The CCDA had guards outside the door and they nodded at Eela as she came in. “Ma’am. Everything seems to be going well. Mr., uh… Ms. … um… Massat is in the kitchen.”

She gave them a small smile. “It’s perfectly acceptable to ask their preference when it comes to personal addresses.” Eela could have done so for them, but she thought it was good practice when living amongst diverse people to learn how to navigate these issues.

Normally Eela locked her workbag in her office out of an abundance of caution, especially when guests were about. Sensitive information was often at her fingertips and she took exceptionally cautious steps to avoid accidents with it all. Instead she put the bag in her bedroom (as good a place as any and on the opposite side of the apartment from the work) and proceeded down the lang hall to the kitchen.

Karilan was indeed in the kitchen. The apartment smelled of citrus and vinegar and herbs. Karilan was at the cook top with a large, deep pot-slash-skillet kind if thing… and they were cooking. They turned as Eela came in and smiled. “I do so hope you do not mind. Your assistant told me you were planning eating reheated soup for lunch. So I took a chance and thought maybe something a bit more substantial would serve. He said it would be fine.”

Eela laughed. “Yes, Cort would say that,” she said shaking her head. “I don’t mind at all.”

Moving over she peered at what he was working on. “What are you making and how can I help?”

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

“You can help by getting yourself something to drink. And then you can sit and I will serve Bolian ginger stir fry with julivian fruit and seared vegetables.” and they set a lid on the wok and said “It will be ready in about five minutes.”

She gazed at him for a moment and just relented, because what else should she do? She was honestly just touched by the gesture. “You really didn’t have to do that, but it’s very kind and I appreciate it, Karilan,” Eela said.

Moving to the fridge and grabbing a bottle of a bright pink juice. She poured half a glass worth and then mixed in some plain sparkling water. “Did you want to try some? It’s an odd mix of sparkling water, saava juice and I like to add some cold black tea to it for some bitterness. I know it sounds really odd but I find it strangely delightful and refreshing.”

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

“I gave traveled to many, many worlds Captain. That is far from odd.” they said with a laugh. “And yes please. I would love to try it.” they added. “When lunch is over, I would like to show you our progress, if you have the time.”

Massat

“Absolutely,” she said, grabbing another glass and mixing another of her concoction. The saava was a hard fruit to classify. It was not quite citrus and also rather sweet. But she thought it would go nicely with the stir fry. Topping both with the sparkling water, the fizz and jumping spray of the water made her smile. Such a simple thing really, but there was a child-like delight she had for those tiny sensory moments.

Taking both glasses to the round dining table that was a part of her more casual dining and sitting area, Eela took a moment to look out onto the balcony and she could see even the growth on certain plants from even the other day. She braced her elbow on the table and rested her chin on her hand, watching him cook, the sounds of work going on just on the other side of the kitchen. “You know, this is the most people I think I’ve had in here at once. It’s a bit strange,” she said with a chuckle. She was also resisting the urge to get up and help. Eela was well used to people doing things for her, but she had discovered since the accident her body preferred to be on the go, and certainly her work encouraged busyness. So it was just strange to sit and not be intentionally doing meditation or something else that encouraged to let it all go.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

“Well there will be less and less as we go on.” Karilan said. “I expect it to be just Fen and I by the end of tomorrow.” They rounded the corner and came in with two plates with a generous amount of food on each. He set a plat in front of her and sat opposite. “And I must say, the crew that is installing the floor is absolutely amazing. They use a microtransporter to remove-” and they caught themselves and smiled. “Apologies, the engineer in me going googley-eyed for some of their equipment. I hadn’t realized I had been out of that work-world for quite so long.” They lifted their glass and said “To new friends and very old books.”
