Reilly shrugged and said “Well… why don’t you go home and pack a bag and come back?” He checked the time. “Its only 2130. You could be back here in less than an hour. I’ll make up one of the guest rooms for you. I’ll even add you to the apartment’s approved visitors. Then you can come and go as you please. How does thst sound? And if you get back and don’t want to make the trip, well… we can talk about it again tomorrow when I meet you after your shift. Ok?”Jason
Well that was an easy simple solution wasn’t it. O-K Hannah took a step back and turned. She paused by the counter and looked back over her shoulder at him, her expression questioning, curious, a bit confused. Then she snagged a piece of the hard candy. Then she headed for the elevator because if she didn’t she wouldn’t.
Hannah entered her apartment feeling more lively than she had in awhile, until she looked around. He wasn’t here and never would be, and yet he was everywhere. She stood there a moment as the anger and bitterness bubbled and rolled under the surface. She grabbed the football off the shelf and sent it spirling across the room into the bulk head, knocking over a picture and it bounced a couple times and wobbled into stillness.
The baby didn’t like anger because Hannah was suddenly sick and barely made the bathroom. She sat on the cold tile floor for several minutes. She needed to get up. She was going back, she hadn’t changed her mind and baby was going to have to just settle down. When she stood she heard a tint metalic slither and looked down. Daniel’s dog tags had fallen out of her pocket. She set them on the counter while she cleaned herself up and grabbed a couple of things. Then…she sat on the bed staring at them in her hand.
She was shaken awake. She opened her eyes to Daniel sitting next to her. “It’s time for me to go.” She lip read. She had nodded and sat up reaching for her implants and he grabbed her hands. When she looked at him he started talking again. “No Hannah, just me. You aren’t going.” She was confused. That was the plan. She must have misunderstood, she wasn’t awake yet. She tugged her hand free reaching for and putting on one implant. “Daniel? I’m ready, just let me get up.” He shook his head hard at her. “No, Hannah. You are not going.” He held her hand palm up and dropped his tags into her hand. “Keep them safe for me. But don’t…don’t wear them this time.” He stood up and got to the door before he came back and kissed her cheek. “Be happy Hannah, remember me.” And then he was gone.
“These never really meant that much did they? You didn’t come back for them the first time. And you knew you weren’t coming back and you left them behind, just like me.” Her instinct was to throw them, instead she got up and reaches into the closet for a small box and dropped them inside and closed it. Then she tossed the box into a crate labeled ‘Daniel’ and sealed it.
She grabbed a small hiking pack and tossed what she needed into it and then left. Maybe it was a mistake, but she was going to find out either way. It didn’t feel wrong at all. It felt like the right choice. She should have taken a thicker sweater the temperature felt like it had dropped a lot as she made her way back across the blocks to his apartment.
Hannah
When she entered the Sky Harbor Tower reception area, a Bolian security guard smiled and said “Welcome back, Ms. Asimina.” The lift took her right up and her palm print worked like she lived there…
The door to the apartment opened for her and a voice from above her said “I’m up here. Second floor. I gave you the room at the very end.”
Jason
Hannah paused just past the door way and looked around and then up as he called down. She moved toward the stairs, grabbing another candy as she passed the counter. On the second floor she was suddenly very nervous and her arms tingles and her stomach fluttered. She turned toward the end of the hall and stepped into the room “Jason?”
Hannah
“In here.” he said from the last room.
The room had been furnished with a bed, dresser, and a vanity. Jason was finishing making the bed. The linens on the bed were a light gray, with pale blue pillows. He looked up as she came into biew and he said “Hey. You made it back. Good. I hope this is ok. Its the closest to the bathroom on this floor. If you want to change later, we can do that.”
Jason
“No…this is fine. I could have…” she waved toward the bed. He had made it for her. He didn’thave to but he did. “Thank you.” She set the pack down on the vanity and opened it taking out a PaDD looking device, the size of a legal pad of paper, but no screen. Then a micro PaDD that she tapped a button on, and a green light blinked on the larger one. She set the micro padd beside the bed and then lifted the mattress and slid the larger one several inches underneath, right below the pillow. “My alarm clock. The larger one vibrates to wake me up when the alarm goes off.” She looked around suddenly shy, “The controls worked on the lift. The guard made sure.”
Hannah
Jason made some last minute and wholly unnecessary adjustments to the bed, smoothing out non-existent wrinkles and such, before he said “Well… okay. If you need anything, just yell. I’m a light sleeper. So… um… sleep well.” and he smiled and set a hand on her shoulder as he moved towards the door.
Jason
Hannah reached up for his hand. “Jason…umm I can’t sleep with my implants on, so if you need to, it’s okay to come in. I wake pretty easy.” She hesitated before kissing his cheek. “Good night…I guess.”
He smiled and said “I won’t come in unless its an emergency… or you ask me to.” He leaned in slowly and kissed her cheek in return and said “Goodnight, Hannah. I’m glad you are here.” and then he was gone.
