Touch or no, Eela couldn’t hide from Sharah, not that she wanted or needed to. But she couldn’t look at any of them just yet. She squeezed Sharah’s hand, the first response she had given her friend. As much as she wanted to tuck away all that hurt and confusion, it would be pointless in this room, with these women. But that moment of pain when he grabbed her, their mutual shocked expressions, all was etched deeply in her mind. She’d been replaying that moment over and over, trying to make sense of it.

Sharah didn’t ask. She didn’t need to. Eela was thinking about it over and over, it was easy, clear even, to hear and feel all the details. Sharah seethe with anger for a man she had never ever met. But Sharah kept it firmly locked away and breathed out comfort. Eela did not need her anger. Jal’na pulled out her PaDD and tricorder. Sharah glanced at both and in quick order it was all scent, securely, to her console for a formal incident report. She mouthed a quiet thanks to Jal’na. The anger coming off the Klingon PT made Sharah feel better in a way over her own anger. Yavia, well she was a rather talented empath herself and didn’t need to know more. She slipped out of the room for a few minutes.

Seconds, minutes, it was hard to say how much time passed before Eela could even form words. She slowly shook her head as she lifted her head, silent tears slipping over her cheeks. “I… I just…” And just like that the words were gone again. Hands still in Sharah’s, she bent forward, resting her free arm on her thighs, her hand holding her head. “I don’t understand,” she whispered as shivers overtook her body.

Yavia had returned, with a hot herbal tea from Delta that she swore by. She poured for them all. Jal’na spotted a blanket and retrieved it and wrapped it around Eela’s shoulders.

Unlike her feelings the blanket was a soothing weight and Eela lifted her head a little, using her free hand to wrap it tightly around her.

“You can’t understand it. You aren’t like him and he is not like the man you knew so long ago. Do not try to understand him, Eela. He doesn’t deserve it, but more importantly, you do NOT and should not torture yourself with that. You did nothing wrong.” And she was engulfed in a very large 4 person group hug.

Charles came up from the bedroom area where he had readied a room for Eela. He was in shorts and a t-shirt that said ‘I’m Huge In Japan’, but he carried himself like the Major General he was. He looked at the guards and said “Perimeter watch. One CCDA, one Duroc on the driveway. Rest of you, fan out outside till dark, then we will bring the perimeter to the house. Move.” and after a second, everyone did. He looked in the den and said “Room’s ready.” and then walked away. This wasn’t the time for a man to try and fix things.

Yavia looked up as he came to the door and smiled her thanks. Sharah’s whole attention was on the Eela but she nodded that she heard him.

Maybe it was their instinct, or maybe they understood Eela enough to know that touch could ease a great deal for a Haliian, especially one like Eela that craved it. It was the final act that broke the down the wall she had hastily erected as they had escorted Cory from her home. It was true, somewhere in the last six years, Cory had become demonstrably different. But the things she hadn’t told anyone, the way they had fought, the way she been left so undone so many times and struggling to make sense of the life she found herself living. It hadn’t happened all at once, but the accident had shifted her and Cory’s life so dramatically that perhaps they had been bound to find this exact spot one way or another.

Understanding people and the reasons they did what they did was how she had begun her career. She had built a life examining what made people tick. It was hard to ignore it. But as they enveloped her in warmth and compassion and understanding Eela Dasca began to sob. It was borne of a deep grief for the cruel trick that had been played on her, for the relationship that she had hoped would stay amicable for their children’s sake. But Cory had destroyed that the moment he set foot on Oed for his own selfish purposes. She knew that, but it still hurt. But these wonderful women offered sanctuary and support, a safe space to not have herself together in anyway. And so she sobbed, and sobbed, her body shaking with all the feelings she had held back so often in the name of making it through, of putting the pieces of her life back together.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Yavia and Sharah sat beside her and Jal’na sat on the ottoman in front of her. Jal’na sang softly, the words didn’t matter, it was soft and and soothing. Yavia recognized it, not the words, but the melody. Jal’na sang it to the children in the NICU when she volunteered.

Sharah understood that Eela was trying to fall back on her training because it was familiar. She also refrained from commenting and invading that privacy. Eela needed to realize what she would tell a patient - she was too emotionally close to it. Just like a doctor would not operate on themselves or a bodyguard provide their own protection when a target. (Okay so they would try, but they shouldn’t). The women did not say anything, they simply let her cry, release the emotional turmoil. Like a wound sometimes needed to bleed to get the poison out.
