Dasca beamed. “Ask me again in a couple hours and I might have a different answer but right now I’m very well.” She gestured to the other chair at her round table. “How are you today?” Sure, she could simply get into asking what Fayth needed of her but she enjoyed the woman’s company, no matter what instigated her presence.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Sharah pulled the chair out and sat. Before she could answer a server came by to take her drink order. Sharah ordered sparkling utta berry juice and then turned back to Eela, “Well, so far it has been an easy day. Mostly routine exams and follow ups today. But ask me tomorrow after I do my weekly shift in the ER.” What Sharah wanted to talk about wasn’t really pressing, and if they never got around to it that was fine. She liked spending time with Eela and talking g with her. Sharah considered her a friend but also someone wiser and more experienced that she felt comfortable talking to.

She nodded with understanding before taking a sip of her green drink. “I was an XO during the war, and in the aftermath I was burnt out so I requested a change of assignment. Pulling myself out of a command job was… an unusual career choice but I just needed a break. So I asked for something different. Because of my counselling background they placed me on the post-war trauma teams. Gods that was intense. But a different kind of intensity than being on a bridge in war. It was a distraction, but a good one, and after six months I did a stint as an instructor at the Academy Annex on Psi Upsilon Three.” She leaned in. “I needed that year before they eventually offered me my own ship but I’ll tell you Sharah, there is something about health crisis management that is just different from other things we do. I miss that way it pulls your senses into sharp focus. There’s nothing else going on but the patient before you. It’s intense and exhausting, dealing with those sorts of emergencies, but it certainly makes you feel alive.”

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Sharah nodded, “It is, but I can’t imagine doing anything else, even on the worst days.” That intense focus, was even a kind of healing for herself. Making the noise and pain of her own talents worth it to save a life, to heal the sick. “Of course I haven’t served during war time, but I would hope I would feel the same. I was born during the Dominion Occuoation of Betazed.” Sharah couldn’t even begin to fathom how she would handle all that pain and suffering, and choosing who lived and who died. She shook her head of the dark thoughts. “Of course I can’t imagine being in command during all that. I have never had that desire. Different challenges, and all equally traumatic for the one in the position.” The server returned with her drink and Sharah ordered a sandwich.

“It involves a different perspective for sure,” Eela said before piercing a mushroom and popping it into her mouth.

“It’s good you were able to see you needed that time though. When the Viking was decommissioned we were at Starbase for months for the debrief. Then we had 3 months leave.” Sharah sighs, it was supposed to be a good thing, happy, start over…together…a fresh start after everything that happened. “Sometimes I don’t think it was long enough. Then others I know it was but new events…” She picked up her drink and sipped. “Oed is so different from any assignment I ever imagined. But I like it.”

“Even in the short time I’ve known you I can see you growing, Sharah. This place presents challenges that are definitely unique and sometimes it can be hard to see in the moment just how much they benefit us, but I like to think whatever adversity we’re experiencing is exactly what we needed at this time in our lives, so”-she lifted her glass-“to rising to the challenges that Oed hands us.”

Sharah raised her glass, “To challenges.” Sharah enjoyed being challenged, but not frustrated with them. That’s where she felt right now with the biggest challenge in her life. She was just going to have to deal with that though. She wasn’t sure she had grown a whole lot, but she would admit that she was learning a lot about leadership and people and how to coordinate services. On a personal level…maybe she had, it was hard to examine it. Wouldn’t Korczak love that? It made her grin a little as she sipped at her drink.

Taking a sip, she let the strange combination of flavours of her drink mingle in her mouth before swallowing. “So you said you had something to talk to me about?”

“So…apparently Sacred Heart runs a charity event every year. This year they are trying to raise funds, equipment, services to help with all the refugees arriving to the colony. Well…as the acting Chief of Staff, I’m expected to participate. I didn’t really have a problem with that…until the head nurse, one Ms Alice Shrine, came to ensure my participation and informed me it’s a…” Sharah shook her head. How did she get into these situations. “It’s a bachelorette auction. And as a member of the Sacred Heart staff, despite being very awkward, I don’t mind participating, but as the SFCMO....and I just couldn’t bring myself to ask McBride about this.”
