Sharah arrived early, she hated being late. She bypassed the coffee cart, the line was far too long this morning and made her way onto the complex. She headed toward the core building with all the offices and scanned her hand at the security desk and took the lift up to the 5th floor and a couple of turns later she approached the door for Conference Room A. The presences in the room made her pause a half step. McBride didn’t surprise her, but Eela as well? Oh dear, this wasn’t about that meeting with Oshiro and Helaky was it? She thought it had gone…well ended better than it went. Sharah took a deep breath, straightened her uniform and stepped through the door at exactly 0859. She stopped at attention just a few feet away. “Lt Gov Dasca, Cpt McBride, good morning. What can I do for you today?”
Fayth, SFCMO
Eela gestured to table. “Have a seat, Lieutenant,” she said simply.
Sharah moved over to a seat that allowed her to face both Dasca and McBride. Fayth had spent a lot of time with Eela but not so much she didn’t know if using her rank rather than ‘Doctor’ was good or bad for her. And both people were blank presences for her.
With ever the patience of both a seasoned captain and a psychologist who could out-wait her patients, Dasca simply breathed deeply as she collected her thoughts. “You know, one of the things that Captain McBride and I have been doing is assessing every area of Starfleet operations on the colony and environs. We’ve been taking in all the reports and audits and making some critical decisions. But we still have some particular areas of concern.” Her emotions were tamped down, so Sharah wouldn’t be able to glean more than focus and concern from Eela.
“You have a difficult job here, Doctor Fayth, but I’m curious what your own assessment of your efforts would be.”
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov
Fayth nodded, she was aware of the evaluations going on across the departments. Everyone was, and it was causing no small amount of swinging emotions for everyone, from stress and worry all the way to relief and hope, with everything in between. She took a moment to consider the question, objectively and not with her own swirling emotions about it all. “If I had to make a single statement of assessment…On the surface it appears that the medical staff has made very small strides forward and our goals seems lofty, but the improvements we’ve made to the cooperation between the Fleet medical staff and colonial staff are making small but important improvements to the quality of life for the colony.” She paused a moment, “That isn’t to say there aren’t still problems.”
Fayth, SFCMO
McBride leaned back, studying the doctor for a moment before looking to Dasca. “More or less as we thought.” His entire demeanour was neutral and a part of him regretted that, but he also knew that it was for the best.
Captain McBride, Starfleet CO
Eela nodded. “Indeed,” she said seriously, flicking her attention back to Fayth. “That would be a loose overview of the entire team’s efforts, yes. But what about yours. What can you say about your own contributions towards those gains?”
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov
Ah so this was to be a performance review of sorts. Time to talk herself up - honestly and fairly. Something Sharah was not good at. “Well I’m in a unique position aren’t I? The hospital lost it’s chief of staff and had no leadership when I arrived, and our Star Fleet medical services weren’t much better. Each individual department within those two organizations were operating as if they were stand alone, with no collaboration or cooperation. My biggest contribution is the assignment of staff. Forgetting who pays their salary, so to speak, I have completely re-assigned positions, schedules, teams to match staff that have complimentary skills to form the best units within each. Now anyone who comes into the hospital is assigned the best practitioner for their needs not based on where they live or who their boss is. There are no longer staffing shortages because we always had enough, they just weren’t assigned appropriately.” Of course there was an even bigger headache, but Sharah felt it had made a huge difference, “And of course the implementation of stricter supply protocols. Before the hospital was practically leaking medications and material and equipment. Now everything is accounted for and we’re able to keep supplies maintained and serve our patients.”
Fayth, SFCMO
Dasca smiled. “I’m so glad we’re in agreement. I was worried you were going to undersell your efforts. So, that makes this even easier,” she said as she pushed her chair back and herself to her feet, a motion far more smooth than it had been in recent days. “We have a major issue to correct and we’re going to take care of that right now. So… Attention, Lieutenant Fayth,” Eela ordered, sounding every bit the captain she was and had been.
Sharah stood at a crisp attention, because she was ordered to. She was utterly confused, but given Dasca’s statement she wasn’t too worried, but bewildered was a good description for how she was feeling.
McBride rose to his feet also and handed Dasca a box, which she took without having to even look for it.
Oh she knew what that box was. Everyone knew what those boxes were. She shook her head slightly, no....this was not going to happen. She’d just been promoted before she arrived on Oed. No....they weren’t giving her some kind of citation for doing her job.
“Lieutenant Sharah Fayth, it has not escaped our attention that you have gone above and beyond not only the requirements of your position and rank, but you’ve also brought pride and harmony to the medical services on this colony. You have demonstrated great leadership and understanding of the needs of the people around you and you and your team have been the example of cooperation and future outlook the rest of the colony looks to emulate.” Opening the box, Eela beamed at Sharah. “For you undeniable effort, we hereby promote you to the rank of Lieutenant Commander,” she said as she pinned the new hollow pip next to her two solid ones and offered her her hand. “Congratulations, Commander.
Fayth was....speechless for a long moment as Dasca pinned the new pip on her collar. The feel of Eela’s pride in her was moving and meant a great deal. Over their, relatively, short acquaintance, Dasca’s opinion had come to mean quite a great deal for her. She grinned as she shook her hand. “I thought you liked me. Now I have to teach.”
When given the opportunity, Jonathan stepped forward. “Very well deserved, Doctor Fayth,” he said, also offering his hand.
~Dasca & McBride
Fayth took his hand and shook it firmly. “Thank you, Cpt.” To say she was surprised was an understatement. She had least had the good grace to not say she didn’t deserve it. Though Sharah was convinced she hadn’t done anything special. She’d done the job that needed to be doing.
