“It was a life changing injury. There are things you can’t do anymore that you used to enjoy. It changed the way you look, because of the brace. I want to tell you to give it time, but it’s been years. I feel like you haven’t really processed it, dealt with it, in a healthy way where you can really heal from it. Do you still paint?” That was something her injuries shouldn’t prevent her from picking back up.

Eela inhaled deeply, letting it fill her lungs. She shook her head and blew out that breath. “Not for lack of trying. I’ve tried a few times but it never felt right. It didn’t give me pleasure in the way it used to. Watercolours are… soft. I’m not soft anymore. It doesn’t fit.”

“What about other kinds of paint? Oil, maybe? Or acrylics? It might give the same kind of creative release as watercolours used to.” Mika frowned in thought. “I do think you should find a creative release that does still feel good. It doesn’t even have to be painting, it could be something completely different.”

“I garden,” she said softly. “My friend also does and helped me with the more physical set-up. So I’m growing things on my patio. Sowing seeds,” Eela said with a small smile “I’m growing some things for the kitchen, some for some of the herbal remedies my father used to make.”

Mika nodded. “I like to grow herbal remedies, medical plants.” Sharah had mentioned helping her start a garden of those things. She hadn’t done it yet, though. “It’s good, takes your mind off things.” She smiled and nodded to Eela, “Tell me more about your garden.”

“It takes up the entire patio and we made it so there are sort of rooms. A cooking and entertaining area, a lounge area. Soon I’ll have a hot tub out there, which is good for my back.” Eela relaxed a little, her hands gestural as she spoke, more fluid. “The whole side of my apartment is windows and the main living area is adjacent to the patio, so I can entertain and people could move back and forth. But mostly I just like going out in the morning with my coffee and checking on things. Seeing the changes, picking out weeds or trimming things as needed.” She shrugged. “I don’t have a lot of free time so having something that will survive if I can’t get to it for a day or two, but… I guess it’s my way of setting roots down on Oed. My way of saying “I’m staying’.”
