Kenzo nodded once and then set his hand on hers. “I am here to help. You are my friend, not just my partner in government. If we cannot support each other in both contexts, we would not be effective. So know that the offer is a standing one.” and he raised his cup to hers.

For a moment she just let his hand rest on hers and soaked up that sensation, a sense of relief flooding her. Maybe it was that simple. She was a touch telepath. It wasn’t about reading people’s thoughts so much as the intimacy that touch provided. It could be overwhelming and so with non-Haliians many of her people were cautious. She was too, especially in recent years. But really, who would she have had this sort of connection with outside of a few select people. Eela carefully turned her hand so their palms were touching. She couldn’t send him thoughts, nor did she try to read his. Instead, Eela sent feelings of trust and care.

Meanwhile, her free hand reached out for the sake bottle and she refilled her glass, touching hers to his before taking a deep sip.

Kenzo looked at her with a, for him anyway, slightly puzzled expression. “Tell me how your empathy differs from mine. Is touch required? Or does it simply clarify or intensify your empathy? I am curious, because a good deal of my training was in learning how to control the ‘volume’ of emotions.” He filled her cup again, drank from his.

His hand stayed where it was.

She smiled at him. “My empathy works the same as yours. I can read the emotions a being emits, sense life forces in sapient and sentient creatures. But through touch I am telepathic. I can read a person’s thoughts directly, unless like you they maintain a barrier. Whether another person could receive thoughts depends on them. But touch also allows me a greater sense of all life. To touch a tree is to feel the sap moving within it. Things like that. And that’s not even factoring in the canar.”

Eela sipped more of the sake. “Halii is filled with this crystalline formations and one particular kind is sensitive to the frequency of our telepathy and so when we touch it it can amplify our abilities. So much so that someone who is not a telepath can share our thoughts, feelings… even the way we experience the world. It can be use to amplify all sorts of interactions, but it’s most commonly used in intimacy. The places these crystals come from though? To be there is so intense that you can feel the very vibrations of the Universe. I’ve experienced it only once, and it’s like…” Eela shook her head even as she allowed herself to remember that sensation for which there were no words. It was to feel so expansive that you were everything all at once and yet feel so contained and grounded you felt sheltered, safe. Did he understand? This was what it was to be Haliian. This is why connection was so important and why Eela struggled so much at times. to be disconnected for a Haliian was a slow death, a trip into madness.

Through the touch, Kenzo got an idea of the sensation and the memory of her experience. He nodded slowly and then said “I belive I do understand, yes…” He looked at her and said “Everything is about connection for you. Connecting with others on varying levels… emotional, physical, mental, et cetera. And your people need that connection in order to not only experience others, but to cement their sense of self in relation to the others around them. Is that correct?”
