Kenzo cut another piece. “Good. Try it with a touch of soy and a bit of wasabi.” he said.
She did so and the wasabi definitely added a complexity to the whole mix that she rather enjoyed. “Remind of the filling of this interesting savoury pastry I tried in the Gamma Quadrant. My brain was momentarily confused,” she said with utter delight.
He set the pieces of the tuna roll on her plate, and ate a piece himself, setting the rest aside. He then took a piece of nori and cut it into strips. He picked up a piece of… something… and wrapped the strip around it. The piece was shaped like a rough triangle, dark red at the tip and fading to white at the base. “Red clam. Somewhat tough, but with a smooth flavor.” and he set it on her plate.

Eela was nothing if not adventurous with new things. Hell, one didn’t take a job like hers without a healthy dose of adventurous spirit (and perhaps a touch of masochism as well), so she was sampling everything with intrigue and appreciation. Tasting the clam she rocked her head back and forth. “Not my favourite texture, but the taste is nice enough.”
“Thank you fo doing this for me. I really do appreciate it,” she said, twirling her modified chopsticks before sipping more sake.

“You are welcome. My father insisted I learn an art. I chose calligraphy. My teacher made sushi, so I learned both.” He looked at her as he took a drink and then said “Here. Give me a moment.” The knife was picked up and with the skill of a surgeon, Kenzo began cutting fish and vegetables into odd shapes and lengths, then seemingly piling them onto nori and rice before rolling it into a roll. He looked at Eela and gave her a slight smile and then he cut the roll in half…
Bracing her elbow on the counter and propping her chin in her hand, Eela watched him with deep fascination. She couldn’t figure out what he was doing other than demonstrating his exceptional knife skills (she was no slouch in the kitchen, but he was light years ahead) so she was happy to observe while sipping sake.
Inside was 友 made of red and black set against the white rice. “Tomodachi. Japanese Kanji. It means ‘Friend’.”

The beaming smile that touched her face was so much larger in her emotions. Eela pressed her hand to her heart. “Kenzo, I’m touched. Though some might say you just wanted the excuse to show off.” More teasing but also she really was moved. It never ceased to be amazing when someone went out of their way to do something special for you. And Kenzo was not a man of flashy big gestures. This might was well have been a marquee sign! She accepted the gestures with matching affection.

He shrugged and said “Perhaps. Although wanting to see if I still could was a large part as well.” He took a drink and then picked up a piece of the Friend roll to her. “Kampai, tomodachi.” and he actually smiled.

It felt like a ceremony was occurring and so Eela lifted her plate with her own warm smile and bowed her head. “Thank you.”
Eela carefully took the piece of expertly crafted sushi, dipped it and popped it into her mouth. The criss-cross of vegetables really made for a lovely mix of texture. “It really is lovely. I’ll take this over my soup any day and I actually make a mean soup.”
One of these days she would introduce him to some of the Haliian ceremonies. Actually, Batarael would be the perfect time and she was already minded to invite him for the First Day meal. In fact… “You know, Caridee and her family will be coming for Batarael soon. The first day is a big celebration with friends and family and we kick off the holiday with a big feast. Would you like to come?”
