Light filtered through the window as the first rays of dawn were brightening the sky. Eela rolled over, her body heavy and groggy from the sedation. She normally preferred to sleep on her stomach as it was often more comfortable, but that hadn’t been an option and she could feel the effects. Though perhaps it was more than that? Slipping out of bed carefully, Eela tried to rub the tiredness out of her face but she knew she needed time to wake up.After Kenzo had left she had turned off her comm. Maybe that had been a mistake but she had realized she could only handle things in dribs and drabs. Anything more was likely to send her into a panic attack. But today was a new day and she was facing a new reality. Pulling out her comm she checked the text messages, bracing herself as she remembered that she was supposed to have had her regular chat with Caridee yesterday. They were both exceedingly punctual people, which is why the string of messages yesterday might have been overwhelming had she actually checked them.
1510 hours: | Hey, are we still on for today? |
1530 hours: | I’m available if you are. |
1547 hours: | Is everything okay? You know I get worried if I don’t hear from you. |
1628 hours: | Spoke to Cort. He said something came up and to give you a couple days. I hope everything is okay and I’ll talk to you soon. I love you. |Gods she loved her daughter. Caridee had always been intuitive, knowing what was needed in a situation. Unlike her brother who had come into this universe in chaos and it had followed him (and their relationship) ever since. And though she had seen Jourin shift a little in recent years, her own chaos had only created more distance between them that saddened her.
There was an earlier message from Cort too.
1412 hours: | I hope you don’t see this till later. If you’re reading this and it’s the same day, put the damn comm away woman. Seriously! We have things here. Take the time you need and call me if you need anything at all. And I do mean anything. |Smiling to herself Eela dug out a thick shawl from her bag and ventured quietly upstairs, knowing it was still really early and not wanting to wake anyone. Just because she had slept twelve hours, didn’t mean everyone else had had a lot of rest. Moving to the backdoor, Eela slipped outside, feeling way stiffer and sore than she felt she ought to be. There wasn’t anything she could point to that would account for the discomfort but then again so much of yesterday was a blur punctuated by vivid details. She stood at the stairs, watching dawn wash over the land. What she wanted to do was go to the trees and so she braced her hand on the railing and took mindful steps in her barefeet, making her way to the large backyard.
Eventually her feet touched the grass and she audibly sighed, an exhale, a release. She stood there, her mind aware even as she closed her eyes and held her hands out at her sides, palms facing out, her fingers spread wide. It was as if she could take in the beautiful new energy of the day and transform it into something tangible that she could use.

“Now ya know your protection detail would have my hide for lettin’ ya stand out in the open like this, right?” came a familiar and friendly voice. Tenkiller stood behind her in a pair of sweatpants. His hair was wild, like he hadn’t brushed it yet, and he crossed his arms on his bare chest and grinned. “You drink coffee or tea?” he asked.
Tenkiller
Eela looked over her shoulder, brows arching against her brow ridges. “If you don’t have a tightly controlled perimeter around this place, I’ll eat my hair.”
She lifted her hands up to the sky, folding her fingers against her palm as she did so that when she did only her index fingers were pointed up. “The dust of stars fall to the ground”-she lowered her arms in an arc till her pointed fingers were directed at her feet-“and thus we give thanks and begin anew. During that last part you’re supposed to crouch and place your hands to the ground but if I do that right now I’ll have some medical folks rather irritated at me.” She was pretty certain she wouldn’t get back up without help. Which was fine but not the point. This was a ritual and she shared it with him because what little she knew about his people told her that rituals were as important to them as they were to hers.
Eela turned to him and smiled softly. “Always coffee to start.”

“Finish up. I’ll be in the kitchen. The ladies are still asleep… at least, I think they are.” he said with a grin. He turned and walked inside.
There wasn’t really anything to finish but she did resume her earlier stance and close her eyes, giving herself a brief moment to meditate.
Tenkiller set about making coffee. Ground beans, hot water, French Press coffee maker. What he made was strong, but he cut the bitterness by mixing raw sugar into the ground beans so it all steeped together. What resulted was a delicious beverage that could potentially be used as a defibrillator if one was hard up. He pulled down two large ceramic mugs. They seemed to be handcrafted by someone who was not very good at pottery… but they did hold a lot of coffee; and were surprisingly comfortable in one’s hand. He filled both and leaned against the island in the kitchen, waiting.

Eela made her way back up into the house with tentative steps- going up was always harder than going down when her back wasn’t great, even with the brace on (she shuddered to think what it would have been like without the device). But it was more than that as well. As soon as she was up there, she would have to resume dealing with everything that had happened yesterday. She knew she was capable of doing so but that didn’t make make her want to race up the stairs with excitement.
Stepping through into the kitchen, she spotted the mug and smiled as her hands slipped around it. “Oh good, a reasonable size. I had to have a chat with my replicators over the years about what was a suitable serving of coffee. It was like they didn’t believe me.”

Tenkiller smiled and said “Next time tell it to talk to my sister. She made that mug and this one for me.” and he grinned and took a sip. “So… how are you doing today? Did you get some rest?” and he chuckled. “I mean, I know you slept. But did it help?”
