Dasca beamed. “Ask me again in a couple hours and I might have a different answer but right now I’m very well.” She gestured to the other chair at her round table. “How are you today?” Sure, she could simply get into asking what Fayth needed of her but she enjoyed the woman’s company, no matter what instigated her presence.

Sharah pulled the chair out and sat. Before she could answer a server came by to take her drink order. Sharah ordered sparkling utta berry juice and then turned back to Eela, “Well, so far it has been an easy day. Mostly routine exams and follow ups today. But ask me tomorrow after I do my weekly shift in the ER.” What Sharah wanted to talk about wasn’t really pressing, and if they never got around to it that was fine. She liked spending time with Eela and talking g with her. Sharah considered her a friend but also someone wiser and more experienced that she felt comfortable talking to.

She nodded with understanding before taking a sip of her green drink. “I was an XO during the war, and in the aftermath I was burnt out so I requested a change of assignment. Pulling myself out of a command job was… an unusual career choice but I just needed a break. So I asked for something different. Because of my counselling background they placed me on the post-war trauma teams. Gods that was intense. But a different kind of intensity than being on a bridge in war. It was a distraction, but a good one, and after six months I did a stint as an instructor at the Academy Annex on Psi Upsilon Three.” She leaned in. “I needed that year before they eventually offered me my own ship but I’ll tell you Sharah, there is something about health crisis management that is just different from other things we do. I miss that way it pulls your senses into sharp focus. There’s nothing else going on but the patient before you. It’s intense and exhausting, dealing with those sorts of emergencies, but it certainly makes you feel alive.”
