She went to say something but no words came out. It was exactly the kind of adventure she would do, and needed. A sharp inhale and she blew out a breath. “I really want to say, ‘what the hell, let’s do it’, but, and I’m not trying to be self-deprecating here, is that such a good idea? You know the cliché about how a commanding officer walks into the lounge and all the riotous behaviour dies down, or the crew becomes self-conscious? It’s not always that way, but there is a measure of truth to it. I’m the Lieutenant Governor. I… don’t want to make anyone feel awkward.” The speakeasy had been a vastly different environment. Loud. Distracting. Anyone who didn’t want to talk with her hadn’t needed to. It was one ting for her and Sharah to be social together, but she didn’t want to intrude on their social group where she wasn’t welcome.

Sharah nodded, “Well then let’s make it small. You and I obviously, and I have to include Yavia. Jal’na is participating and Lt Mika. She’s a very good friend of mine. Arrived recently and agreed to participate. She is the new CNS. Or perhaps you have a different group in mind?”

“I didn’t have any group in mind, just that I didn’t want it to be awkward for anyone,” Eela said. She inhaled deeply and smiled. “You know me well enough and I trust you, Sharah. Coordinate a date and time wth Cort and let’s do it.” Inwardly she felt that tiny thrill of jumping outside the box she had placed herself in and just letting loose a little. The part of her that yearned to be free needed to let out now and again and she was on the path to finding that balance, starting with figuring out what to wear to present herself as a fantastic option for a date. Her smiled deepened into a grin. Some poor person likely had no idea what they were getting into and that thrilled her to no end.

“Well I doubt it will be awkward. Everyone knows you but Mika, and she’s newly arrived. She needs the chance to get to meet people.” Sharah nodded, “I’ll talk to him on my way out.” Sharah grinned at the excitement and mischievousness swirling around Eela. She hoped this was a really positive experience for her. Sharah often had the same thought, did people know what they were getting into with her, but the thought never brought laughter or excitment.

There was something bonding about doing something that tested you or had the potential for humiliation, and Eela knew that no matter how this went Sharah had her back and vice-versa. She was really going to do this, wasn’t she? Inhaling deeply and blowing out her breath, Eela smiled. “Anything other life changing tasks we should do while we’re here or should I get a start on all this work Cort has left for me?”

Sharah shrugged, “Not that I know of. I will talk to Cort, say for this Thursday. That will be 2 days before the event. Though it might help if you tell him. He may not adjust your schedule for me. And I really don’t think he will believe it’s required for your health.” Sharah laughed.

She planted her hands on the desk and leaned forward. “You’ve met him now. Do you really think he’d let me squirm out of it?” She snorted. “That man is the ultimate mother hen, which is frankly hilarious given the fact that I was the one that raised two children. He’s more savvy than he seems. I’m sure you two will have no issues,” she said, shaking her head.

“Of that I have no doubt. Well I better get going. I’ve disappeared from the hospital long enough. They will send a search oarty out rather than try my comm.” Sharah stood and grabbed her bag, lifting it to her shoulder.

Rising and moving around the desk, Eela gazed at Sharah intently, gratitude filling her hazel eyes. She leaned in and wrapped her arms around the younger woman and just held her gently. “Thank you,” she whispered. It was more than just the plant, or the exercise. It was the understanding and having someone hold space for her. This process she was embarking on to undo the false beliefs she had was more than just reframing thoughts. She would have to confront a lot of things that had had and see them how they truly were, not as she had wished them to be. It was bound to be painful, but Eela Dasca was made of stern stuff. And with friend like Sharah, she’d make it through.

Sharah hugged her back receiving and giving warmth. This was going to havevto go in that infernal journal now. She pulled back after a moment and shook her head. “It’s what friends do, Eela. Now let me let you get back to work before Cort doesn’t like me.”

Sharah headed out the office door and looked around, spotting the aid she walked right up to him, “Just the person I need to talk to.”
