“As do I, Governor,” Jeannette said with a gracious bow of her head. “Please do contact myself or Mr. Jones as you need to. At least for now we’ll just be down a few floors,” she said with a smile.

Rising to her feet, she gave them both a half bow. “Governor, Lieutenant Governor.”

Kenzo stood and bowed.

Eela stood and gave Mathis a warm smile and nod. She was liking the woman more and more, but she could sense Jeannette was still trying to find her place here. She empathized with her greatly.

Mathis stepped out of the office feeling more at ease despite the looming difficulties and the massive amount of work. Her mind was still processing Kek’s unexpected request about the nurseries. These were going to be talks unlike she any she had conducted in a very long time. Not since that particular time that she wasn’t even able to speak of. May the Universe have mercy on all of them.

She turned and gazed at Kenzo. “You know, my constant surprise about Oed is starting to feel more natural. I’m just expecting the unexpected and this feels like any other day.”

Kenzo watched the Ambassador leave and then nodded slightly. “Then you are light years ahead of your predecessors.” and he turned and gave her a small smile. “They took the correct property.” he said in a voice of satisfaction. He moved to his desk and said “I want to discuss something with you… something you may not be keen to know, and you don’t need to know it. But… I want to talk to you as my partner in this. Not as a representative of Star Fleet or the Lieutenant Governor. What do you think? Can we move our working relationship to that level?” His question was a sincere one.

Hyrushi, Governor

Her curiosity was immense and Eela followed him to his desk. “Of course, Kenzo,” she said, grabbing one of the chairs and bringing it to the side so thre wasn’t a desk between them. “What is it you have to share?” That he was willing to vocalize a shift between them felt like a distinctly important event and thus she gave him her undivided attention.

He looked at her and said, very plainly, “I intend to ask Director James to insert a Colonial Intelligence asset into the Federation Embassy staff. What do you think of that approach?”

Kenzo

Her surprise and dismay were surely anticipated by Kenzo but as Eela gazed at him she shook her head more to shake herself out of the shock. “I understand why you might be inclined to do so but not only is it highly ill advised it’s illegal to broach the sanctity of a diplomatic facility, even if it is our own technically.” What makes you feel it necessary to take such a step?”

“Because the Federation as a governing body has done nothing to establish trust here, but they have many things to foster distrust.” he said plainly. “If they are going to be conducting diplomatic matters in our territory, I believe it is in the best interests of the colony to know what they are doing. Now, my thought was if they can establish a solid foundation of trust and cooperation, then the asset would no longer be required. But until such a time as that happens? Well… I would prefer to know when another Vren-like event is on the horizon before it gets dropped in our lap.”

Eela leaned back and closed her eyes, letting the arguments war within her. He was right, she didn’t like it. Putting herself in Mathis’ shoes she would be furious if she had learned about someone doing so on her turf. It wasn’t even the results so much as the principal of the matter.

When she opened her eyes she was not even close to being decided on the matter. “There is some logic to your reasoning, Kenzo, but on the small off-chance they figured it out, are you prepared for the consequences? Because I can assure you it would not be good. And if it happened at all during negotiations with the Vren it could derail the whole damn thing.”
