He smiled. “Lots. I can see why you wanted to bring us here. It’s a a treasure trove of goodies and the atmosphere is wonderful.” He eyed her a moment. “I figured you for a tangible book in hand type.”

“Did you now?” Dasca said with an amused smile before moving off towards the science section. Come, I’ll show you something.”

Meanwhile, Mathis was checking out a section of memoirs and biographies, her blond head tilted as she skimmed titles. Some of the people she actually knew personally and some she had never heard of. She looked over her shoulder at Massat. “I love reading about the lives of people who’ve done unusual things. Any recommendations?”

Karilan moved to the Ambassador’s side and said “Unusual things? That is a broad spectrum of possibilities. That being said…” and he moved past her and pulled out a blue and red-covered book. “’Talk To Me: How I Moved From Miner To Mediator’. It is the autobiography of one Fren Haliks, an Andorian dilitheum miner who started off as a basic laborer; but became the head of the largest mining labor union in the Federation. Quite the story, I assure you.”

Massat, Owner

Mathis took the book from them and smiled. “Indeed, that is exactly the kind of unusual I like. Stories with twists, people subverting expectations, things like that. Sometimes it ends up being research or education for me, but most of the time I’m just simply fascinated by people,” she said as she began to flip through the book, skimming passages. “I think I’ll take a chance on this one, thank you,” she said with deep sincerity, letting her gaze meet Massat’s.

Eela led Jones over to the science section and skimmed the area she had last seen the volume, doubting anyone would have purchased it since she was last here. It wasn’t a rare copy and was used as a textbook in some anthropology courses, so it was easy enough to find.

Sure enough, her index finger landed on a black spine with gold foil lettering titled: Explorations in The Unrecognizable- How Bones Tell Us about Life and Spirit by Dr. Sayra Jerik. She handed it to Jones, her fingers lingering over the cover as he took it from her.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Jones frowned as he gazed at the name. “I know this name, or rather it seems familiar.” He could feel Eela’s penetrating gaze and looked up, catching the mirth in her lovely eyes. “Now I feel like there’s a timer on me set to expire long before I figure it out.”

Eela laughed. “Oh come on, I’m sure you know this. But I can give you a hint. The surname is the woman’s maiden name.”
Dash studied the tome again and then his eyes lit up. “Ahh, yes. Dr. Sayra Dasca, your mother, yes?”
She nodded, pleased he figure it out.
“Was that weird, growing up with a forensic anthropologist as a mother? I sort of imagine it being creepy that her work was all about bones and dead bodies.”
She laughed again. “I don’t know that creepy is the right word. Unusual, perhaps.”

“You’re speaking my language,” Jeanette said as Dasca’s laughter drew her attention and presence. “Then again, wasn’t your father a heablist too? That makes for a rather varied, if balance childhood, I would think.”

Eela grinned. “It was very interesting, that much I can tell you. Did you also know my maternal grandfather was the mayor of his village for fifty years?”

“Ahh, so politics is nothing new to you then,” Mathis said, nodding with understanding, as if seeing Dasca through a new lens.

Dash shook his head. “You’re all sorts of fascinating, Lieutenant Governor.”

A lilting laugh from Eela was followed by her stepping away. “You don’t know the half of it,” she said as she moved towards Karilan. “Anything worth pointing out upstairs? I figure we should show them rather unapologetically the treasures you keep.” Something about all the banter had put Eela in a rather fun and lighthearted mood, and she leaned towards Karilan. “Just so you know, this is currently my favourite place on the colony.”
