “You have no idea how much I want to share a particular Haliian ritual with you. I think you’d find it extremely… illuminating.” And it wasn’t that she thought it was be funny to witness, she truly thought that he might find parts of himself he didn’t even know existed.
