Timing a meeting of this kind required delicate timing and planning. Not just because it was with the Governor, but because keeping something like this from Eela was not only very difficult, they didn’t want suspecting that something was amiss. Because nothing was. But the woman was honed into every detail around here that Cort Belanger was acutely aware that in order to keep the requested topic quiet, he was going to have to engage in subterfuge… as the Executive Assistant to an empathic and highly trained psychologist and seasoned leader.

What could possibly go wrong?

So, after Eela was out of the office with back-to-back meetings, Cort didn’t even bother sending a meeting request (too much of a trail) and simply went up the one floor and headed to see Dorma Fen while Elema handled Dasca’s office. They were all slowly getting to know one another given how much their bosses interacted at all hours of the day and it was a given that they would help each other out wherever they could unless it poses a risk to their boss. Which is why Cort would never dream of doing do. This was entirely fun and positive.

“Good morning Dorma. Does Hyrushi have ten minutes to spare for me?” He knew he was in the office this morning as Eela had had her daily meeting with him before leaving for her own business, but there was always the risk that he was too busy.

Dorma looked at him and cocked an eyebrow. “Really? Does Hyrushi have the time? As we have discussed, to you it is either Governor or The Governor.” and she smiled. “How will we ever train you properly?” and she pulled up the Gocernor’s schedule. “Today is a busy day…” she said and then looked at him, a conspiratorial grin on her face. “Perhaps if you care to tell what this is about…?”

Entirely unfazed by Fen’s chastising, Cort leaned in and dropped his voice. “A bid by Dasca’s daughter to make the poor woman actually take time off for the upcoming Haliian holiday and enjoy herself. But the whole thing requires careful execution and some input from the Governor because we both know how hard it is to actually surprise either of them with something positive,” Cort said, his grin matching hers. He was fine bringing Fen into the mix. “And if you have any tips, I’ll take them, because as much as I can read her and her own state, her abilities make it worse for me and I don’t want her thinking something bad is going on. These are wonderful surprises being planned.” The careful trust a support staffer built with the person they worked with was delicate and Belanger would never dream of doing anything that would damage that.

Fen thought for a moment and then tapped the comms. “Governor, Mr. Belanger to see you, sir. He says it is urgent.” There was a pause and then Hyrushi’s voice said “Send him in.”

Inside the office, Hyrushi looked up as Cort entered. His eyes locked on the man, and then a small nod. “So not urgent bad, then. Good.” he said as the doors swung closed. “We have enough fires to put out, I would think. Please have a seat, Mr. Belanger.”

“Thank you, Sir, and agreed. I’ll try to be as succinct as possible,” Cort said as he took a seat and crossed one ankle over the other knee. “It’s about Eela and the upcoming Batarael celebration. As you know, her daughter Caridee and her husband and infant daughter are planning to make the trip out here for the celebration. No small feat as they are based on Earth, so their plan is to stay a few weeks to make the long journey worthwhile.”

“And no small feat considering the events that are going on right now.” Hyrushi said flatly.

“Caridee has been in contact with me about a few things she wanted to do for her mother as surprises. Which as you know if rather hard to pull off with someone like her mother who rarely misses anything. Namely, there are some secret guests who are planning to arrive in time for the first of the six day celebration. The First Day involves a special dinner with friends and family with some accompanying rituals. Her son, Jourin, and his new partner are hoping to to make it but based how things look right now, they are going to be cutting it very close and Eela wouldn’t be able to greet them at the orbital platform as she plans to for Caridee. But… Eela and Jourin have had a complicated relationship, especially these last few years and Caridee feels that her mother would be heart-broken if she expected him to come and for some reason wasn’t able to make it in the end. Hence, the reason we’re keeping it secret. But the timing works out such that they would likely have to rush over to Eela’s apartment and show up for dinner. Which… presents all kinds of security issues we need to clear through the CCDA and her detail, and everyone of course will be going through the usual security checks. But what I was hoping you could do is perhaps see if we’re missing any key variables that we need to consider. Caridee wants to do something special for her mother but she understands that her role as Lieutenant Governor complicates things a little bit more than before.” It was a lot to spit out but Cort thought the overall gist was fairly straightforward.

Hyrushi thought for a moment and then said “How are her sone and his partner traveling? Commercial or private charter? And are they coming from Earth as well? And exactly when is this celebration due to take place?”

“Batarael, which lasts six days, begins in forty-three days. Jourin and Sibusiso are travelling using Jourin’s own runabout. Jourin is a pilot and instructor in the Sol System and usually based on the Moon, but he’s teaching a course right now and can’t get anyone to cover the last bit of it, so can’t leave any earlier than currently planned.”