Hannah wasn’t tired until she actually sat down on the bed and suddenly it was a chore to get ready and climb under the blanket.
Hannah
Jason went up to the third floor and looked around the room. He then sighed heavily and began to get ready for bed.
Jason
Hannah was woken, sometime in the middle of the night, by a sour stomach. It hurt. She was disoriented at first. “Lights?” They flickered on and then the whole day came back. She didn’t have time to contemplate. She hurried across the hall to the bathroom.
She sat there for awhile but her stomach was empty. Which was part of the reason it hurt. She wet a cloth and wrung it out and set it on the back of her neck. Her hair was damp and her face flushed. She walked, hunched a bit back to her room where she rummaged in her bag for the hypo she brought. She leaned a hip against the vanity and depressed the button against her neck. She laid back down waiting for it to work.
Once it did, Hannah got up and quietly, or she thought, made her way down the stairs. She felt weird doing it, but he had gotten the ginger ale for her. So it was okay to get some, right? She popped a piece of candy in her mouth and then went looking for a glass and then the ginger ale.
Hannah
There was a soft touch on her shoulder. It was Jason. He had obviously been asleep. He was wearing a pair of shorts and his hair was unruly. He put his hands on her hips and smiled, gently moving her out of the way and reached and opened a cabinet door: a replicator. A very high end one, as well. He said something, but his face was turned away and in a shimmer of light… there was a glass of ginger ale. He handed it to her and then put his hands on the counter and hopped up and sat on it, facing her.
Are you ok? he signed. Is that what you wanted? I can get you something else.
Jason
To her credit, Hannah didn’t startle. She was surprised for a second before she recognized the scent of his soap before she turned around. However, Jason in just a pair of shorts was…her brain decided to stop working for a minute and just stare as he worked the replicator. She took the glass Thank you and drank slowly. Gratefully her stomach didn’t protest much and the cold temperature of the drink helped too.
Hannah set the glass down and looked up at him. Her hair was messed and half falling out of the high pony tail she had put it in. She was wearing soft pajama shirts, the kind that look long enough but aren’t quite and a tank top. She looked a little pale. I’m okay. I woke up sick and took a hypo. No, just the drink. Her head tipped to the side her eyes widened slightly and she flushed, embarrassed. Was I loud? I’m sorry.
Hannah
He smiled and reached out and took her hand. He lifted it slowly and set a lingering kiss on her palm and then he smiled at her. No. You were not loud. I’m a light sleeper, remember? His eyes looked directly at her and she could see there was something in them… a feeling, a warmth that flowed from them. It was the look of a man in-
Her palm tingled and buzzed and her heart raced. Everything seemed really still while his lips lingered. She actually stepped closer as he stared at her. She nodded drawn in by that look, I remember. If she had actually been speaking she would have sounded breathless, and somehow her hands seemed to convey that as she answered him.
Is the room okay? he signed as he slid off the counter to stand directly in front of her. For the barest of moments, the bare skin of his stomach and chest brushed against her as he slid down off the counter and then he moved to the replicator and got himself a glass of water.
Jason
Hannah felt light headed and warm at the same time. It had nothing to do with her stomach either. She waited for him to turn back around. The room is fine. Best bed I’ve slept on in awhile. I won’t want to go back to my quarters. She grinned, It will feel like a Klingon sleep shelf.
Hannah
Reilly looked at her over the rim of his glass as he drank. She was… yeah, she was. He drained the glass and put it in the recycler. He then turned and, finally, kissed her. A kiss of deep desire… want… and trust. He pulled back and looked her directly in the eye and mouthed the words “So don’t go back.” and he walked past her and out if the kitchen.
Jason
Hannah couldn’t move for several minutes. She stood there in the dark kitchen looking thoroughly kissed and happy and wondering if she was still dreaming. Finally, her heart stopped racing and the blush on her cheeks cooled. She took a deep breath and looked around. Was she supposed to follow him? Maybe, but she wasn’t quite ready to share a bedroom with him. Her subconscious laughed at her, ‘Then why are you sleeping in his house, Hannah?’ The answer was simple, she was being an idiot. She picked up her glass and carried it up the stairs. She stared up at the next floor and his room. In the end he had told her to stay but not asked her to come to his room. She padded quietly back to the room and closed the door. But sleep was a long time in returning.
Hannah
The next morning, Jason was gone when she woke up. But there was a handwritten note, on paper, taped to the mirror on the vanity.
‘Hannah,
I had to leave early for work. I am booked solid with meetings all day- the joys of the new job, I guess- but I will be waiting for your call after your shift telling me where to meet you if you still want to talk. I’m really happy that you stayed last night. But to be honest, knowing you were in the room just below me kept me awake more than I would like to admit. I hope you have a great day. There is real ginger ale in the chiller, and there is a carry-bottle on the counter if you want to take some with you. If there is anything you are craving, just add it to the grocery list in the computer. And if you need it now, have it delivered. I don’t mind. I can’t wait to see you again.
Love, Jason’
