Kenzo nodded and said “That is a very good idea. And I have the feeling you are not wrong in your assessment of the time. You continue with edits. I will handle sustenance.” He began tapping on the desk interface and in a few minutes he said “That should hold us… I hope. And I believe I found us a ship as well. So we also need to select our respective representatives.”

Eela added in the brief description of the environmental disaster and tweaked a couple words for flow or better meaning, but the substantive changes Kenzo made worked really well and she didn’t have much more to add in that regard. She turned to him and rubbed the side of her index finger in the crevice between her lower lip and chin, considering options. “Starfleet-wise, obviously Captain McBride should go. It would be a first true outing for him as the new commanding officer. Someone from science and security. Maybe our new counsellor too. I mean, if it had been the Centurion going, I’d say the whole senior staff should go together because they need some sort of mission with which to bond with. But we do need to balance needs and wants here.”

“Security?” Kenzo asked with a furrowed brow. “Do you believe that necessary? If so… perhaps a joint Fleet Security / CCDA presence, then? Colonial sciences should be reoresented, as well. And we should ask if the Ambassodor would like to send a representative along. All, of course, dependent on the Vren allowing us to do so.”

Eela dropped her hand and rested her arm on the desk, eyeing Kenzo intently. “Would you really send a ship of our people into Vren space without some security present? If I was in command of that ship, I’d demand it,” she said arching her brows. As someone who had lead a crew into enemy territory, her experience told her it would be a mistake to not go prepared. But that didn’t mean they needed to present an aggressive front. “A joint group is appropriate, and if the Vren balk at their presence then it’s a sign this won’t work and they don’t understand the fear they produce here.”

“A presence, yes… but only on the ship. And for protection in an emergency.” Kenzo said calmly. “Keep in mind, Star Fleet may not be a military force on paper… but that does not mean that is not how they are perceived by the majority of people. I do believe a protection detail is a good idea. I just want us to be wary of an unintentional show of force.”

“And this is why we’re not sending the Centurion,” Eela said. The small ship was armed to the teeth and definitely not the impression they wanted to give.

“I can talk to Mathis about how she wants to handle her end of things, but I think it goes without saying that she’ll be staying here. Her attaché might go, or maybe there is someone else suitable. Colonial science is a given for sure, given all science divisions will nee to be working together.”

Kenzo thought for a moment and said “We could always just send a survey probe, as well. Launched from an independent ship from outside the system with the Vren’s permission. Live feed from it and broadcast the signal on the public feeds.”

She nodded slowly. “That would be the easy solution. But, and you would know this better than I, would the citizens of Oed accept a third party evaluation, even if it’s from someone trusted? If not, we still will want to have our own people present to verify the probe’s results.”

He thought for a moment and said “Honestly? I am not certain either way. But… it would be a good litmus test of how much trust we have built. Granted, testing that in this particular arena is a risk. But either way some will not believe either a probe or a delegations word. Perhaps if we ask the Vren which would be more acceptable to them?”

Tapping the side of her finger on her lower lip, Dasca blew out a breath. When there was no clear path she usually listened to her instincts. “We can’t make everyone happy and it would be pointless to try. Oed’s population on the whole trusts us, you and I, as much as they are able. The Vren are asking a lot, and we of course cannot go anywhere near their territory. We should speak with Ambassador Kek and explain the situation, but let’s keep it to the probe. It’s the best of both prudence and safety. But I recognize from the Vren perspective that firing anything into their territory might feel aggressive. But we cannot help that Kenzo. The Vren and the Federation put us in this awkward position and we’re just trying to make the best of what we were given. How the Vren react to the idea of us sending a probe into their territory will speak volumes about how much trust they have in us and whether this partnership is even possible. If they balk, we have our answer. If they agree, well, there is hope.”

“Agreed. If they decline the probe, then we shall decline their request. That seems fair… albeit tragic for them.” Kenzo said with genuine sadness for the possibility.

“What independent vessel did you have in mind?” she asked.

“The merchant vessel Vl’en’tral. It is a refurbished Vulcan science vessel. The owner has long been a friend of the colony, and she is active in local politics and charity work. She commands a great deal of respect and the people trust her. She and I have butted heads in the past on several occasions, a few quite publicly. But we have always maintained a level of mutual respect both publicly and privately. She represents the most ‘neutral’ and fair I think we can find on short notice.”
