“Because the Federation as a governing body has done nothing to establish trust here, but they have many things to foster distrust.” he said plainly. “If they are going to be conducting diplomatic matters in our territory, I believe it is in the best interests of the colony to know what they are doing. Now, my thought was if they can establish a solid foundation of trust and cooperation, then the asset would no longer be required. But until such a time as that happens? Well… I would prefer to know when another Vren-like event is on the horizon before it gets dropped in our lap.”

Eela leaned back and closed her eyes, letting the arguments war within her. He was right, she didn’t like it. Putting herself in Mathis’ shoes she would be furious if she had learned about someone doing so on her turf. It wasn’t even the results so much as the principal of the matter.

When she opened her eyes she was not even close to being decided on the matter. “There is some logic to your reasoning, Kenzo, but on the small off-chance they figured it out, are you prepared for the consequences? Because I can assure you it would not be good. And if it happened at all during negotiations with the Vren it could derail the whole damn thing.”

Kenzo thought for a long moment and then said “The consequences would be significant, yes. But answer me this honestly.” ansd he leaned back and fixed his black eyes on her. “Would those consequences be more or less significant than this colony being caught unaware, yet again, in a conflict between the Federation and some other entity?” He watched he her for a moment and then added “Please understand, I am not advocating that we spy on the embassy. I do not and will not approve any kind of operation to hinder or hamper the Embassy’s efforts to do what they do… regardless of if I agree with it or not. I simply want to know what is happening within the confines of this colony.”

Eela gazed hard at him. “You’re assuming that Mathis wold hold back on us. I think we’ve come far along in the process that I feel certain that would not be the case. But regardless of that, you forget that that one building become not Oed. Just like the House Duroc Embassy is their territory and I know you wouldn’t be so reckless as to violate that. Hell, we just went through a whole mess because someone did exactly that! And even if on the off-chance you are about to tell me that you do have someone inside his embassy, I know Lord Duroc well enough that there is no way he one, doesn’t know about it, and two, has given at least tacit understanding. You do not have that same arrangement with Ambassador Mathis.”

Kenzo shook his head. “No, I do not have such designs on the House Duroc Embassy. One, they have only shown themselves to be a true ally of Oed. Two, and as you pointed out first, the embassy is not foreign territory. It is Federation,and we are a territory of the Federation. Three, Mathis may not want to hold back information… but that does not mean she will not be told to do so. And while you are familiar with her, I am not. So tell me… is she the kind of person who would violate direct orders and breach security to keep you and I informed? I would think not, as she has been entrusted with a project of this significance. And last but certainly not least… do you honestly believe the Federation will not and have not done the exact same thing to us? Plant agents to feed information back to Star Fleet Intelligence? FedSec? The Senate? If you can honestly say that you, Eela Dasca, veteran of the Diplomatoc Corps and decades of Star Fleet bureaucracy… if you can tell me honestly that no, you believe in your heart of hearts that that has not and will not happen… I will drop the topic and give you my word not to pursue it.”
